Title: Mast and deer
Post by: Jingles on April 19, 2020, 01:47:05 PM
Ok so from what I can find and understand deer like mast (acorns and other nuts, Chestnuts are sweeter and of course much larger than acorns and also from what I understand once deer find them they act as a deer magnet)
What I have is a conundrum  as last fall I put 50 Chestnuts in Peat moss and kept them in the refrigerator all winter, to see if I could get a few to start sprouting and maybe end up with a couple chestnuts trees. Well took them out and of the 50 nuts 38 of them have started to sprout. At present I have taken all the ones that sprouted and put them in 12 inch pots My problems now is what the heck am I going to do with probably 24 of them. Going to put a couple in the yard and several at my gold claim and where I go hunting  So here is the thing if a member has property that they would like to put a chestnut tree or 2 on their property to act as a natural food source. Please drop me a PM and once the tress poke their heads through the top of the peat moss in the pots we can make arrangements for you to get a couple.

@axle here knows a thing or two about chestnuts.

I have 4 or 5 varieties at my house, hoping theyll start producing next year.  Should be soon anyway.  Lost a half dozen when a bear ripped down the fences and the deer ate them.  :'(

Ok can't exactly call them trees yet but have a 15 chestnut tree starts that have poked their heads through the top of the peat moss in the pots that should [probably find a home before it gets to hot here in the Methow first round with another 19 that should be showing before to much longer. So if you are interested in one and willing to come pick a couple up safely drop me a PM.  No price put on them but hope for donations to cover cost
