Yakima river in the canyon is where I see everyone fly fishing. Few ponds that have fish in them. Be careful over by hubbard. There’s been a few shootings right there and a few homeless that squat in the woods behind it.

The Yakima river will have a skwala stonefly hatch starting up and the river levels are down this time of year. Water is warming up a little and fish will be looking up.
Not hopper season, but it’s pretty straight forward fishing if he can huck a fly.

If you're in to fly fishing it will be staring next week as Jackelope stated. From below Roza on upstream. Weather has been cold so fishing deep and slow willl be the ticket.

before Roza isn’t open until Memorial Day, so don’t fish below the dam

The stretch above the canyon they call the farmland section. It’s a little better from the bank than the canyon and more interesting imo. Try a hopper dropper setup with a size 8-10 stonefly pattern for the dry fly. The natural skwalas are kind of a dirty olive color, but size is more important. There will be blue wing olives hatching also, try any small tungsten head bwo nymph for a dropper. Tight lines

I’d use 5x tippet unless you’re throwing streamers. As long as the kid can handle a possible bigger fish on that lighter tippet.

Reds should have them up the river.

I know very little about winter time fishing.
But this video cam up in my YouTube that I thought was interesting.
You could make these with a rubber band, fishing line, and a hook. :dunno:

I didn't have as much down time as expected, we did check out the river and its was way up and moving fast decided against a frustrating day of hooking weeds and willows casting flies. So I took him to Sarge Hubbard pond and he caught two on a blue fox, one sixteen inch and a twelve. We ran down to the I-82 pond #6 and I managed a nice 18 inch rainbow on power eggs.Fun place to run around.  Thanks for the tips and will be back to fly fish the river.
