Title: Olympic National Forest access
Post by: saudog on April 22, 2009, 04:13:20 PM: I am trying to find out how much access there is right now to the South Fork Sol Duc area, in GMU 607. I was driving around out there the other day and found the big washout on FS rd. 29, about 20 miles up the road from Forks. Supposedly FS rd. 2918 is washed out "at milepost 18" per the forest service site, but I can't tell where the start of that road is from my maps. I want to check out the Hunger mountain area, but I don't know if I can get up there. Any help from someone in the know would be great. Also, anybody hunted this unit before for Elk? The listed harvest results aren't that great, but you know how that goes. Thanks for any help!

Post by: Alan K on April 22, 2009, 05:57:30 PM: Yeah I hear the indians hammer the elk on the south/west penninsula. Luckily a lot of it is getting grown up. Being the road hunters they are it should save a few bulls for the hardcore hunters.

It used to loop from Forks (the industrial park) to CopperRanch road, 6 or 7 miles east of Beaver but that was cut at about the halfway point. It still is possible to drive between them on the 2912(? I'd have to look it up) but its a single track and quite brushed up last time I took it. The road is also blocked from the the top of the 29 road down toward the hot springs.

I've waypointed the ends of the road if you are interested....
