Title: 108 Douglas Any Bull Moose Tag
Post by: jw4x41 on August 13, 2021, 01:20:06 PM: I have posted on here previously about this late season Moose tag and was hoping to get a bit more info. as I have gained a bit more knowledge on the GMU 108 Douglas. I discovered I have a friend that lives in Onion Valley on 20 acres backing up to Hancock lands. Does anyone know if this is a good area for Moose? He states he has only seen one about 2 years ago, but he does see lots of sign. he doesn't get out all that often.
Also what are appropriate gifts to bring for those in your hunting party. I was thinking along the lines of personal engraved knives and pair of binoculars. Any suggestions, is that over kill??
Are 12x52 Bino's a good choice for that terrain? My apologies if my questions are random and numerous. Getting excited for the late hunt.

Post by: jrebel on August 13, 2021, 02:08:41 PM: 12 power binoculars will work fine as well any good 8 or 10 power glass. The 12's will allow you to pick apart the animal at longer ranges to see if it meets your goals.

Why are you buying gifts for you hunting party?? It would be gift enough to help a buddy out on a once in a lifetime hunt. Moose are huge so throw a little meat their way as a thank you.

I can't speak to the area but finding a moose shouldn't be that difficult. Time in the seat and eyes in the glass will turn up moose that time of year. I'm sure as it gets closer, other members will chime in via PM to help you out with specific areas. Most hunters want people to be successful on these OIL hunts.

Binos are fine.
Moose are big and in that country you can see them from a ways out. Since you can't see more than a half mile anyway.

Moose all over in that area...get over and do most of your scouting in Oct during the rut. Get an idea if what's where...moose are funny. You don't see allot of them until your start looking. I'm pretty familiar with that country and can send ya some details once the season gets closer.

Post by: Colville on August 13, 2021, 11:07:44 PM: Colville NF office right in colville. Walk right in and ask about 2 to 4 year old cuts in the unit. Even if its not season, go and see where you can glass them best dont wait for OCT.

There will be areas you need to glass from hillside to hillside and then figure out a play. A lot of guys don’t bring spotters because they figure it’s to thick but it’s all about the angles. Snow can be a problem late in the hunt, so hit it hard from day one covering as much area as you can. I saw 14 different bulls in 12 days of hunting. Pm me if you want to talk some night.
