Spring is here, time for new updates. It’s been a crazy busy year thus far, we are remodeling our place in Idaho so that we have nicer accommodations. Doing all of the work ourselves so that’s the reason I haven’t been online much. The house had a flat roof and was built in 1936, we tore off the old front entry, built a larger front entry, added a pitch roof, and we are remodeling the upstairrs. (I had already remodeled the downstairs a few years ago). It’s been interesting working between hunts and between snow and rain storms.
-
More roof construction and exterior work...
-
Got the birds blocked out for the summer, also well along on the interior work, old kitchen removed and replaced, old crumbling chimney gone, new open floor plan in progress...
-
Took a break from interior remodeling and give the barn a remodel, it was/is a challenge to make an old leaning Barn square again! Is turkey season ever coming?
-
Finally the youth turkey hunt, wow, some fun times! First day 6 birds down, all the kids filled their tags!
-
More
-
We had a week in between that we did more remodeling then we got started on the general turkey season, the hunters got six birds the first day.
-
We’ve continued to have great success, the last group all filled out the first day, some of them shot a few ground sguirels too! Now we are waiting for the next hunters to arrive.
-
Sorry about the phone posting some of the photos upside down, sometime I'll try to straighten them out, just wanted to provide a quick update on what we've been up to so far this year.
-
In between all the remodeling and hunting I’ve managed to get most of my food plots in. Too funny, while I was still plowing this one two hens were picking worms and a tom is following them!
-
Awesome start to the spring!!!
-
Awesome start to the spring!!!
Yeah we got a good start on the birds, still no bear sign though, we've got a lot of our baits out in Idaho already and none are getting any bear yet. This warm weather should get them out soon though?
-
Too funny, the hunters are over at another property hunting and these Tom’s are in front of their cabin parading around their truck!
-
Guide Ray with a dandy Merriam’s that his hunter nailed first thing this morning! Bird called into 52 yards and wouldn’t come any closer so Brian put the hammer down and put this pretty bird down!
-
Courtney got the largest diameter spurs I think I’ve ever seen, these spurs are almost as big around as your finger!
-
Adam just nailed this dandy Tom, his first time hunting ever, the first morning he ever hunted, big Tom down with guide Daniel!
-
Ron from Wyoming nailed a nice Tom this evening with guide Ray, good job Ron!
-
Ian hunted these same birds all day, he stuck with it, they watch these birds bed down this afternoon, waited them out until they came out for the evening feed, And then nailed this Tom. After the Tom dropped another Tom came over and started mounting this Tom, They had to scare the other Tom away before he messed up the downed bird. :chuckle:
-
Good work Dale. Love the first time success!

Good work Dale. Love the first time success!
Yeah, that first hunt is always one of the best memories a hunter has for life! We are very fortunate to be a part of quite a few first hunts.
-
Seth and Joe from Virginia are on one of our unguided hunts. We provide lodging, meals, and directions where they should hunt. They nailed a couple of nice toms this morning, the first morning of their hunt. They are really enjoying the beauty and game diversity of northeast Washington. Tonight Joe tagged his second bird and they roosted 8 toms for Seth to go after in the morning. Congrats guys!
-
Seth is back with his 2nd bird, I'll add a photo to this post when I get it. They are napping right now, Joe's plane arrived very late in Spokane and they were in the AM getting to our place yesterday morning before going hunting, they only had an hour of sleep before yesterday's hunt.
-
Brian is a very successful turkey hunter but was wanting his wife Polly to get her first bird. They came on our one bird hunt, Brian waited for Polly to get her first bird and then he hammered a nice tom for himself. Awesome! He said next year he might bring a couple of the grandkids, we hope to see you next year!
This is possibly the best turkey hunting season I've seen, all our hunters have had opportunities at mature toms thus far! :IBCOOL:
-
Awesome birds!!
-
Green grass, apple blossoms ready to open, and strutting toms, you gotta love springtime!
-
Looking for the ladies...
-
Yesterday was the first hunting trip ever and the first day of their hunt, Ritsu Yamamoto and Ken Sato doubled on Jake’s, congrats guys! Later in the evening Ritsu tagged out on another jake and Ken passed a jake, he’s waiting for a long beard for his second tag. Congrats on your success guys!
-
Bubba Daves from Alabama shows off his birds taken on the first day of his hunt this afternoon, good job Bubba!
-
Ken Sotu nailed the mature gobbler he was wanting this afternoon. He passed numerous Jake’s today and had some toms that never gave him a shot opportunity, but he closed the deal on this gobbler just a few minutes ago. He's obviously a happy camper, congrats Ken!
-
Very cool
Are they still strutting

Looking forward so some bear hunt pics and stories
We are booked full for Idaho spring bear hunts, I don't think I have any WA spring bear hunts planned, this year I've had more interest in my spring bear maps for WA, we do have quite a few turkey hunters for WA this spring.

