I already own a 3/4 diesel that I will be keeping. I'm looking to replace my 1999 Mazda B4000. Must haves, 4x4, 6' bed, crew cab, full size, no Tacoma's, Colorado, ect. High on my list is the Silverado 5.3 mainly because they seem to be fairly bullet proof. Interested in the Ford eco boost, but don't know how long the twin turbos last.
-
I’d recommend not buying anything right now because you’re going to overpay for whatever it is you end up buying. The market is stupid right now. Reliable supply of new vehicles will come to us ~October per Ford.
-
I also don’t think I’d buy an ecoboost f150 in that price range because it’ll be an older/earlier one that were more prone to problems.
-
If you had to have one now, I would go with whatever Chevy with the 5.3 I could find. If you can wait, I would get a newer F-150 with any of the three gas engines.

:yeah:
-
Just say no to the eco booste, google research will tell you plenty about their problems.
How about a nice used tundra? Great long lasting trucks.

Spot On.... for $25K right now your going to get a 2013 with 150K on it.... wait if you can.
As an example, my daughter just sold her 2019 Kia back to the dealer she bought it from 18 months ago and she made $6k on it.
-
Waiting is definitely an option, no real reason to switch other than I want something I’ll use more. Perhaps now would be a good time to sell my Mazda while prices are good.
The internet has several 2012-2014 pickups with 100k-80k for around $25 right now.

2012 ecoboost is 2nd year and still more problematic than any of the newer body style years.

It’s a common trade in vehicle at the Toyota dealer. I see it often.
Trade in their problem child eco boost on a new tundra.
Another point… they don’t give them much for the trade, I don’t think they hold there value well.
-
I’ve had two Chevy 1/2 tons, a 07 and 17. Zero problems with both. Just sold my 2017 and the dealer said to wait a few months and prices would drop. Got top dollar for it and don’t need a truck at the moment. Have a couple buddies with Tundras and they have been bullet proof as well. Tough to go wrong with either. Although finding a good deal right now, even with 25k is tough! Drive your diesel a couple more months and it should get you more this fall.
-
I would go for a 2016 Ford, I think that's the first year with the all aluminum body and the mentioned issues seem to be ironed out. Probably won't get one of those for $25 for some time though. Best move is sell your diesel now, drive a beater for a while and between the sell high, buy later, you will probably save $10-15k.
-
@slowhand - are doing away with the 5.7 in the Tundra and only going to a v-6 turbo ?
-
Same boat kinda. We are currently a one vehicle family but I can't bring myself to pay the inflated prices. As jack eluded to, the market WILL get flooded with new vehicles and im betting a huge market correction is coming. Gonna be a lot of 2021's to flush out before the 22's roll out. Until then just gonna have to suck it up.
-
if you think chevy 5.3 are bulletproof you havent owned one with cylinder canceling, hope you save 9k for a new engine and while your at it go ahead and save for the tranny, silverados and f-150 keep our shop very busy. buy a tundra and dont look back.

Not saying one is any better than the other but in all fairness they sell more Ford and Chevy/GMC pickups in one month than Toyota sells Tundra's in a whole year so naturally you're going to see a lot more of those than the other.
-
I'm not ruling Tundra's out, but I've heard the mileage isn't that great on them. Also looking for a nice ride in the mountains, not like my 3/4 ton, which I'll be keeping for the heavy hauls.
Something else I'm wondering about is the off road type packages such as the Z71 or Ford's FX4. Do these provide a smoother or rougher ride when on rough Forest roads?
-
I am somewhat in the same boat. I have been looking to replace my '02 GMC 3/4 ton since September. Found one in October, put a down payment on it and the salesman pulled the rug out from under me the night before I was to pick it up. Ordered a new one in April only to have GM reject my order saying no new orders until 2022. Any new ones I can find are now 5K or more over MSRP. Wait if you can, that's what I've resigned myself to do.
-
Can't get a tundra with a crew cab and a 6ft bed.

Ive had a 18 f150 FX4 and currently a 20 f150 regular 4x4. I cant tell a difference between the fx4 and regular 4x4. The one nice thing about the fx4 was the hill decent control mode but I dont miss it on the new truck. If you get a ford make sure its got the locking diff

i have a 2013 f 150 with the 5.0 its a power house and i havnt had a single problem stay a way from the eco beast no replacement for displacement. a truck shouldn't need a turbo unless its a diesel.

No affiliation with the seller but who is paying that much fo a truck with 360,000 miles on it.
-
I've had a couple z71s early one 92 had a 5.7, newer ish one 99 had 5.3. No issues with either one ..easy to work on to.....99 rode like a Cadillac...
All my stuff now is hd stuff so no recommendations on never models.

