I am starting look at wyoming for NR rifle deer or elk hunting and am not really understanding how there NR tags are allocated. :dunno: Is there any otc hunts? I see a lot of people build up 10 to 15 points before they try to draw anything. Is there no real options without waiting 10 plus years? Any general knowledge on how there system works would be appreciated.

Lots of opportunities in WY with zero or just a couple points. You're not going to pull any of the highly sought after tags, but still many great hunts that far exceed even some of our so called quality hunts here. Lots of really good opportunities for antelope with no points whereas deer and elk will take a little more work to be successful. Anything in wilderness areas requires a guide or a resident that is willing to guide you. Areas with lots of private are usually easy to draw for the most part, but you need onXmaps and good public road maps as they don't tolerate any trespassing.

Go to the Wyoming F&G site & look at draw odds. Preference points can be purchased starting in July & are necessary to guarantee yourself a tag at some point. If not everything is random draw. Figure out the type of hunt you want to do & start building points :twocents:

Look up Randy Newberg on YouTube, he has a video from last year or the year before where he explains the WY draw about as clear as is possible. It's not one of the more easy states to understand, but I think if you watch that you will at least get what they do.

wyoming's fish and game site is one of the better ones out there as far as ease of use. Use their hunt planner, FAQ and draw odds pages to cross reference Gohunt for unit descriptions.

There’s a bunch of good tags that are guaranteed with one point through the special draw. Most require at least two for the regular “buck deer” draw to be guaranteed.

Depending on what type of hunt you are after, the leftover/ reduced price tags can be a good option. Typically they go on sale in August and are about half price of the bull tag. The season is usually very long and depending on the zone there is some amazing country you can get into with those tags. This is as close as you can get to an out of state OTC hunt in Wyoming.
Beware of the Type 7 tag, as it is a private land only tag.

Use the f&g site to figure out regions,units,harvest numbers & draw odds. It’s a long wait for the tags most talked about on internet sights but likes been said by others here there is opportunities in Wyoming if your just looking for opportunity with no huge expectations.

I bought my first point this fall for elk and I'm excited to wait the 4 years to draw a general tag because it might take me that long to figure out which unit to actually hunt in. Was thinking of western wyoming units, if anyone wants to pm me some of their experiences on a general tag I would appreciate the pointers! Thanks
