I know this is not a fishing forum but here we go. We are from tri-cities but unfortunately stuck in Seattle childrens hospital for a while. My son is 13 and fighting a battle against leukemia. He had his bone marrow transplant the other day and all he can think about or talk about is getting back to fishing. I told him I might be able to pull the boat over and find some Kokanee but I am not going to be around all the time as I am trying to balance life between here, work and home. I would like to ask you guys for a few ideas on good areas to catch fish. Maybe a couple lakes that would produce trout and Kokanee. He is also really interested in fishing jetties and such for rock fish. PMs would be great and if someone has 2 open seats on there boat I can cover the fuel and what not. We are not going to be out of the hospital till the middle of June, so just trying to do some research in advance. Thanks. Blake

Just to let you know, Tacoma Sportsman's Club is having their annual kids fishing derby this Saturday. It's held at Bradley Lake in Puyallup's South Hill. Snacks, lunch, bait and rods are provided. This event is no charge and open to anyone.
-
I appreciate that but unfortunately he will not get out till around mid June
-
Give us a little time to come up with something and I bet we can make something happen. Lots of possibilities.
-
Does he like to fly fish?
-
Fortson Mill Pond in Darrington is kids only would be a nice drive in june to get away from Seattle. Easy access and it is well planted with nice trout. Twin Lakes in Smokey point is just off I-5 and a lot closer to Seattle, but kinda hit and miss with any fish it gets hit hard, plus the homeless hang out there quite a bit. Both of those are bank fishing, but if you want to boat fish there are several lakes in Snohomish county that would be great, and I am sure there are enough guys on here that would help get a kid fishing!
-
We have plenty of time to get info. He has never fly fished before and the majority of our fishing is walleye, bass, salmon and Kokanee.
-
Have you thought about a charter out of Westport?
.
Bottom fishing from "The Slammer" would make his day!
.
(Or any other boat)
-
A charter might be a possibility but we have to be really careful how many people he is around because the transplant completely wipes out his immune system. As a matter of fact his immunization record is wiped clean and he has to do them all again. I think our transplant team would prolly say no unless I could charter a boat with like 4 people.
-
So no boats?
-
Lake Stevens for perch etc......run put of everett with nice weather for flounder and misc c&r.
-
We’ve been known to do it up a little in situations like this. Just want to make sure what the boundaries are here before we get too carried away :chuckle:
The hunt wa crew will have him on a fully outfitted blue marlin trip if we’re not careful.
-
Hit me up if you're still around July 1st. Would have plenty of room for a few bodies, crabbing and flat fishing (sole, sanddabs and maybe some other strange looking creatures). Would be totally free, just show up in Everett with a cooler (or I could donate one). I have extra crab and fishing gear and tons of bait in the freezer.
-
So no boats?
Boats are fine, just not big charter boats with 20 people. Have to be careful not to expose him to too much.
-
Just to be clear here. I am in no way asking for a hand out and certainly don’t want it to come across that way. I just have no idea about fishing spots on this side of the state. I appreciate all the responses.

Definitely not taken that way by me. Let’s get you and the kid out fishing when the time comes.
-
To late! We be handing!
18 foot ctr console, RHBoat. I'm local to lake Stevens and we can hit the lake or head out of everett for flounder. All gear available and gas money not needed. Likely also see a whale or two out there.

Thanks for the kind offer. We will be in the hospital for another month or 2 and have to remain close to Seattle until around the first of September. He’s been here since January 27th and he/we are going stir crazy. This gives him something to look forward to and we will definitely be in touch.

I wish you guys could see the look on his face when I read these posts to him. He is so excited! This really perked him up. We will be in touch.
-
Hope to hear from you. Will process the crab and clean any fish right at the dock. If you need it vacuum sealed, frozen and stored, I will do that too. All you'll need is the proper licenses, I can help you with that as well.
-
AWESOME.
Hunt Wa comes thru again.
You've got offers form some great guys here.
-
I'll give all the props to H2O. He's a great guy.
-
I should be able to get him on a private trout pond in south King County. Lots of trout with some big ones. Plenty of flexibility with scheduling too.
-
You guys are so awesome. He had a pretty rough night last night but I know he will be watching fishing videos on YouTube today and looking forward to the day he can fish again.
-
Nobody on a charter boat is easy, we just book out the boat for you. Could be just you and your son and the boat crew. Im an east side so not much help logistically but I'll offer up the first $100 to make whatever needs done done.
As for not asking for handouts, you lost a say in that after you posted because thats what we do here sir :chuckle: let your boy know we are all in his corner. He is in the best place he could possibly be.
-
I'll match Karl's $100. I would love to help out.

Hit me up in Sept/Oct if you want to get him on some Salmon in Port Angeles.
-
Im down with another $100 to book out a charter for the two of you or to help pay fuel for a local taking yall out. For anything really. Just let me know where and when to get it out to yall.
Im on the east side as well, so no help logistically, but will help how I can.
-
I'd be in for another hundo...................Let me know.
-
If Karl is in for $100, then I am in for $101.
Let's get this young man in some fish.
-

I don't think anyone on here would call this a handout.
-
If a trip to the coast is possible I will gladly arrange a float with a good guide in Forks for you. Should be decent weather and some spring kings and summer coho around. Shoot me a p.m. and I'll make all the arrangements.
-
Tagging, once a plan starts coming together I am in for a $100 as well.
-
You guys are much too generous. I don’t even know what to say or how to thank you all. As things progress and we have a better idea of timelines, I will let you all know. I know once we are out of the hospital he has to be within 1 hour of Seattle until around mid July, by then his immune system will be kicking in a little and he will have a little more freedom.
-
My best bud is the guide for Puget Sound Sport Fishing out of Edmonds. June-August are really good times for puget sound coho. I'll keep an eye on this topic and reach out to see what he can offer.

That sounds like a blast. I will definitely stay in touch as we closer. Thanks
-
I'm in for another $100. As the official HW Secret Santa, I'll get a list of doners going.
-
Yes....this.
H20 is in for a boat ride and fishing. Also, a range trip with elk steaks and firepit after.
-
Count me in for a donation. Here's to a speedy recovery and tons of fish heading his way?
-
If he is Jonesing for bass, we can hook him up there too. I know several of us have full tournament set-ups. I have everything needed up in Snohomish County but can travel too. Several lakes to choose from. Decent shots at good size smallies and largies. You just show up and the rest is covered.
I would also throw in for the charter if that is the main plan.
-
You guys are all awesome.
-
Count me in if you need lodging for an overnight somewhere the night before or after a fishing trip. I'll cover 1 night.
Also, I live near Bremerton and would be glad to take him out this summer or fall for salmon. If he's not strong enough to get out this summer, let's plan a trip for next summer. We would be glad to host you for a couple days, put you guys up in an AirBnB, and cover your transportation costs and meals.
You and your wife (I'm assuming) are probably exhausted too and need a break. Let me know if you're able to get away for a night or two. I'd be glad to donate a couple nights at an airbnb to unwind and rest (even if it means later this fall when your little man is out of the hospital).

I'm in for a cash donation or could also take you guys out on my boat if H2O isn't available. I'll try to keep an eye on this thread, if somebody organizes something please PM me if I don't post.

I am wondering if it would be better to start ‘smaller’, depending on how he is doing? He may not have much stamina.
Maybe a pan fish outing to start with? Still working on getting my boat repaired or I would offer.
Lake Wa or Samamish would be a good fit distance and fishing quality.

This is kinda what I was thinking but I know hunt wa is go big or go home🤣🤣. The ocean should be fine more into late July or August but I just don’t know how fast he is going to bounce back. We will have to play it by ear. He really wants to be able to have his mom take him to a pier or jetty while I’m not here during the week. Anyone have some spots they would be willing to share?
Thank you guys so much for the support. He is so looking forward to the opportunities to meet and fish with all of you. It’s pretty much all he talked about yesterday.
-
Lake Wa has a fishing pier and parking close by. I see people catch fish there, so I know it can be done.

Magnuson Park is right next door to the hospital, and there is plenty of beach access just south of the launch ramp. I suspect he could also fish off the end of the launch ramp dock, it's not crowded right now. A worm under a bobber floated back towards the shore will catch perch and panfish. At the north end of the park is a dock and small pier at the sailing center (Sail Sand Point), which is inside the park. It's all public, and I suspect other people will be fishing there too. By mid-summer, these spots will get choked with milfoil, but it should be fine for the next six weeks or so.

So we can do a family fishing adventure on a private trout pond in south King County for the whole family. We can plan a day on your schedule. Accessible, easy, plenty of fish. I can pick you up and drop you back off if that helps. PM sent.

PM replied to.
I don’t know how I can possibly thank everyone enough for the offers and opportunities even if they don’t work out. This is helping to keep him positive when he is not feeling good. When he is doing good he is watching fishing videos on YouTube and he even got a Bassmaster fishing game for his Xbox to help occupy him. Thank you all.

We'll get him "hooked" up.

Let’s give this another go.

Let’s give this another go.
Just a quick update on Karson. So last Tuesday night I get a call at work that he was moved to ICU because of rapid liver failure and kidney failure called VOD, caused by the conditioning chemo and that me and my daughter need to come right away as things are not looking good. They sedated him, put him on the breathing machine, started dialysis and some meds to get this under control. Long story short, the doctors said his chances are slim but he is starting to make a comeback and the doctors are amazed. His liver is regenerating and his sisters cells are engrafted and doing their work. Things are slowly coming around and we are hopeful that he will fully recover. This is a very short update but figured I would share. Thank you guys for your generous offers. I believe they are helping to keep him fighting.
-
Thank you for the update.
We are pulling for him.
Praying for him, you and your family.

We appreciate it. We are just taking things one day at a time. I will try to update a little later this week.

I live in SW Washington so I’m little help for locations near you guys but I’m down to donate for whatever is decided. Keep your heads up and thoughts positive! Kids are darn tough! Best wishes for a full recovery!

We appreciate the status updates Blake but DO NOT feel obligated to do so. You've got a lot more important things to worry about. I can't even imagine how scary an ICU visit like that must have been. Makes my heart ache. Chins up and keep stepping.
-
Praying for a speedy recovery. I can't imagine what you guys are going through. We are all pulling for him!

ANYTHING!

Sorry it’s been so long but here is a little Karson update. We are still in ICU but the dialysis is the only thing holding him on here. He was able to eat his first chicken noodle soup last night and they are beginning weaning him of dialysis. He got a 10 out break from the machine and his kidneys handled it fine. His liver is kicking butt and they are no longer concerned with it as it is functioning normally. Things are looking good and on track to get out of ICU soon and hopefully out of the hospital around the same time. They did a bone marrow biopsy earlier this week and the graft was a success!! His cells are 100% his sisters. They told him if he robs a bank to be sure and leave some blood at the scene🤣. He is super strong kid and is now back to walking the halls and messing with the nurses. Thank you all for your prayers and we can’t wait to be able to meet up with you guys.
-
Good news! Thanks for the update!
-
Awesome news. Praying for continued recovery!

Fantastic news!

Yaaasssss!!
Great news.
-
Praise the Lord! This is great news!

Another quick update. Karson was kicked out of the ICU on Saturday. :IBCOOL:. He no longer needs dialysis and I think they are pulling his feeding tube today because he is eating like a horse and it is no longer needed. His kidney and bone marrow biopsy came back clean and they are planning on discharging him by the 9th and possibly as soon as this Thursday. He is super excited to get out and be able to have a bit of normalcy. Bring on the fishing! I will be in contact with you fellas who have offered to help and see if we can work around your schedule and his appointments. He has to be extra cautious so he will have to wear gloves and a mask to prevent exposure to bacteria in the water and fish, dirt etc…
We look forward to meeting everyone. I know things may not work out with him being in the hospital longer than expected and everyone’s busy schedule but we will give it a shot. Thanks
Blake

Fantastic news! Congratulations Karson!!!!! :IBCOOL:

That is excellent news! Glad to hear he is doing much better and things are going in a good direction.

If you guys happen to be in SW WA between now and 9/10 or after 9/22 I'll be spending a lot of time (mostly weekends) on the Columbia out of Kalama or down at Astoria/buoy 10 chasing kings and silvers and have room for 2 on my 18' boat. I have all the gear, all you need is a lunch and a license. Not currently a guide but have 22 years guiding experience.
9/10-22 I'll be chasing elk. :archery_smiley:
-
Thanks for the offer but I don’t think we can make it that far away right now. The wife and I have training on the do’s, dont’s and cants. That will tell us more on what he is able to do. Sounds like fishing is fine. He can’t gut them or handle them without nitrile gloves.
On a side note. He is officially getting released from the hospital tomorrow. We are super excited and nervous at the same time. Hoping to get him fishing this weekend while I am up there.
I did find out that we have to stay within 30 minutes of childrens hospital for the time being which makes this a little more challenging. I will let you guys know when that relaxes a little.

