Title: School me on Roosevelt winter rainbows.
Post by: Karl Blanchard on January 06, 2021, 06:52:14 PM
I don't often ask for help but man I need a bit of fishing in my life and want to broaden my horizons.  Winter bank fishing for some fat rainbows sounds like fun. So what are the hot tips and tricks to catch some trout? Looking around keller ferry but open to suggestions. Thanks guys  :hello:

I use about a 4 foot leader size 10 gamagatsu treble hook using a bait needle put a couple power eggs above the hook garlic powerbait on the hook. Best tip though from me is dont cast out too far they are in shallow 10 feet or so sometime I actually can see my bait.

Fantastic guys! Thank you very much! I'm excited for some winter camping and river time. Thinking next weekend for my first run.....if the kids will let me off the hook from skiing  :chuckle:

I'll re emphasize. You can't go wrong floating powerbait off the bottom a couple of feet.

Imagine you’re fishing the I 82 ponds except it’s winter, and it’s not the I82 ponds it’s Lake Roosevelt.  :chuckle:

Seriously, same rules apply , little heavier line and warmer clothes. Couple good spots just above Chief Joe if you end up down that way.

Been at it for years since I was young pup. Now I take my young pups along for the ride.
Was there a few weeks back. Water was high but we managed several fish with a couple 20” for the boys. Hot bite was pink with orange power eggs. We threw everything at them and they kept at that combo. A little secret sauce never hurts too 😉
I like to use 4lb test and the ultra light rod. Fights like a steelhead with the light set up.

Karl it is pretty simple. I live not far from Keller but have seen a number of ways work successfully. Usually a worm and marshmallow and scent work with a slip sinker and four foot leader. Same setup replace the marshmallow with power bait. Or slip sinker with four foot leader and a sinker tipped with power bait. PM if you want more specifics with a spot to try at Keller.

I fish for them like I fish for steelhead.. Slip bobber, jig , and shrimp. Or cast a Krocodile in Bikini Pearl color. I have a two rod permit so I have one rod with orange power nugget tipped with a white power egg and the other rod the slip bobber. Of course I fish further north than Keller. Watch out for "native" redside.

Any good so far this year?

I use one of two different setups.

Steelhead size slip bobber set at 10-14' with half a worm and krill scent on a #8 baitholder.  Cast it out as far as you can and it will slowly drift downstream.

Or

Egg sinker, swivel, 4' leader, two marshmallows in either pink or green, half of worm and shrimp or krill scent on a #8 baitholder.  Cast it out as far as you can.

Use your steelhead rod and cast out as far as you can!!  That seems to be critical where I fish.  I have brought a lot of people down there and usually will out fish them 2:1 because they didn't listen and only brought their trout rod and can't cast out that far.

I fish Fort Spokane.

You can't go wrong with the rigs everyone else has already mentioned. Float bait 4' off the bottom, or run a steelhead bobber and jig set up. I like to squirt a little Mike's garlic gel scent on my worm and mallow. Sometimes I'll cast and retrieve a #3 Blue Fox, or a perch pattern floating Rapala while the kids have bait sitting out there.

You guys rock! I fancy myself a pretty solid angler but I don't fish much and 95% of my trout fishing was always rivers or mountain lakes. The big water is a bit out of my wheel house.  If I don't know something I defer to the pro's (you guys).

Anise marshmallows (2) to float a full nightcrawler up 2-4' at the first drop-off  :IBCOOL:

We used to catch some great fish on terrible cold days.

We've found this cold weather is the best time of the year to catch fish. Not the most comfortable though. As another poster mentioned, be aware that many of the bigger fish we hook are redbands or have adipose fins. If you fish where there is easy access seems the wardens are also out checking more this time of year.  Obviously from the posts, all types of baits and methods work so just go prepared to experiment a bit.

Cold weather is the best.. It was 2 below when we caught the fish in these pics. 15 fish in 45 min.A liberal dose of Lamprey Oil seems to work pretty well. I found a source for Lamprey Oil up in B.C. The trout love it.

Both.  They make quite a fillet for a trout

Ok, thanks for the pics/motivation to get after some. We haven’t fished near as much as we used to but that’s changing this year.

I fillet them and BBQ.    Sea salt, pepper , brown sugar rub about an hour before the bbq. I found a way to fillet the pin bones and have a completely boneless fillet. Put the fillets in a wire basket so you can flip them without the fillets falling apart. Soaked cedar shavings close to the flame on the bbq..Trout Candy.

Can someone help me decipher retention limit rules for Lake Roosevelt? for example: "Little Dalles power line crossing upstream 1.7 miles to marked rock point CRC (549)"... Searched Little Dales power line on google and it took me to Dalles, OR everytime. Specifically interested in waters upstream of Hunters. Which section of regulations cover that area? http://www.eregulations.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/20WAFW-VLR6.pdf - page 96.

Little Dalles is above China Bend.  Search Marble, Wa and it will put you there.

Beauty!

So for the pro's out there.....gamey blamed the high water for the slow bite. There was a dozen folks we could see and we only saw 1 other fish caught. Opinions on high/low water zapping fish temporarily?

Not sure if the high water makes a difference. Fished with Rasbo a couple weeks ago and we both caught limits. Unusually high from other times I’ve fished the lake though

From my limited experience on fishing Roosevelt any drastic level change will shut down the bite.  But it levels out after a few days.
I think you were privileged to a good bit of information.
Had you asked about people's honey holes you might have gotten a  bunch more. I usually fish farther north but it is still fishing.

Off the bank... nightcralwer and marshmallow off the bottom with a 3 to 4 foot leader.  Used some "Super Dipping Sauce" garlic blend for scent.
