Title: Omens, superstitions, (excuses) etc
Post by: Bango skank on November 02, 2020, 04:52:06 PM
So im treestand hunting elk during mf season this year.  Yes i know thats weird, but i think i got a good thing going, could happen.  But something happened today that pretty much ruined my hunt.

The last time i actually hunted elk was september archery 2015.  I was hunting a wallow on opening day and a skunk cruised by.  Im generally not a superstitious person, but its hard not to see that as an omen.  Did not get an elk.

Today heading to my treestand on my 38th birthday thinking id have good bday luck, the first thing i saw at zero dark thirty was a skunk crossing my path.  Damn.  Kinda took all the flavor out of things.  Motivation hovering around zero after that.  Makes it hard to want to put in the required time in that stand.  Think i need to change locations and tactics, get to boot hunting in a more elky area.

Am i the only one that gets ruined by irrational stuff like this?  Do superstitions and omens have any bearing on how you go about your hunting?

The skunk thing i just cant get over.  Im usually an extremely rational person, probably to a fault.  But this...  its hard to brush off.

Sounds like it's time to shoot yourself a skunk, get it done up nicely at the taxidermist. Take the power away from pepe le pew!

Not superstitious myself. I do believe that there is a God who is in control. He might have sent a skunk by you as a sign? Maybe try this. Keep a open mind. Hunt it just like you planned. See what happens. You can’t be sure the other skunk appearance had anything to do with the fact that you didn’t get one that time. If you get skunked this time, then you have a pattern. Still doesn’t prove anything. It is a opportunity to think about superstition and the spiritual realm and our interaction with it and the creator who the Bible says is spirit. When I say Good Luck. I mean it in a way that means “be blessed”. So. Good Luck!

Get an old elk tooth
Grab 2 chicken bones
Get a feather
Put them in your pocket
Drive to your hunting spot
Pull them out of your pocket
Toss em in a ditch
Go hunt
Have fun

You haven't had a hunt ruined until you've found a dead guy in the woods... :bash:

I tend to follow Ravens though. Of course part of one of my sleeve tattoos is Odin and Ravens.

Careful, corey whatshisname is going to label you an evil whitesupremacist nazi now that youve mentioned that tattoo.

I guess one could make inferences off all the tattoos that make up my full sleeves. Probably something offensive in there for everyone.  :chuckle:

Shoot the skunk
Sacrifice a chicken
Get drunk and dance around a camp fire
You should be good then.

Seeing as how 2 have commented about chicken parts......Interestingly enough, I have come across 2 different locations that someone has wired up chicken parts into a tree in the mountains. 1 was on the side of a old road, the other was 300 yards above a major Columbia river dam. Always wondered what the deal was with these.

We have a "fight song" that we have listened to as long as I can remember. We listen to the whole album Meatloaf's Bat out of Hell.  :chuckle:

Funny thread. Yes the double pink or double red starburst is certainly a sign of good things to come. And happy birthday Bango get after it whether it takes chicken bones, rituals, dances etc.

You know to a trapper a skunk is good luck. They stink things up nice and strong and bring in the critters to see what happened.... Just saying. I would take a skunk as a GOOD sign, and be all over hunting that spot or area. Mr stinky is covering your stink nicely ;).

Yeesh, I had a stink kitty walk directly under my stand bow hunting in WI one time.  The darned thing would not go away either.  I may have set my personal record that day for motionlessness time.  Come to think of it, I don't think I saw a single deer that night.

On Monday night hunting buddy and I were heading back to the house.  We came across 6 black and white mini police cars setting up a road block. Great driving skills and we came out unscathed.
