Title: Camo suggestions?
Post by: RockScar on November 28, 2021, 09:39:07 AM
I'm new to hunting and trying to get what gear I'll need for the spring season. Looking at going after turkeys in the Spokane/Coville area and the Cle Elum/Teanaway area. What camo patterns do y'all suggest? Do I need face and gun coverings (blued Mossberg 500 with wood stock)?

Thanks!

My opinion pick the company or pattern you like the best and learn to be still. Turkeys in the spring do have the best eyes but you could just pick up a leafy type jacket to add to your kit. Many animals have been killed wearing jeans and red flannels. Wind and movement are your enemy. Sportsmans warehouse has their brand which has a nice pattern and is fairly affordable. Sitka Sub Alpine, Firstlite Fusion and Kuiu Verde are 3 of my favorites but price is up there. Probably my favorite of all time is Realtree Max1.

I just don't hunt turkeys so I get camo that works for all and use a leafy jacket and pants for turkey.  I wore blue jeans with leafy pull over panyanthis spring.  With a aiktka subalpine 3/4 zip.  Movement is the killer with turkeys.  Make sure you don't wear read white or blue.  That is the color of tom turkey heads.  Face cover is an absolute and gun is no porblem.  Have killed a few with wood stock and blued barrel.  Turkey bio told me that a turkey'd eye site is equivalent to use reading a book a 100 yards and they see in color.  Good luck.

As has been stated, get whatever camo you can afford and like.  As long as you have good back cover and know when you can move, if needed, and when you can't, the camo pattern itself likely won't be what keeps you from killing turkeys.  I run a lot of MossyOak patterns, as that is what I grew up with and what my eyes seem to be drawn to, but I don't think any of the animals I have harvested really cared which pattern I was wearing.

No need to get fancy.  I killed 4 turkeys last autumn wearing a rattle-can camo painted Carhartt vest.  But I do like those portable ground blinds with the fiberglass poles to stick in the ground.

I've thought about these types of ground blinds, also. What do you use? And what blind would you suggest for a run & gun style of hunting?

Another vote for not getting fancy, just get something you like & can afford. The first few turkeys I killed I was wearing carharrts. Now I just wear my bdu uniforms from when I was in the navy.

Most anything will work.  I would say yes to a face covering....it helps keep the skeeters off.  The gun will be fine IMO.  Sit somewhere with a good brushy backstop or up against a tree so it helps break up your outline.   Sit still and don't move, turkeys eyes are amazing and they get skittish easy.  They are otherwise pretty dumb this time of year so calling them in isn't rocket science.  If you have birds coming in, make sure your shotgun is up and ready before they get there.....again any movement will turn them the other way.

Mine is a hand me down. I guess the fabric part is about 18 inches tall and has about five poles to hold it up. Very quick setup n takedown. I don’t take it I need to run n gun.

Here is the camo I used to take four turkeys last year. It’s about hunting rather than gear. :)
BTW, young birds aren’t as tough as old trophy birds.
