Has anyone been up in 247 this week looking around for deer? Curious to what the doe/buck numbers are lookin like in the early stages of the hunt. I’m heading over this weekend so I am curious on deer & road conditions.
-
Do you have a special permit tag?
-
Yes sir I do😎
-
Good luck...I have the archery tag. Call the Entiat Forest service.
-
You should wait until next weekend the 14th. I will check it out this weekend and give you a report after I am done. :chuckle:
-
Good luck over there hope you get some snow

I’m forbidden to shoot one this weekend anyway so I’ll be an extra set of eyes for ya :chuckle: Unless it’s a gagger buck of course :chuckle:
-
Good luck all of you
This is killing me.!!

Fixed it for you, there are no exceptions, no fingers crossed behind your back. You probably shouldn't even take a gun. :chuckle:
I am actually in the same boat, probably not shooting this weekend. I think it is going to get better towards the end of the week.
But........
if I see anything that has kickers and stickers, a droptine or is no doubt over 160 approaching 170 I am going to let the air out of it.
-
Cell service is pretty spotty but I will try to stay in touch up there when I can or hunt ya down if I see a potential buck that might match your wish list. I’m bringing my wife & she already asked how long we were hunting Saturday & if she could go to a spa instead.🤦♂️ :chuckle:

I was up there last weekend. Only saw does. The roads were mostly in good shape with a few icy spots. Sounds like that can change quickly. I was on the roads off the Entiat River. I have a late archery tag. Good luck!!
-
I haven't been drawn yet for the Entiat quality tag (rifle - 15pts :() but hope to before I am dead. What is y'alls general strategy when doing the late hunt? I know the unit fairly well having hunted just about everything from one end to the other. Do you guys normally start at lower elevations and work your up or go in the opposite direction? Are there parts of the unit you can rule out during the late hunt?
I'm thinking about taking the kids over next weekend to see what we can find. :)
-
I hunted this unit in 2000, the last year of an OTC late archery season. I drove in saw a 160 deer chasing does, hiked to where I saw him last, he stood up out of his bed and I shot him at 40 yards.
It worked really well in 2000 so I am planning to do the exact same thing in 2020. :chuckle:
If I don't see one right out the gates I plan to do a bunch of glassing. Really hoping that we get some snow next week. This weekend is really just about getting out and checking some spots for does. Wherever the does are is where the bucks will be at some point.
My tag is also good in Chiwawa so I will be covering lots of ground.

Jealous
-
A lot of good deer always move in this first week, been on the hunt a couple times and the best deer we saw were in the first five days.
-
Roads are wet but otherwise very good condition for this time of year. All the snow that came two weeks ago is gone. We have been cruising Slide Ridge and with chains could make it all the way over. With that said it was snowing today at 5500ft. We are not seeing the rut activity that we saw 10 days ago. The temps have been in the low 50's and the wind has been howling. Weather forecast looks better in next week.
-
My old man is heading over today and planning on staying through the season. I’ll be joining him for the final week. Sounds like we need snow 🤞
-
Heading over tonight.
It is going to take more coordination and sign off to pull the trigger on a deer this weekend than launching a nuclear warhead.
I will have my bow, buddy will have my rifle, another one will have shooting sticks and my wife will have the bullets. I hope I assigned the right people to the job.
-
Best of luck to you!!!! Hold out for biggie

And magically, out of the mist, that 200"+ plus giant will materialize. Unapproachable at 289yds. By the time you establish protocol, work through the logistics, and get in position to roll, he will be gone. Never to be seen again... :chuckle:
Best of luck with your tag! Hope to see a great story and pictures when it is all done!

:chuckle: Seems about right for 2020. Maybe I get the green light and just as I am about to squeeze off the shot a murder hornet stings me.

Right in the nut sack. :chuckle:
-
60 degrees and no snow right now at 5000ft. Need weather!!!
-
Heard a rumor today. :dunno: The WDFW director has this permit???
-
So I have another thread going detailing my special permit which allows me to hunt this unit and chiwawa.

