I snagged on to a poached one before.
It was just the head with a large rope through the mouth to gill area but it was a monster.
Guessing a solid 9 feet or so.
It really made me mad to see such a beautiful animal go to waste.
I mean what were they gonna do sit around and catch a few more?
One of my buddies and I were abalone diving in ca and saw 4 butt wipes keep 70 or so.
We pointed right at them when the fish and game flew over us.
The law took there kayaks, tents, trucks, camping gear even pots and pans and only left them with their cellphones and a notice to appear.
Abalone season has ceased for years now due to low numbers and guys like that helped made that happen.
Now my kids can’t dive for abalone.
Screw all poachers

Not defending a poacher, but I'm assuming it didn't go to waste if they cut the head off and took the rest? Or was the rest just eaten away?
Pretty cool that the story from the OP ended up with 5 released sturgeon!

It likely wasted decades of breeding possibly thousands of fish. :dunno:

I wish they'd publish names.

There has been a group that has done this for years on the Washington side of the river. We have found and freed several large sturgeon that were tail tied to the bank and left. Presumably for when they were less obvious. We have turned it over to WDFW and never hear anything back.

When they opened sturgeon fishing back up on lake Roosevelt a few years ago a couple Russians got caught with a van full of fish at the boat launch. Yes, a mini van with the back seat folded down and stuffed full of sturgeon when the annual limit per person is 2 fish. Supposedly they got fined per inch of fish and were cited for not having licenses. My guess is they set up a minimum monthly payment program that they quit paying immediately and they’re still fishing without a license today.

That head wasn’t cut off it was chewed off and aged.
Probably a sea lion or something like that.
They might have dumped it due to an inspection.
Yes it did take out a magnificent breeder.
I find it hard not to generalize when the same group or groups of people consistently do these kind of actions >:(.
