Title: 458 Winchester question
Post by: BKMFR on May 17, 2021, 06:02:06 PM
I just purchased a Remington 700 classic that has been rebarreled in 458 Winchester with a 24" barrel, thinking of cutting it down and adding a brake for a total length of 21", any thoughts based on experience....no not needed for anything, but new toy to play with.... Planning on shooting bullet weights more in the 400 gr range than 500.
Any thoughts or comments from guys with experience with 458 would be appreciated. Scoping with 2.5x8 Leupold with Warne bases and rings.
Thanks,
BKMFR

I love me some 458.

I run a Ruger 77 RSM in 458 lott. I put on trijicon accupoint on mine. I am pretty sure mine is 23" barrel length. I run full house 458 lott loads in it. While it's a beast I am not to recoil sensitive so doesn't both me to much. The recoil with those bigger guns is more of a slow hard push then a fast crack of recoil.

Mine does best with the 500 grain pills. If you want to tame it down I don't think cutting it down to 21" and adding a break will hurt anything.

Received 458, shot it with 500 gr Hornady DGX's - Lots of recoil, but fun! Put 2.8x8 Leupold on it, going ahead and putting a Vais brake on it and cutting barrel back to a total overall barrel length of 21" w/brake, plus will shoot 400 gr Barnes if can find an accurate load, shooting same hole at 25 yds with 500 gr factories... gonna be a fun project...my new "Dangerous Game Gun" should be fun on California Hogs!

For sure!!! I’m going to try to shoot a bear one of these days with mine. I have a 375 ruger that needs a bear notch as well.

18 inch barrel, no brake.   Wears a 4X Leupold.  Fun to shoot with 500 grains.  My bullet of choice is the 350 grain Barnes X, a real bear and elk dropper.  Bell & Carlson fiberglass stock, bedded with a barrel mount recoil lug.

Not for the timid to shoot!  Pushes back pretty hard.