This surprises me a bit.....I can vouge for Dale and Bearpaw outfitters guides on their spring bear hunts in the NE. I have been part of 3 different hunts and all three went home with bears.....not to mention the other hunters in camp that also whacked bears while we were there. Wonder if you will get some who decide last minute when the figure out how hard it is to find the little buggers in that thick brushy country.
Nice birds as usual Dale.
-
Thanks for your kind words jrebel, it was our pleasure hunting with you
-
This year is the best turkey hunting I’ve seen in at least a decade, there are a lot of birds this year and a lot of mature birds. Shelby nailed a nice tom with guide Zach.
-
David from Dallas Texas arrived early in the afternoon, he changed and we got him out hunting for the evening, he saw some Jake’s and then hammered his first Washington Merriam’s. Congrats David!
-
David is originally from Mexico, he has hunted all over Mexico and the US, we had some good conversations about his experiences here in the US and in Mexico. He is well versed in what areas in Mexico you have to be careful and what areas are much safer.
The next morning was a little slow but we decided to hunt the same area in the afternoon, we had heard birds in the morning. Finally in mid afternoon he connected with his second Washingron bird, an even better bird than the first. Well done David!’

Some great photos!!!

Thanks Fred 👍🏻

Mark arrived last night and started hunting this morning, we had birds roosted but they fooled us a bit this morning doing what we didn’t expect, but lots of patience paid off and Mark just notched his first tag.
-
Mark filled his second tag with this bird in the afternoon with guide Zach, good job guys!

is that in someone’s yard? Looks like a nice plush lawn :chuckle:

Yes, it sure is, it's in my yard next to the skinning area, bird was killed on a mountain top and I took more photos when they got back because the first photos were fuzzy. If you look back through my posts you will see that quite a few phots have the same background! :chuckle:

I would have guessed this place.

Jess from South Dakota is one of our first bear hunters of the season, he nailed this color phase boar, our first bear of the season on the first day of his hunt, congrats Jess!

I would have guessed this place.

That would actually be a good place to hunt turkey or deer hunt if it was outside the city limits! :chuckle:
The Metaline golf course is a pretty good place if you have an elk tag in your pocket! :chuckle:

Loren from North Dakota was our other bear hunter this week, he stalked this color phase boar with guide Branden on the third day of his hunt, great job guys!
FYI: This bear measured 6'3" but he is pretty skinny, you get the hide off of some of these spring bear and their isn't much there, no wonder some of them die in their dens on long hard winters, this winter was an easy one and there were lots of huckleberries last fall but this bear is still pretty skinny. When you butcher a spring bear there isn't much fat to trim!

So that's what bears with hair on look like!!! :) Awesome Dale!!

Glad to see some bears hitting the ground. I’m headed back over next week for 3 or 4 days and am getting hopeful I will at least find some fresh sign this time.

The bear are just starting to get active, should be good hunting from now onward. These 70+ days are bringing them out!

Chase with his mountain top Merriam‘s taken in Washington state. We heard this gobbler on the roost on top of a mountain and raced toward him, he was a good bit away and we needed to close the distance fast, when we got close he came off the roost but went silent, we moved onward carefully and after another 1/4 mile I luckily spotted him in the trees, he displayed, I called, he stuck his head up and Chase hammered him, well done Chase! After the shot he rolled about 40 yards downhill, we found him and got some good photos, Chase told me he just about passed out coming up the mountain with his face mask on, we both had a good sweat going on! :chuckle:
-
Them bears from Washington or Idaho.
Low elevations or what ,just curious.
Great look in spring so far.
-
Tom from South Carolina with his first Mariam‘s Tom Turkey, outstanding job TOM.

