I've been half heartedly trying to rattle in a blacktail for the last few years without any luck. I think i had one Thanksgiving day coming in, but if so he busted me before I saw him. I heard a deer blowing the alarm and running off.
I ended up tearing my quad that day going down through a clearcut. I went hunting all 4 days that weekend still but couldn't get way back where I like to hunt.
The following Saturday i had to work. On the way home I was talking to Jake (jakeland) about where I planned on hunting Sunday. I told him I wasn't going to our normal spot because of the torn quad. He told me he'd meet me on the way home and I could borrow his e bike and cart. That won't surprise anyone on here that knows Jake. :chuckle: he's a good dude and great friend .
Sunday morning I headed up the mountain about 8miles back. Got up there about daylight.....totally fresh and no sweat soaked clothes :chuckle:
I headed down a well used game trail down through some timber. It basically follows a creek down fairly steep slope. There was a fresh set of yearling size deer tracks on the trail I was following . About 500yards down the trail with 900ft of elevation drop I decided to stop and eat a snack.
There's a big rock bluff to my right with some vine maple ontop. Perfect place for a buck to bed. I can see about 100 yds through the timber in all other direction. I rattled for about 10 seconds or so fairly lightly. Dropped the antlers and grabbed a candy bar. About 5 minutes later I rattled again about the same amount and a little louder, not much though. I dropped the antlers on the ground near my gun. Just then I heard a branch break behind me. I looked back and here comes this buck on a mission looking for the bucks he heard. He comes right down from that rock bluff and onto the same trail im on. He stops 20 yards from me and is staring right through me. I thought....crap he's going to walk right to me and my gun is laying on the ground next to me :bash:. I didn't know at the time but the trail y'd right there. He looked to his right and fortunately took that trail
To the right. Now he's basically parallel to me at 20yards. As soon as his head went behind a tree I grabbed my gun and got on him when he got past the trees. BOOM! He took off straight down the mountain. I thought I missed :bash: I reloaded and walked over to where I shot at him. Found a 50cal hole in a tree with hair imprinted in the hole :). Looked on the ground and found a drop of blood. :D I started following his obvious tracks down the hill. Found another spot of blood and this time it was bright red and bubbles. I knew I had him at that point just had to find him. 10 yards later there he was behind a stump.
Of course there's no phone reception so no calling my son or Jake for help. :chuckle: I shot him between 11:30 and noon. Got him cut up and to the bike cart about 4:45pm.
That was probably my best deer hunting experience so far. Big adrenaline rush.
Now that I've actually rattled one in my confidence in rattling is high. I dont think ill be able to hunt any other way again. At this point in my deer hunting life just shooting any buck doesn't do it for me. It has to be a mature blacktail. That means you have to be ok not getting a buck every year.
Thanks again for the bike Jake.

Wow, he's a dandy!!!!
That had to be a rush.

Very nice buck and rattled in too!! Not a big deal, but what's with the pictures....the left and right antlers seem to change sides?? Maybe it's just late! :dunno:

I have no idea :dunno: thats wierd. I'm sure someone on here will have an explanation for that. Some kind of mirror affect i guess.

Awesome thanks!
-
Thats a big turd!!!!!! Nice pack by the way. I have tried rattling BT bucks also and never had any luck. Nice to see it does work
-
What a cool experience! Rattling in a big mature BT has got to be quite the thrill! Congrats on a great buck
-
 that’s a stud buck and worth every ounce it took this season as I know you put a ton of miles and time in hunting for a mature buck ! And again and again you gotta one up me every year !
-
Awesome buck
-
Great buck. Rattling and calling Deer is a blast. Congrats
-
well done
Hes a beaut
-
nice write up Ethan and buck. Here I thought you hiked in when I first saw your picture. They will probably be logging that area in the next few years as planned
-
Thanks for the write up! Incredible blackie.

Nice buck. I gotta try that sometime...

Great buck and hunt. WTG

Great write up and great buck. Good to see them coming into a rattle. I've tried it a bit, but not with a lot of confidence. Gonna have to keep trying now.
-
Nice buck Ethan!

Right place right time! Great buck!

That's great, love it when a plan comes together! I have never really given rattling a try, just half heartedly here and there like you. Every success story I've heard from guys rattling BT though is pretty much like you did. Light rattling in short increments seems to get them moving. It's odd because I've seen sign on roads of some knockdown drag out fights, but they don't seem to like aggressive rattling like whitetails do.

Good read and a stud buck. Well done!

Congrats! Awesome buck (nice mass!), and great story! Thank you for sharing! :)

Yea, I've seen the same sign of fighting that looks like they were tearing the crap out of each other. Until this instance the big fight was what I was trying to imitate.

Nice work!

I've got some spots that I really want to give it a try. I know there are bucks in them, but man they're just to thick to hunt otherwise. Maybe next year I'll get in there and give it a go.

I have had success with both styles of rattling. The knock down drag out, breaking branches, kicking brush as well as the softer sparring, not being necessarily aggressive. IMO, I think both work, dependent on the time of year, and rut, you are rattling.
Just my $.02
@Turner89
Really awesome buck! When I hear you and @Jakeland and others talk about how far you get back in some of these places, I'm always impressed and then today I read E-bike.... Haha :chuckle: Maybe you guys aren't superhuman after all!
-
If this is asking for to much info I understand.. Earlier in the rut thread we were talking about elevation affecting rut timing potentially for various reasons ( like snow melting later etc). Was curious what elevation this was roughly at?
-
Turner that is one heck of a buck and old Jalkeland is also one heck of a guy.

I'll be 50 years old in 2 months. :chuckle: Up until that day I road my mountain bike wherever I went. I bought a brand new e bike 2 years ago, but its a lemon. If I hadn't torn the quad I would have been on the pedal bike. Only because I didn't want to take the chance of breaking his bike. If my ebike was working I would be on it with a smile on my face.
I started pedal biking because I can get farther out than walking. Ill use an ebike for the same reason. I can get farther out with less energy than a pedal bike. To each there own
Here's a couple pictures of this years hunting season.

Great buck Turner and I still have that same cannondale you have!. I think mine is like 20 years old.

I hear you! I'm 47 and still riding my pedal bike in but probably only because E-Bikes aren't allowed where I am riding :chuckle: You guys put in a ton of effort and time to get your success, I was just trying to be funny. Awesome season pics too, thanks for sharing.

I see your problem Ethan you got way to much stuff in your pack you have enough in there for the 2 of you!! Your suppose to eat mushrooms up there for food and bike in your shorts so you don't over heat. Get that boy of yours to pack his share and yours. :chuckle:
-
that is a fricken stud blacktail, congrats! Love the set up too, my rambo is still in the shop, I should bought a different brand!! Not trying to be that guy, but in hancock property I can't use my e bike at all. could you say within a 100 miles where your find areas that allow e bikes and have that kind of access? locked gates that allow e bikes are hard to find, private or Forest service?? congrats again, really nice buck.
-
You have killed some studs in there. Congrats on another!

Your right, seems like there's always crap i dont need :chuckle:
Jake nicknamed my son the "pack mule". Always seems to work out that jake gets to use the pack mule and I get to wish I had the pack mule.
🤔😂

Fantastic old mature buck! A great description of the rattling process you used. I've rattled in Whitetails in ID but never tried it on Blacktails. Big Congrats to you!
-
You sure did. Congrats on a great BT mister!

Great buck and great story

Awesome story, pics and BUCK!!! Love it! That is very cool, congratulations.
