Title: L or S primers
Post by: Blacklab on February 06, 2022, 03:36:43 PM
Trying to find brass for the 6.5 Creedmoor. Which I found some but they were small primer pocket. anybody use the small primer pocket Creedmoor casings. I have like 24 casings that are large primer. Anybody notice the difference. Not understanding the benefit of large or small. Except the availability.

Here is a good read.

Likely not enough difference to matter for most shooters though it does seem that the small primer 6.5 could produce slight better velocities.

I shoot large primer just because I didn't want to switch over to the Small.  If I was in the market and didn't have a ton of brass already.....I would go with what I had the primers for and what was available.

Anyone who thought making cases of the same caliber with different sized pockets was a good idea should be removed from society.

6.5 Grendel has similar situation as 6.5 Creedmoor where some brass suppliers use small rifle primers and some use large rifle primers.

Then there is Lapua.....their website says their 6.5 Grendel brass uses large rifle primers.  Except no it doesn't.  It's small rifle primer.  I found that out the annoying way while trying to load a large rifle primer into it.  Pulled out calipers and compared to another round that does use LRP.....yep, Lapua's website is wrong.  Their 6.5 Grendel brass doesn't take LRPs.

Wow! I never noticed that with Grendel. But I haven’t bought brass for it at least three years. always used large primers mainly Hornady brass.

Small pocket has a stronger case head. More brass.  So those cases can handle a little more pressure before pockets get loose. If you have or can find small rifle primers go for it

Nosler has brass for $38 / 50 pieces right now.  Great price and I have always had great luck with it.

I also shoot starling LP brass and it has been great brass as well.  Local shop here in town has some starline....not sure what the price per 100 is.

Found some 6.5 creedmoor Starline brass on midway. Able to pickup a 100 pieces L primer. Next time small primer brass to see if there is a difference in accuracy :dunno:

I went the small primer route as I wanted the little bit of longevity since I was buying Lapua brass and the fact that I had a case of 5000 CCI 41 primers sitting around.

Probably not much for accuracy but the small pockets will last longer before going loose

SR15, amen.  That was the genesis of my comment.

Did you have any primers go off?