LOL.
You should drive one of the 3.5 Ecoboosts.
I don't disagree that the 5.0 is a good engine and something that should be considered, but the 3.5 ecoboost will run circles around the 5.0 from a power standpoint, especially when towing.

Not that I am aware of.
I know we will have a hybrid model tundra next year.
In one of my tech classes I complained about having to buy a super duty to get a diesel tow vehicle. Being a Toyota master tech driving a Ford I get a lot of poo from everyone.
The instructor said he got to drive one of the pre production hybrid tundras, he said you definitely will not want a diesel after you drive the hybrid tundra (massive amounts of powers).
We will see
I love love my ‘15 6.7 diesel f350
It’s been nothing short of perfect since new
-
I think when the time comes and the prices are (more?) right, I'd find a 15 or newer F150 with either the 5.0 or the 3.5eb, super crew with the 6.5' bed. PS the beds are either 5.5' or 6.5'. No 6' bed. You can get the 3.5eb with max tow and be rated to tow 13k pounds if it's properly equipped.
-
This is just me but I have been holding off this year because of the crazy prices... I just heard a rumor that Ford received a bunch of the computer chips they were waiting for to ship F150s out.... can't confirm if it's true (Jackelope?) but after the stockpiled trucks start hitting the lots, I'm guessing there are going to be some serious deals and 0% financing offers....

We got a few new trucks and transit vans in this week. I heard rumor that they’re going to ship trucks without the chips and have us install them after the fact too. Can’t confirm that.
It’s not just trucks either. We’ve got 12-15 Focus and Fiesta’a sitting here with bad transmission control modules waiting for parts that we can’t get.

A hybrid and not a twin turbo? From the rumors more power than the Ecoboost and better mileage. Will we have to get a 15 year mortgage to afford it?

The hybrid f150 makes more power than the ecoboost now too. More tow rating too. Hybrids will take over the lead in power.

I would love it if a HUGE wave of trucks came available....... and I could pick one up at a reasonable price.

Ya, read about that a month and a half ago and this is exactly where my speculation of great deals to come is based on.... it's insane

Tundra is the most overrated car on the market, next to Tacoma.
You’re likely to get one with a crappy rusted frame and bed, has or desperately needs suspension upgrade and then you’ve still got 20 year old technology.
2015 F150 has been flawless with 118k.
Ten years driving a Toyota and I would never go back.

I love this video!
Reminds me when the rear window shook loose on my Tacoma driving in the mountains.

OP-This is a more educated look at why 'you can't go wrong with a Tundra'.
Toyota fanboys will want to turn down the volume so you can't hear the audience literally laughing at the Tundra.

I bought a used 2007 Toyota tundra with 38k miles on it in 2014. She now has 180k rough miles on her. Been a real piece of garbage for me. List of things I've had to fix or replace on that truck are as follows:
• all 4 rotors at 150k miles
My next truck won't be a tundra due to the fact I can't get a crew and 6.5ft bed. It'll likely be an f150 xlt ecoboost.

ha! I had two fords prior to the tundra. Both 7.3's. Great trucks. Id be getting another tundra but like I said, gotta have the crew cab and a 6.5ft bed and they don't offer it. Their crew max is so over the top huge. Chop a foot out of that cab and put it into a longer bed for God's sakes.

Good for you.
It's all how you use it.
My 2006 Tacoma was completely outclassed by basic hunting and fishing needs.
Needed massive upgrades to simply be competent.
Based on the videos I posted, I would not want to drive a Tundra on the washboard or basalt roads I use for hunting and fishing, especially after 100k miles on it.
BTW, I have a 6.5' F150 SC.
Love the thing other than parking is a pain.
Full disclosure- I have added some modest suspension and 33" Falken Wildpeak tires.
I do LOTS of research before I add any mods.
You're welcome to take a look at it.
PM me if you're curious.

All how you use it? You implying mine is a freeway queen?
I dont know if you've noticed yet thinkingman but nobody cares what you think of toyota. You are sooooo over the top you've completely lost any credibility on the subject of vehicles. Tone it down a bit and somebody down the road may take you seriously on here. And I'm far from a Toyota leg humper. Ive owned a dozen trucks over the years and only one has been a Toyota. Its also been the only trouble free vehicle I've ever owned soooo :dunno:

Sorry, Karl.
You were not my intended target.
I hope the Toyota Leg Humpers don't summarily dismiss the information I post.
That would be like liberals voting Biden no matter what the facts are.

You've done a pretty good job of ensuring that.
This thread is making me think I should sell my 2012 F150 with 110k miles on it, ride my bike for the next 6 months, and buy a new truck!
