Title: Gun builders.....educate me!!
Post by: jrebel on April 24, 2020, 01:53:39 PM
I have a Savage model 12 22-250 with a 26" heavy barrel.

For whatever reason it won't sell....so I am thinking I will build off the action.  What would you build if you had this action and can you use the heavy barrel and have it reamed to another caliber...or would it be cheaper to just buy a new barrel.

I am trying to get rid of some of my chamberings to simplify my reloading supplies / stock.  A couple calibers I was thinking of are 6.5 creedmoor, 7-08?

Share your thoughts and what direction / steps you would take to make this happen.  I know a couple really good smiths so don't really need reccomendations on shops....more on the process and caliber suggestions.

thanks

Know nothing about prefits but being a savage can you just order a 6.5 creedmoor prefit barrel and screw it on?    Maybe unscrew existing barrel and test if action will handle a creedmoor case.

Call James at nss.  For savage he has criterion and Shilen prefits.  Ask him what he’s got on the shelf and be shooting it in a week.  All of my prefits have been either criterion or McGowen and all have been sub 1/2 moa.

I have found all my savage barrels on other classified sections or ebay
Depending on what you want I just picked up an unfired Krieger feather weight chambered in 6.5 creedmoor to replace the factory barrel on my savage lightweight hunter. 350 bucks shipped on accurate shooter. You can rent headspace guages online. I have all the tools to do barrel swap and have done 3. If you wanted to make the trip over the hill would let you use the tools and assist. I have 6.5 creed go/nogo  guages. Tons of online prefits also available even carbon barrel depending on your budget

I'd list it on gunbroker. Part of the problem is that most of us on the west side prefer shorter barrels and lighter guns for coyote hunting.

That gun would be more appealing to coyote hunters in a state like Utah or Nevada where you have a lot of long range shots.
