Title: Looking for a very old book, or at least a reprint.
Post by: Goshawk on March 17, 2022, 09:46:54 PM: When I was a kid there was a reprint of a trapping book in our school library that I checked out several times for it's historical value. I've searched the internet several times over the past 5 or so years but have never found it.

The title was something like "The US Government guide to trapping fur bearing animals in the rocky mountains". It was first published in the 1880's

Ring any bells for anyone here???

The one I'm remembering was a guide to trapping the Rocky Mountains and started out with a list of all the items needed for one season including how many horses, grain, salt, lard, etc, and chapters on each animal and chapters on each. I do remember in the title is was something like "The US Government Guide to trapping fur bearing animals of the Rocky Mountains". It also had a chapter on how to deal with wolverines that were robbing your traps. There was a line in that chapter that stuck with me.

"Everything you need to understand about the wolverine can be summed up this way. Every Indian word for Wolverine roughly translates into "Demon of the woods." Not an exact quote, but very close. The written English was a bit different then. It also went on to say a wolverine that discovers your trap line in a hard winter will kill you through starvation. The "cure" was to place traps randomly along your line without bait so any wolverine tracking you would get caught. Upon encountering a wolverine in the trap, you were instructed to shoot it where it lay since they could survive freezing weather for a week even when in a trap. Even the chapter on grizzly bears was not that paranoid!
