Ohio Mayor Says It's a Slippery Slope from Ice Fishing to Prostitution.
The mayor of an Ohio town recently voiced his opposition to allowing ice fishing at a local park by inexplicably linking the pastime to prostitution.
Mayor Craig Shubert of Hudson, Ohio recently voiced his opposition to local ice fishing by stating that it leads to prostitution.
Mayor Craig Shubert of Hudson, Ohio recently voiced his opposition to local ice fishing by stating that it leads to prostitution.
Mayor Craig Shubert of Hudson, Ohio, made his comments at a council meeting this week during a discussion about the safety and liability issues that might arise if the city allows ice fishing at Hudson Springs Park.
"If you open this up to ice fishing, which while on the surface, it sounds good, then what happens next year? Does somebody come back and say, 'I want an ice shanty in Hudson Springs Park for X amount of time?'" Shubert asked. "And if you then allow ice fishing with shanties, then that leads to another problem: prostitution. And now you have the police chief of the police department involved. Just some data points to consider."
Ice shanties are portable sheds used to provide shelter while fishing.
In response to the mayor's comments, city council member Chris Banweg responded, "That's why I'm not in favor of shanties." Attendees laughed.
Ice fishing has been prohibited at the park for several years, according to WOIO. While the city council's decision on whether to allow it is unclear, city council members said that the city should make residents aware of ice fishing's dangers.
Ice fishers can fall through the ice into sub-zero waters, injure themselves with fishing equipment, set themselves aflame or even inhale toxic levels of carbon monoxide due to rudimentary heating systems inside of ice shanties, according to a 2017 Mayo Clinic study on ice fishing injuries.
I didn't know this. :dunno: :chuckle:

This sounds like a Babylon Bee article!

Shaggin in the shantie!!!!

I've been icefishing alot.... and while innuendo are often present i've never seen it escalate to that level. Maybe I'm doing it wrong.

"Ice fishers can fall through the ice into sub-zero waters"
That is not even possible. If the water is sub-zero, it is already way below turning into ice, therefore if you fall into sub-zero water, might end up with a bruise or two, but not drown. The air temp may be sub-zero, but the water temp below the ice is above 32 degrees. This statement came from the Mayo Clinic? Hopefully someone who is not too sharp paraphrased their study.
-
Not sure about this. It's really cold outside icefishing,I'm pretty sure my equipment is going to perform in frigid temps.

My experiences ice diving was that the water was 36 to 37 degrees below the ice. The Puget Sound varies from 48 to 54 in most places (by contrast).

:yeah:
It’s their science not actual science.

Believe it or not but you can have liquid water until -55f. Probably doesn’t happen much if at all in nature but it can def be below freezing and still be liquid. Kind of crazy but pressure and other things can affect it.
-
Moving water can be colder than 32, but I'm guessing there isn't much of that going on in a town pond.
My guess is the mayor knows something about shanty life the rest of us don't. :chuckle:

Much the same can be said for using RVs for hunting. They may lead to prostitution!!! I've thought that an RV full of hotties might well make bank during hunting season traveling around from camp to camp. Thank you mayor.

As any Minnesotan will tell you, when ice fishing, the correct term is "Frostitution"

Ha! :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle:
With hunting, I believe it's called Rutting for Dollars.

Back in the heyday of pheasant hunting in the Dakotas there was actually a flow of "working women" who went to the Dakotas during the season. :chuckle:

We now have a qualified response. :IBCOOL:

Charlie Berens is always SPOT ON

I'm getting old enough where i worry about having a heart attack while performing...now i have to worry about falling through the ice while coupled? ...Crapola Dontcha know!

That dude needs to talk to a therapist? :dunno:

Maybe it’s just me, but it seems with the advent of algorithms driving much of the information within news organizations and social media, it seems it’s a race to the bottom for people seeking attention, regardless if they’re politicians, celebrities, or media talking heads…who can come up with outrageous BS to be quoted on🧐

Thank goodness Mayo Clinic finally did a study on ice fishing injuries! That was way over due 😂 it can get pretty western and dangerous sitting out there staring into a hole. I must have been ice fishing wrong all these years if it leads to that stuff. I also just realized my ice house is really insufficient too.

I saw the second video posted on FB and thought it was one of those dubbed videos where they make it sound/look like someone is saying something they are not. Hard to imagine that this was real and the audience didn't laugh the guy out of the room.
This is a Republican mayor, BTW. ;)
-
Unbelievable, how could anyone believe that line of thinking. However, back in the heyday of elk hunting on St. Helens. I can't remember the year. There was 2 guys from Olympia camped near us. They hired some local talent from Portland to help with elk camp duties and got caught. They did not show the following year, must have still been in the doghouse. They were back they next year with a full size cardboard cutout of Elvira in the driveway to their camp. That is when we got the whole story

Is he speaking from experience :dunno:
Even in my randiest days, this would have been the furthest thing from my mind in sub-zero weather staring at an Ice-Hole. :chuckle:
Think of the logistics, do hookers go from Shanty to Shanty looking for business?
Or do the fishermen bring them out on the ice, to what disrobe and do the nasty in sub-zero weather?
I think the Mayor has un-resolved fantasies :hello:
-
Yikes.
There was a TT up on the Manastash rd during elk season every year that had a LOT of different vehicles around it day to day. There were rumors about it that I think were not rumors.
-
That's one way to service a fishing pole.

That's one way to service a fishing pole.
But Ice fisherman have such tiny poles :yike:
:chuckle:

No silly, you just stick your pole out the window and wave it around a little bit and they come a-skatin'. Rookies.

Maybe he had this type of ice shanty/castle in mind
https://www.milacaunclaimedfreight.com/shop/ice-castle-fish-houses/rv-ice-castle-fish-houses/hybrid-with-slideout-rv-8-x-22/
Will admit this makes my 4 ft by 8 ft insulated/ plywood shanty look pretty cheap, even with the wood stove I had in it

Only 6800+ lbs dry.

If you ice fish in a place that can hold a 7K trailer plus the 3-4 ton fullsized truck needed to pull (it for many weeks in a row so it is worth the investment), then you probably need something that robust to deal with the biting cold it takes to freeze that much ice!!
What would that be, 18-20 inches of clear ice?
From the MN DRN:
For new, clear ice only
UNDER 4" - STAY OFF
4" - Ice fishing or other activities on foot
5" - 7" - Snowmobile or ATV
8" - 12" - Car or small pickup
12" - 15" - Medium truck
Double the above thickness guidelines when traveling on white ice
White ice or "snow ice" is only about half as strong as new clear ice. Many factors other than thickness can cause ice to be unsafe.
-
I read on another site that the Semi-Trucks need 40 inches.
-
Just out run the crack.

Mopar. There's your answer.
