Title: Small Frame Turkey Diaphragm Calls
Post by: pickardjw on February 21, 2020, 07:20:35 AM
I'm a guy with a smaller palate and often have a tough time with getting a good seal on diaphragm calls. I've tried a few different manufacturers and shapes with Strut being the best so far, but I still have trouble with them. Are there any manufacturers out there that make smaller frame diaphragm calls with people with small mouths?

Primos makes a mini sonic dome that I use.

I've used the primos mini sonic before and they seal well to my small mouth. They don't seem nearly as versatile as a traditional style. Woodhaven makes small frames but I've had a bad run with the diaphragm rubber tearing after one or two uses. They worked great before tearing. I just picked up a ghost cut Primos Hacked Off call. You can trim it to size and it comes with trim lines on it. Works great in my small mouth. I'd recommend trying the hacked off first.

Was going to suggest the Woodhaven custom calls but only because I’ve had pretty good luck with their other calls in the past.

I’ve never used the small frame ones before.

You might try trimming it down in size.

FYI - I like the HS Strut diaphragms the best too.

Tom Teaser has small frame calls to.  Wife uses them.  I would just trim a call down with a pair of scissors.  Make sure to take a little off at a time.

I'm confused, when you are talking about trimming, are you trimming the tape or the actual frame?  I don't have this issue with calls but my youngest son does, so I am curious to know more here and make sure I understand.

I've attached a picture of the Primos Hacked Off diaphragm call. You can see where the lines are printed on the tape. You can trim any diaphragm call to fit your mouth. I need a medium or small frame to even fit my upper pallet, so keep in mind if the frame won't fit there's no point in trimming.