I will say for this unit and the other one I can hunt the deer haven’t shown up in large numbers yet. There are deer there but they are not in large numbers. Two bucks have been taken as far as I can tell. One was taken Saturday morning and one was taken Saturday afternoon. Not sure what happened last week but I have to believe at least one more buck was taken.
This guy was 200 yards off the road Saturday midday but nowhere to be seen Sunday.
-
This guy was 40 yards off the road Sunday afternoon.
These were two of the best bucks I saw in this unit. Pretty slow right now. Hoping the snow next weekend helps.
Looking good for archery guys. BTW my tag allows me to hunt archery season with archery equipment which is my true passion. I hunted this weekend with the bow in hand even though it was rifle season.
-
Keep hammerin' He'll show...
-
That second buck has crazy long main beams before the first Y. Lots of mass and great eye guards. It’s like he started off strong and just ran out of food later on in a let development. Just weird but a really cool buck that I would have shot in a heartbeat with a general season tag. Eithrr buck would have hit the dirt with a general tag.
-
Good that you are seeing animals
Keep at it. The big bucks will start to show
-
:yeah:
-
This is what we are looking for Rick, quit playing with those little guys! :chuckle:

Oh My! :yike:
-
only going to get better each day!
-
The mountain snow forecast is favorable so I’m optimistic of seeing some good bucks show up
-
I would love to see something in between your photo and what I actually saw this weekend.
I agree more snow will help and hopefully bring in a little higher caliber buck.
Again everything that I saw I would shoot in a heartbeat with a general season tag. It was an awesome feeling to just walk away from those bucks.
Believe me I would focus on the big guys if they would just show themselves.
For those that have an itchy trigger finger there are some great deer out there to be had right now.
I am just not shooting one unless it is bigger than 160". I just have a few in the 140-160" range already and am going to be a little picky. I ate a colockum any bull archery tag in 2017 because I wouldn't settle and I don't plan to settle on this tag either.
I hope the big guys show up the last few days of the season so those that are patient can get an exceptional deer and there are still a few left for the archery guys to chase around.
-
That’s awesome you’re sticking to your guns good luck👍🏻
-
Be patient, I hope you get a 180+
-
I’m on that same kind of plan myself. Would love to find one that betters my 171 from Wyoming this year. Maybe a 140-150 buck will change my mind on the last day.🤷♂️
-

Weak eye guards.. not even last day general season
-
Good luck. I'll be up there during archery season...keep after em.
-
The beauty of this tag is seeing so many deer and just walking away from deer that you would shoot during a general season only to see another deer of the same caliber. In two days I saw five years worth of bucks. I may head over for the day tomorrow but I will definitely be there this weekend and all of next week.
-
Well share some pics if you make it over
-
For sure. I just bought a bluetooth camera for my spotter so I can show the pics of the bucks that we couldn't get into cell phone camera range of. The moose and two deer were close. The other bucks have been 300-400 yards out. Hopefully with this new spotter attachment I can get some more photos.
Let it snow let it snow let it snow.
I am a little concerned about visibility next week with all the weather coming in.

Yes, that was my thought too. Tomorrow looks to be a good weather day, after that it gets dicey. Maybe with that much snow coming though, the deer will get pushed low enough on the Entiat side that you are below the clouds. Less likely on the Chiwawa side. Nothing more frustrating than sitting in a cloud knowing there are deer all around and you can't see them.

I'll be looking forward to seeing the photos through your bluetooth camera. I've been kicking around the idea of getting one every time they come up on camofire.
-
I saw some younger bucks and one nice mature 5x5 chasing off the younger bucks from his girls
Might go up tomorrow as well, if not will be up sometime Thursday PM until the end of it.
-
Be there Friday mid day to get serious about this thing. Hoping to see lots of bucks showing up with the mountain snow forecast!
