I am looking to purchase a digital slr. I found a deal on a Nikon D60 with two lenses or a Canon Rebel xsi with one lens for about the same price. Is there a particular route I should take. I have no aspirations of being a professional photographer, I just wish to take nice photos of my family and the animals that I like to hunt. Thanks for any advise.

What are the lenses with each setup?

The Nikon package has has two lenses: (1) 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6, (2) 55-200mm f/4-5.6.
The Canon has only one and it is the same as the smaller Nikon lens. The Canon is 12 megapixels and the Nikon is 10 megapixels. The price for the Nikon is $50 more. $550-Canon, $600-Nikon

For $600.00 I would pass on both and pick up a Canon 40D :twocents:

jmx, none are great deals. You can find that Canon xsi for about 300-400 online and I have seen the lens it comes with for as low as $15. I can't comment much on the Nikon deal but it seems a tad overpriced. If you are going to spend $600, get a Canon 40D with a $50 50mm f1.8 lens... Or you can get the 18-55 canon for about $50 on craigslist. :twocents:

Yeah That! I just saw a Canon 18-55mm on Craigslist for 15$ If I were spending 600 I would also get the Canon 40D or the 20D and a couple of lenses. I bought the 20D and have since added a 400mm lens and I'm only into to it for about 450 bucks! Looking to add a couple of lenses still but by the time I'm done I'll still only be into the whole deal for 600-700 and have the three lenses I want! ... at least for now ;)

Thanks for the advise. I am glad that I asked.

Ahh I might add at my starting prices! If you start asking Pope your gonna be spending alot more on lenses!!! I think to get started at least for me this is my plan and I know eventually when I get some things figured out I can upgrade and get better stuff but right now I don't even know what better stuff is! So what's the point??? :dunno: good luck! :)

I'm ok with cheap lenses. I just don't want them. Don't we all have 3 or 4 sets of cheap binoculars in our closet we regret buying now that we have a quality set? That's how I feel with cheap lenses. If you do it right the first time you don't have to do it again and again...

That's why you're the Lawyer, and I'm the Salesman! :dunno:
