Title: Halibut rod & reel?

What do you guys recommend for a halibut setup?

Currently looking at the Shimano Tekota 500 or 600 ... cant decide which but leaning towards the 500.

Thinking 50# braid? Maybe 65#?

Rod .. no clue yet ...
 - length?
 - power?
 - action?
 - line weight rating?

Recommendations would likely be somewhat different depending on where you plan to fish for halibut.

A 5-foot rod with broomstick like action and a reel that can take many hundreds of feet of heavy braid.  50lb would be minimum. Needs to have a good drag.  A long crank handle helps with leverage.   

You don’t need anything special, just something that can haul a 4x8 sheet of plywood from the ocean floor, up about 450 – 500 feet.

I use 80# braid on extra heavy okima cedros rods.  But I only fish halibut in the ocean and use 4# pipe jigs.  In the straights you don't need the broom stick extra heavy rod.  65# braid has less drag of you fish deep.

The 600 is a salmon reel, get a 700. And any broom stick will do.

In my opinion, the shorter the better.  I use 65 pound braid for both salmon and halibut, find any reel with a good drag.  It doesn't need to be fancy, especially when I only use it a couple days a year on a good year.  I have Penn 310 GTIs that I use for halibut and lings.  Any decent level wind that can hold enough line will work, straits and PS you won't be that deep.  Offshore is a different beast altogether.

tekota 700 / lamiglas big fish 7' rod 80lb braid for inside. Same rod with a tanacom 750 will fish anywhere the halibut are. I use my electric reel even when fishing shallow water it makes bait checks easier and when the dogfish are around you can actually keep fishing effectively.

Depends on price range..

Electric reel if you can afford it. Tanacom 750. Days are to short to hand crank 300-600' for bait check's.

If not. Penn 340 or Senator 113 will do. 65lb braid is plenty. 80 work's but it has allot of resistance down deep and isn't as sensitive to the bite .. I've pulled in fish up to 160lbs with 65lb power pro.

The rod needs some action for those soft bite days and to help work your jig. 5.5'-6' is a good range. Penn rampage, okuma cedros, etc..lots of options...
