FISHING RULE CHANGE
WASHINGTON DEPARTMENT OF FISH AND WILDLIFE
600 Capitol Way North, Olympia, WA 98501-1091
April 14, 2009
Drano Lake outlet limited to bank fishing during spring chinook fishery
Action: The immediate area around the outlet of Drano Lake will be limited to bank fishing only.
Species affected: All species.
Effective dates: April 16 through June 30, 2009.
Location: The bank fishing only area will be west of a line projected from the eastern most pillar of the Highway 14 Bridge to a posted marker on the north shore.
Reason for action: Over the last several seasons, the department has received numerous concerns about bank and boat interactions near the outlet of Drano Lake during the spring chinook fisheries. Bank fishing is limited in the lake and the outlet is a popular and productive area for both bank and boat anglers.
In the spring 2008, the department opened the adjacent mainstem Columbia to bank fishing only to provide additional opportunity and reduce conflicts just inside the lake. That effort had only minimal success as the result of limited access and prevalent windy conditions.
During the recent North of Falcon process, the department proposed a test to reduce the bank and boat conflicts by limiting the immediate area near the outlet of Drano Lake to bank fishing only during the spring chinook fishery. A similar bank fishing area at the mouth of the White Salmon River has been successful in reducing bank and boat conflicts.
Based upon public response, the department will move forward with the proposed test. If the test is successful in reducing conflicts, the department will propose making this rule permanent.
Other information: The remainder of Drano Lake will remain open to fishing from boats and the bank. The bank only area will be in place during the spring chinook fishery but not during the summer steelhead and fall salmon fisheries. The adjacent mainstem Columbia from Bonneville Dam to the Tower Island power lines (located about 6 miles below The Dalles Dam) remains open to fishing for hatchery salmon, hatchery steelhead, and shad from the bank through April.

one mroe reason NOT to go there.
-
Fishing kind of sucks there anyway compared to the Wind. Let em have it IMO.
-
I never fished the TOILET BOWL anyways so no harm for me.
-
Thats a crock of *censored*. Why should bank maggots be able to fish but not boats? Ive had good success fishing the "circle jerk". I know that place can get heated, but thats why I would generally fish it during a weekday. Sometimes Id like to strangle the people that make these ridiculous rules. Now the Wind can get good and crowded.

the wdfw are a bunch of retards and *censored*'s screw them who need's them. go hunt oregon way better hunting and fishing atleast the odfw know what they are doing.

IM also not sure why so many are pissed, you have better fishing ops closer to home, the kalama, lewis or wind up that way to name a few.. the wind is epic infact..best springer river in the state hands down when the fish are in, a 15+ fish day is not uncommon if you wait to keep your last fish, back in 99 when it ws 4 fish/person we had some insane days on eggs/sand shrimp.. I never gave drano any thought, to many people for the # of fish IMO, so this is not a big deal to me personally
-
Dude, its not just that they are closing it down for boats. Its bigger than that. What's next? Just like the *censored* they are trying to pull by killing off all the trout in the high lakes. Look at it this way, one less fishery you get to part take in.

its not closed to boats, just the area around the entrance, of course where 99% troll but certainly not the only place to hook fish in drano.. I dont think it will be as bad as most think, but I do think its kinda dumb, imgaine that, a wdfw change that doesnt really make any sense

The point is you could argue the same thing for blue creek. Better shut it down to sleds!
Pull your freaking head out guys!
Some of you guys seem really willing to allow your freedoms to be slowly eroded from little changes like this. You really want them to get the foot in the door... :bash:

I can't think of any headlines in the news about these "conflicts" What the word? Has there been fights, assaults, guns being drawn???? Oh I forgot this is the Drano not Reiter ponds :dunno:

There have been some yelling matches between bank guys and boat guys. A few of them have escaladed to where the cops were called in. Here is a pic of one of the reasons the boat guys are getting pissed. There is one guy down there that is causing the majority of the problems. Looks like he got his way.
There are definatly other places to catch fish in Drano but that is the most productive spot to catch springers in the early part of the season.

THat might be true but not everyone lives on the westside. Its the closest fishery for a lot of people. It really comes down to taking away something from the majority to give it to the minority. Next they will be closing the area off the pt at the wind becuase the bank fisherman need another place to fish. THis is just wrong

I am torn on this, since I used to fish from a boat, but most of my life have been a bank fisherman. Most boat fisherman, do not give even common courtesy to bank anglers. I have seen guys troll over an area where a bank fisherman was fighting a salmon. However, I have also seen bank fishermen tie on heavy sinkers and cast at the boats too.
That being said, if someone were to cast a hook like in the picture above, towards me or mine. He would need an ambulance. >:(

You guys need pull your heads out. No body is taking it away. There was an eticut and some of the boaters wont follow it. Its the boaters faults imo. I fished there for the last 20 years and seen it all. Its still a fishery, just gotta fish from the bank if you want to fish the bowl. When the boats get so tight that you have to wait 20 minutes to get a good cast from the bank then tempers fly. Its either that or your casts are reeling in boats lines, hitting boats or your limited to 10 foot casts.
Imo, the boaters are the problem and I am always in one. Never banked it there but always gave em room. Sometime, because of 24 foot guide boats you get crowded in too close and there isnt anything you can do about it.
The upper Wind river is a great fishery alright. Problem is its limited access and most older, or less abled fisherman cant make that dangerous journey.
The older folks and poorer folks deserve to be able to take some of these prized fish home too. And the Bowl is and Wind points are about there only 2 options. and these are small areas.
Now I wish they would limit the guide boats...
