Title: Will be in Cabo may 15 for a week, any advice on the fishing, who, whats running
Post by: RightPlace-RightTime on April 09, 2009, 07:29:07 AM: I'll be in Mexico May 15 for a week with JJdavis and the wifes. We want to head out on a charter for the day, just the two of us. Any advice on whats running and who is good to go out with, etc

Post by: jackelope on April 09, 2009, 08:23:00 AM: if you look at most of the fishing charters websites they will tell you what fishing is best when. i think thats about the time we went a few years ago and we got into dorado, some roosterfish and some bonito. we had a striped marlin on but he didn't last long.
this was all out of pangas not too far off shore, and the roosters are in shore.

He has the largest fleet and will tell you that they go out every day. Call him and he will get back to you and tell you what is running at the time. Nice guy, "loaned us an SUV at half the rate of the airport rentals and picked us up and dropped us off at the airport. I would recommend him highly. Most of the other charters only have one or two boats and if there is a breakdown, you don't go out when you plan to.

BILLFISH: This week was the poorest week in a long time for marlin, but then again its March and to be expected. After a pretty good week, last report, the wind kicked in with full force making it impossible, most days to get up to Golden Gate, where we have been fishing since October. When marlin were found it was hard to interest them in anything, they would simply come up nudge the bait and disappear. Only a smattering of hungry fish could be found, in fact eight total for our fleet. Added to this, charter business was way down; the slowest we have seen in many years for this period, so not many boats were going out, meaning less fish were caught. Overall twenty two percent of charters caught marlin though never more than one in a day and weights were from 130 to 185 lbs.

OTHER SPECIES: Despite marlin fishing being so slow there were quite a few other fish, mostly inshore, picking up the slack. Some dorado were caught by boats looks for marlin, seldom more than a single fish, though “C Rod” was fortunate to land a half dozen for Jeff and Dannielle Blice from Ellicott City, Maryland as well as being one of the only boats to release a marlin. They fished 5 miles out from the 11.50 spot, catching the marlin with a live mackerel and the dorado on yellow and green lures. Twenty five percent of charters caught dorado. Yellowtail was actually the number one fish in Cabo this week, with our anglers totaling 84 ranging from 12 to 45 lbs. These are actually a fun fish on light tackle and some of the best eating fish around. Catches ranged from a single fish, to twenty plus if you hit it right. Sierra also gave a good showing with 74 caught totals with catches of one to fifteen fish. We also had some huge squid up to 45 lbs, that got anglers excited thinking they had a marlin, as they hit lures, fast and furious. There were also some cabrilla, skipjacks, bonitas, plus a hammerhead and mako shark released. We also had one boat, Bill Collector that boated ten yellowfin tuna the only catch of the week for these species, for Dan Monks.

WEATHER: Extremely windy and rough on the Pacific fair to calm on the Cortez.
LOCATION: Off of Old Lighthouse, Los Arcos, 35 miles south of Cabo, Cerro Blanco, Pedregal, San Jose.
AVERAGE WATER TEMP: 69 F
BEST LURES: Live bait, feathers, iron, green/yellow lures.

if so make sure the boats you go out on are familiar with it...we had a bad experience the first time down there. we wanted to flyfish and the guide we had had no idea what to do to get us on fish. we ended up kind of figuring it out for ourselves. not cool.

Post by: 300wsm on April 10, 2009, 02:36:48 PM: I've used Picses 3 or 4 times and have been very pleased with them. Once I used someone else who was cheaper and regretted it. I think there is always something to catch in Cabo.

Post by: ThePascoKid on April 10, 2009, 03:15:00 PM: I was down there in mid March and went out with Gaviotas(sp) Charters had a great time, we caught 3 white tuna, 1 dorado, had a striped marlin on for about 10 min and lost him and caught a pelican, that was interesting, I would definitely recommend these guys, I went with Redrum 2 years ago and had a terrible time. Freddy was the captain, and Luis was the deckhand , both spoke good English and new their chit.

Post by: Intruder on April 13, 2009, 07:53:18 AM: I've fished down there on a few different occassions over the last 20 years. If memory serves me, you're kinda in between seasons. There should be some yellowtail around and mackeral and roosters. The better dorado will be a later but there should be some to be had by then. May be some tuna and stripers around.

Post by: Blacktail135 on April 18, 2009, 09:23:50 PM: Fished there 3 year's ago. Fun fishing trip. Used Pisces. Caught 1 yellowtail,1 trevally and 15 Sierra. We broke down on the way back. Water pump went out. 70hp Johnson. While me and skip were tinkering with the motor I noticed we were being blown into the rock's. I asked him for an anchor and he pulled out a blue and yellow "toy" paddle and wanted me to keep the 22-24' panga off the rock's. I laughed at him. He spoke English but with his accent and my hearing and some sign language, we managed to get an anchor set. Told the wife before I left that if I'm late getting back to not worry that's fishing, beside's I float better in 80 deg. saltwater. Later on (3 hr's. after my initial planned arrival back to the dock), while being towed in by another panga, my wife saw a boat being towed in and said to herself "That's gotta be him. Out of dozen's,maybe hundred's of boat's out there, that's gotta be him". She pulled out the Leupold Katmai's and confirmed it. Fun trip. Fun guide. Gave him a big tip and half the filet's. Tried to bring a block of frozen filet's (wrapped in a beach towel) on the return flight home as carry-on but the girl's at the gate wouldn't let me. Had to check them in. Bet they don't see that often. They made it back to Seattle okay, still frozen bullprickhard. Thawed Sierra is STRONGER tasting than fresh. Won't bring that back again.