Yes, they were really nice ones! 👍🏻

This morning Bubba notched his first tag on a bird from one of our blinds while I had Chase after the mountaintop gobbler. This afternoon Bubba and I got onto another tom, we saw him at 80 yards but the tom went out around us, a hen came by at 5 yards, quite a bit of time passed and then suddenly this tom showed up on our left at 25 yards, I nudged Bubbas knee and pointed one finger toward the tom, I made a quick noise, the tom raised his head and Bubba put the hammer down! Another fun hunt!
-
Nice!!!

-
Father and son craig and Alex finished their hunt with these two birds first thing in the morning, great job guys, way to get it done!
-
Thomas from South Carolina had a super exciting hunt this morning, the gobbler answered from a incredible distance and started coming their way, they seen him coming from way out, the closer he got the more he gobbled and the faster he came, the last little distance the tom was running straight at Thomas who pulled up and pasted the tom at about 15 yards! Way to get it done Thomas!
-
Chase sacked up his second bird this morning, there were some hens and Jakes in the way but they finally moved enough, I said take him and Chase dropped this tom!
-
John from Texas with his first Washington State Merriam’s taken the Forst morning of his hunt right after they came off the roost, nice going John!
(I was informed later in the day that this was John's first bird ever, how sweet is that?)

How is the bird population looking this year?

Bryan from Texas with his 2nd bird , both birds taken the first day of his hunt. Great shooting Bryan!
-
Tom from South Carolina with his 2nd Washington bird, he also finished his 1 year grand slam on this hunt, well done my friend!
-
Clay “a turkey call maker” from Lousiana was the second hunter in camp to fill his grand slam today, awesome job Clay!
-
Tripp from South Carolina finished off our highly successful Saturday of turkey hunting with his first turkey ever! We went out for an evening hunt and I made two series of extra loud yelps and we listened, there was a gobble about 500-600 yards up on a big southern exposure hillside. I waited for about 10-15 minutes and the bird gobbled again but a little closer so I gave him two more series of loud yelps and waited. Tripp spotted him coming about 450 yards out, at about 400 yards he gobbled again, I didn’t answer, I waited till he got to about 350 yards and gobbled again, I gave him the most sensual pleading yelps I could muster and then shut up. We watched him pick his way straight toward us, my heart was pounding, I was sure Trip’s heart was pounding, I wanted to call again but resisted the temptation, the bird continued to pick his way toward us, straight toward us. He stopped and looked numerous times but then he would start coming toward us again, by now he is nearly within range, I can’t see a beard, he’s big, has a big white noggin, looks like a big tom, but I can’t see a dang beard at all! My heart is racing, Tripp’s heart is racing, the bird is coming closer, I knew Tripp did not want a jake for his first bird but I was 98% this was a big tom with no beard, so at 30ish yards I gave him my finger signal to take him, Trip pulled up and smoked him, knocked him a floppin! I whispered to be quiet in case another bird was coming in silent, we’ll wait a few minutes quietly. Then I whispered that I had not seen a beard but I was 98% certain it was a mature bird with no beard, I could see the worry come across his face, I reassured him I wouldn’t have let him shoot unless I thought it was a mature bird, not sure how convincing I really was? Pretty quick I called it and we went to pick up the bird, as we approached I saw Spurs, what a relief that was! LOL
We took a few pics where he lay and then I picked him up and we headdd back to the truck, we got more photos along the way and exchanged comments about how exciting it was for both of us! Nice shot Trip, I love it when a plan comes together.
I am still amazed at how close these birds can pinpoint your position from a long distance, the bird walked straight to us and the last time I called was at about 350 yards!
-
I had a situation several years back. Called in a big old Tom that had no beard. We were in a ground blind. My son at the time was 10. He was up and ready to shoot. I could not see a beard and knew it was a mature Tom. Not seeing the visible beard we did not take the bird. As the regs state visible beard. Is there an exception?

I read the law as “male turkeys AND turkeys with visible beards”. I would interpret that as any male turkeys and hens with visible beards.
-
The wording changed a while back. I was unaware too earlier this year. It used to read birds with visible birds. A few years back, the most dominant bird in this flock we were watching had no beard. We figured he must have stepped on it too many times. :chuckle:

Jarod from Louisiana with his second bird taken this morning.
-
Joe from western Washington, his first turkey hunt, first morning, the birds didn’t cooperate after coming off the roost, so a careful stalk took care of that problem, his first bird is down, good job Joe!
-
How do them southern boys like our Mountain bids? Do they think the Gobblers sound further away than they are, like I did when I first moved out West?
-
They say the birds are higher pitched and hard for them to judge how far away with the terrain variations, sometimes further away and sometimes closer.
-
Greg’s second bird taken on the first day of his first turkey hunt.

 lots of smiles.

