30-06 wasn't on the list, so I went with 338. :chuckle:

When I got into shooting long range, I went with the 300 win mag.  I chose to go witha 26" barrel and a twist rate that would stabilize 200 grain bullets.  I couldn't be happier with my decision.   I personally defined long range as 400-800 yards as most of my chamberings were good to 400 prior to my semi custom build.  There are a ton of calibers capable of long range shooting now days....you just have to decide what your ultimate objective is....punching paper or killing big game.  I have found that by practicing to 700+ the 300-400 yard shots have become very easy compared to the past.  I may also add....once you learn to shoot 400 and further, all your kill shots will be withing bow range.  LOLOLOL

My next gun will likely be the 28 nosler for similar shooting / hunting distances.

Good luck on your decision and happy shooting.

Do you reload?  That would affect what I'd choose.   All in the poll can do 500 yds with no problem.

all are good shooters, Weatherby may or may not shoot consistent..i have a crown that drives tacks but my mkV is so-so. the 28 nos is a barrel burner but a hot gun... 300 yds is not all "that far" or "long range" but energy of impact down range will set limits for hunting applications (IMO). Not interested in ethics discussion but at 1K your choices in list start to shift.

again the answer for me is "yes" to the list, what ever suits you best

I chose the 28 nosler only because that's the chambering in my newly ordered rifle and I am a 7mm fan. For years I've done most of my hunting with a rem 700 in 7mmSAUM but have also used a 300Ultra, 338 win mag and 270win. all will do what your asking but I think the 270 is on the light side for elk.
I wanted gun/caliber combination that could kill game(up to elk size) confidently up to 600 yards and hope a heavy 7mm Berger will be just the ticket.

Depends on definition of long range.  Up to 300 yards there isn't a significant difference in the listed calibers...dead is dead.  I'd argue the difference between 300-400yards still isn't a large difference either.   Once you get to 400, then 600, then 800+ yards that is when calibers/cartridges start separating themselves.

Your poll mentions elk. If we're talking 600+ yards at an elk, I'd suggest a 300mag/338mag class of cartridges.  If you think you'll be shooting at game <500 yards 99% of the time then one of the 7mm magnum cartridge options is sufficient.  But that's my personal preference based on how much energy and bullet weight I like to have on impact with an elk.   Not saying I'm right, just personal preference.

300 yards does not push the limit in any of those calibers.

Factory or Custom ?   If factory look at the 300 PRC ?

Long range elk I would drop the 30-06 and .300 Weatherby ( capable but freebore / bottleneck cases why bother ).  If going 7mm may as well go 28 Nosler.   If going .300 win why not 300 wsm ?   338 wm is capable and my short range gun of choice (400 and under)

Lots of 300 wins for sale. Lots of guys buy them but can’t tolerate the punishment at the range for long.

I voted 300wm.  Lots of match ammo available and great hunting ammo.  338wm is not a great choice for long range imo though it can be done.  My definition of long range is where wind starts to matter with miss or hit.

When it comes to long range it's all about the wind. Nothing on that list will out windage the 28 Nosler. The heavy .284 bullets like the 195gr berger are unmatched.

This thread will probbably go on and on - good stuff. 300RUM should probably be on the list for long range but the votes so far do not surprise me, 7Mag and 300 WIN are two of the best ever.
Title: Re: Best long range caliber for all hunting (over 300 yds)

Personally I think the 30s are great on elk but overkill on deer. So if you’re talking sheer knock down power the big 30s are tough to beat, but if your looking for a well rounded cartridge then 7mm. You can shoot 140-150 fast and flat and step up to 180s for the bigger game..also with less recoil which makes you more accurate 90% of the time. I personally hunt deer with a 6.5 and if I was going to go after elk with a rifle I wouldn’t hesitate to use it, after all placement is everything.  I have a 300 wm but don’t shoot it anymore as it’s just no fun. So I’m planning on ripping it apart for a custom 7 saum
Title: Re: Best long range caliber for all hunting (over 300 yds)
Post by: hogslayer on March 09, 2020, 08:17:50 PM
7 SAUM is a very good round.  If you don't reload, you don't have very many options.  Seems like my top choice LR hunting riles don't have many or any factory loads.  Are you going to reload?  That would have a big factor in what round i would pick.  Recoil is a big deal to me for hunting.  A good break and ability to stay on target is always important.

All of the comparable rounds (PRC, Nosler, WSM, Dakota etc.) would do just as well. Nothing against the 300 Weatherby, the Win Mag just gives you more options for guns, brass, load data and factory ammo.

That’s impressive at 856 that 300 wm 180’s could perform that well.  Energy  must of been around 1200 ft lbs?

They didn’t expand worth a damn. I shot a deer a couple of weekends before that and it was like a pin hole in and out. I switched to Accubonds after Elk. It hindsight it worked out great on the Elk, He tipped over in five yards. But I’ve been happy with Accubonds.

My hunting buddy didn’t believe me either. Then the next morning we hiked up to my Elk where I left him. It’s the only animal I’ve shot past 650yds. It worked out but I shouldn’t have taken the shot.

Interesting as the ballistic Silvertip is more frangible than the accubond. Penetration and stopping just under tbe hide, and only going 5 yards sounds like pretty good bullet performance👍

Well a quick run through the Berger ballistic calc has you about 200 FPS below Nosler’s minimum recommend velocity (which are usually a little on the high side anyways) for that bullet at that range so not sure how much expansion you were expecting..

I'd go with the .300 Win Mag as well. The 300 PRC has a bit of a leg up on the 300 Win Mag in that it's better suited for really long, high BC bullets. However, the .300 Win Mag is perfect for the vast majority of hunters and you can't beat it as far as ammo and rifle availability go.

Seems like every range has some guy with a braked 300 and barely holding on. I also never see those guys shoot from a standing position.

There has definitely been a trend towards mid size calibers and I think ammo improvements have a lot to do with it. They are also just a lot more fun to shoot. I can crack off repeated rounds standing with my 7-08 while the 300 win mag guy is mentally preparing for the next shot.

The best long range rifle is the one you shoot all the time and are comfortable with.  7mag has just the right amount of energy vs. recoil (for me) that I can get performance but shoot it a lot.   :twocents:

Shot elk with 300 win, 338 win always have had broadside shots, just been lucky I guess. All walked or ran off not far but far from a bang flop. But with this utter nonsense of spike bull only in the areas I hunt I switched to a 338 rum. 2 bulls 608 & 676  yards bang flop. 2 cows 550 and 888 yards neither took another step. 225 grain Accubond at 3074 FPS avg. only 1 bullet has been recovered and that the cow at 888. 225 grain bullet retained weight was 189 grain. Shot was quartering toward slightly took at top of shoulder , traveled down blackstrap and stopped just before the hindquarters. Shoot what you want accuracy is final and practice practice practice. Just my two cents. The rum is definitely not deer friendly  :chuckle:

I love my Browning X-Bolt Stalker Long Range in 30-06 out to 450 yards. If I had to pick one "best" long range cartridge on this list it would be the 7mm no doubt. I won't shoot past 450 yards so for me my aught 6 is the ticket.