After Adam got his bird Rocco was able to put the hammer down on this nice Tom and notched his tag, congrats to Rocco and Adam!
-
Jay from Georgia had a great morning hunt, he called this bird from over 500 yards and watched him come the whole distance, awesome job Jay!

👍🏻 I agree it was a nice picture taken by the guide. They got another bear last night just before dark but I don’t have any photos yet.

Lot of happy hunters

Another nice tom down this afternoon, first shot wounded the bird, Dave had to run and close the distance to finish the tom, unfortunately some tail feathers are missing.
-
Lot of happy hunters
It’s been a super season, probably going to be our best season ever!
-
Daniel spotted a chocolate bear out looking for some lunch!
-
We had a gobbler at 30ish yards this morning, just right there in the brush in front of us, I was already mentally notching the tag, but somehow he just didn't present a shot, that was so close, I knew it was going to happen and so did my hunter, somehow that bird managed to escape us!
-
This photo was completely incidental, we are sitting in a blind this afternoon and I snapped a photo of some quail, a wood pecker happened to fly by, LOL!

Dave from Georgia was the last of these guys to tag out, we set up for an evening hunt, the smaller tom in the photo came by on our left, we could see a good beard on the bird but Dave needed to move about 5 feet in order to get a clear shot but a hen came from the right only 12 feet from us, we didn’t dare even blink, finally the hen circled around and moving away, I called and the tom started moving toward us more, but the hen was now moving away and of course the tom followed her, we didn’t quite get a shot but sat tight and waited a while. I finally called several times again and before too long we saw probably the same tom again on the left, he started to angle away, I called he picked his head up, just as I thought Dave was going to shoot he dropped his head and walked about 5 yards away, I called a couple times finally he picked his head up again and Dave hammered him. I motioned to Dave for us to sit tight, I knew there were other birds in the vicinity. The bird flopped out and we let him lay, after an hour we spotted some birds at long distance moving toward their roost so we waited another 10 minutes and I said let’s go, we got up slowly and carefully surveyed the area around us and spotted two more hens moving to our far left, then we spotted the big tom behind them, we waited for the birds to go out of sight and then moved about 20 yards and set up an ambush, we waited, first one hen came by, then the other hen, then the tom came, whammo, big bird down! This bigger bird had two beards, 8.5” and 6”, Dave was elated. These guys completed their one year slams on this hunt and Dave was the last of them to do it on the evening of the last day of their hunt!
The smaller bird with an 8" beard, probably a 2 year old had lost his tail, part of the fan was growing back, but part of the actual tail was missing so not all the tail feathers were growing back, I'm guessing a predator must have almost had a turkey dinner?
-
Jim from Colorado nailed this 7’3” Idaho Blackie yesterday evening on the first day of his hunt. This is our best bear so far this year.
-
7'3"!!!!!
My goodness. What a toad.
-
Looks like a big ole bear!
-
how much does a 7'3 bear weigh? is that from tip of tail to tip of nose?
-
how much does a 7'3 bear weigh? is that from tip of tail to tip of nose?
Yes nose to tail, there is no specific weight, but remembering back to fall bear that I have measured that were 7'+ here in Washington, they were all well over 400 pounds in the fall. I'm guessing a fat 400 pound fall bear might only weigh 250-300ish in the spring, but I don't know that for sure and it would depend on how tough of winter it was too?
This bear has a good looking noggin on him, he's a big bear but not as big as some taken in previous seasons in Idaho or Washington. I haven't seen it myself, I'm in WA doing turkey hunts, my son runs the Idaho bear hunts. The head will get green measured at the taxidermist just in case.
I decided to google weight loss in hibernation and got this, my guess was fairly close:
Weight loss during hibernation is extreme. Male black bears will typically drop between 15 and 30 percent of their body weight, while reproductive sows can lose up to 40 percent. Despite this grave weight loss, more than 90 percent of black bears survive the winter.
-
Thanks Dale!
-
Tim from Colorado attached his second tag to this boar on the 4th day of his hunt. Great shooting Tim!
-
7-3 wow nice Idaho bear

Ira from Maryland with one of his two birds taken yesterday on the first day of his hunt.
-
Ira with his other bird, congrats Ira for finishing your one year grand slam with us!

We were done turkey hunting by noon so we grabbed the .22 and did some rodent control on one of the farms we hunt. Ranchers are always happy when you thin the numbers a little.

Nice Ira!!

Yes, we had a blast.

Brian started this big boar shortly after daylight, the bear bayed up numerous times and then would walk or run a ways, dogs finally pushed him up a small tree, Brian got there the bear was hanging onto the tree by his teeth. Heath broke his back when he shot but the bear was plenty alive, Brian let the little terrier Chewy loose who grabbed the bear, Chewy kept the bear busy until Heath caught up to put in another finishing shot. Heath said he has been on four guided hunts trying to get a bear over six feet, mission accomplished!
-
Awesome!!
-
Heath doubled today, after getting the big blackie this morning with the hounds he dropped this chocolate beauty tonight while bait hunting! This boar measured 6 feet even, well done Heath, congratulations!
-
Heck of a good day! 2 great bears
-
Andrew age 16 from South Dakota stalked this nice boar this morning with guide Branden, they got within range and Andrew made a perfect shot, dropped him like a rock. I love it when a plan comes together!
-
Wow that's a monster bear. Well done.
-
You’ve taken some awesome bears this year, Dale. Thanks for sharing.
-
Nice!!!!
-
Really good looking beasts!
-
Thanks for the kind comments everyone, it’s very much appreciate, I’m fortunate to have some very good guides working for us and it’s really my son who manages that part of our hunting operation and those guides who are getting the job done. I just visited camp this morning and the guides were fueling up and I visited with the new group of hunters this week, they were excited to get going, the guides have been having a fantastic time in spite of the hard work and long hours, and the hounds are rested and ready for this week’s hunts. I’m on a run to replenish camp supplies to keep things going smoothly!
-
Tim from Indiana with his color phase boar taken on a stalk with guide Zach, great job guys.
-
Rich from California with a nice blackie that he wounded at a baits, they got “Chewy” the Jack Russell Terrier and he tracked down and bayed up the bear until Rich could get there and finish off the bear.
Some of you guys probably remember Ruby, she was eaten by a cougar two winters ago, Chewy is her replacement, he doesn’t have the same unique personality, but he is turning out to be just as effective at tracking and finding wounded game. In Idaho we are allowed to recover wounded game with blood dogs, during her life Ruby was responsible for finding many wounded game animals including a 6x6 bull elk, a trophy nontypical mule deer, whitetail deer and many wounded bear and cougar.
-
I like this photo, chewy is still pretty excited! :chuckle:
The bear measured 6’2”
-
:chuckle: :chuckle: AWESOME!!!

That’s awesome!!

John from Tennessee pulled off a great stalk this morning on this off color boar with guide Grant. Nice job guys!

Thanks, it's been a great spring, we had a record breaking turkey season, our best turkey season ever, and our bear season is going very well too, the bear season probably won't be our best but will probably be in the top 5 or 10 out of more than 40 years in the outfitting business.
-
Yesterday was a slow day, heavy rain and little or no bear movement. Today hunting is back to normal, Matthew from Oregon dropped this really sweet color phase bear with extra nice heavy fur this morning with guide Zach. Awesome bear Matthew!
-
Mike from New Jersey made an outstanding shot dropping this 6’8” beautiful color phase boar with guide Branden. Great shot and fantastic bear Mike!

What could be better than getting a color phase bear on the first morning of your hunt?
How about getting two color phase bear on the first morning of your hunt! Father and son Joe and Brad from Washington did that this morning, congratulations to both of them!
-
Awesome, what a great spring season!!!
-
Awesome, what a great spring season!!!
Thanks Fred, our last hunter nailed an old sow last night so we are pretty much finished for the spring season, it was our best spring season ever for turkey and one of our best for bear. Now have to finish a few ongoing building projects and start prepping for the fall hunts, I'm looking forward to what will be a busy fall season.
-
That is great. Lifelong memories for all the hunters. Only 5 weeks and you should have more bear hunters rolling in. Hopefully the success continues through the fall seasons. I know I can’t wait to get out and try to fill my second tag.