Does anyone have a guide they would recommend for bass fishing around Lake Washington, Samammish or Stevens area. My boy has been fishing every day from fishing docks and having fun but I would like to get him on some bigger fish. Or if you have room in your boat I will cover the fuel.

Found this guide service for Lake Washington: https://365charters.com/fishing/rates-trips/bass-fishing/
Unfortunately, my summer has slipped by and I've booked up every moment available for hosting people on the boat. But, here's what I'll do. See if you can book a guided trip with your boy there in the region and I'll cover $200 of the cost. Sound good? Once you've gone on the trip, just send me a PM and I'll Venmo you some cash.
I know a bunch of guys on here, including myself, have offered to help. Now that your boy is out of the hospital, it's time for us to step up. So, I'll start with $200.
Who else is willing to help?

I just want to give a huge shout out to some members on here who helped out my boy and got him on some awesome fish. Also some things other than fishing. I promised not to mention names. Thank you guys so much!! It was so awesome to meet you all. You really made a huge impact in our lives and memories we will never forget.

Awesome!!!

Love this! Stay healthy and on track for a full-recovery! We're praying for you guys!!!

This is so cool. Congrats to your son on a gorgeous fish and praying for his ongoing recovery.

Hey guys. I am so sorry that I have fallen off the face of the earth. Karson is doing absolutely fantastic and the doctors are still amazed at every appointment at how well he is doing. We just celebrated his one year from bone marrow transplant day on the 13th which is a big milestone and his last treatment will be next week 🎉. We are so grateful for the opportunities that Karson has had to do what he loves even with his limitations. I cannot thank the hunt wa crew enough for keeping his hopes alive and his spirit up. You guys have truly made a difference in his life and our Family. I will try to post some update pics when I get some better internet service.

Great to hear!

Fantastic news!

Great news. Let’s get him on the water soon.

Sent you a pm. I’ve got a pile of trout type gear I’ll probably never use and I feel like it’s got his name on it. Can never have too much fishing gear.

Great news. Thanks for the update.
I hope he continues on this path and makes many more memories in the field.

I will say this kid has been dang lucky with fish ever since he got out of the hospital. This was his first week home. A nice 31” walleye and he finally got to shoot his new shotgun.
-
A 9lb walleye and 15lb triploid in late September.
-
An 18lb German brown and a 22” Kokanee. I almost lost both these fish with a poor net job :bash:
-
He was able to go on his first ever duck hunt and used his dog. This was a youth hunt so just him and a friend doing the shooting. He got a nice pintail and some nice mallards. I think he used 3 boxes of shells🤣🤣🤣. The Turkey is from this season. It is crazy to look at the changes as they get him off the meds.
-
Last but not least is Karson with his his life saving Sister. Praise the lord for a perfect match for the bone marrow transplant. I don’t know if I will ever be able to repay the kindness from our friends, family and the complete strangers who have reached out to us on this forum. Thank you all so much. I’m sorry I didn’t get these posted sooner and keep you guys updated but I had no idea how busy life would be at home trying to juggle work with his appointments and treatments and trying to get him out as much as his body would allow us.
-
Amazing change off the meds! He’s having more fun and success than I am being retired. Great job young man.
-
Fan frikkin tastic. Thanks for sharing the pics.
-
SO AWESOME!!!!!
Thank you for sharing.

Man! Kid is a fish catching machine! Way to go!

Thanks for sharing more photos.

From an anonymous friend of Karson:
First I will start this post with a message. Warriors come in many forms and Karson is undoubtedly in this category. It was an absolute honor to share the woods and water with Karson and family. Karson is an extremely well mannered and well mentored outdoorsman. I will do my best to take those interested on a small journey that several of us were very blessed to have shared with Karson and family.
This is a summary of several trips condensed but what would be classified as a fishing and hunting vs catching and harvesting. Add to this an extreme dose of tough beyond any reasonable expectations. This kid is a stud and has an amazing family support system.
We will start with the fishing which not to be a spoiler, but it ended without a salmon boated. The fishing was sandwiched into one of the hunting trips. It was a memory maker on one of the most scenic stretches of wild water there is. I truly believe outdoor therapy is both physical and spiritual. This trip was great with silvers jumping throughout but they seemed to have lockjaw to our best offerings. As we navigated the rugged portions of the river our sled pilot showed tremendous expertise. Karson and his dad's eyes were quite large as we passed river rock covered by mere inches of water at 30 plus mph with ease; if you have not experienced this it's quite a rush and seldom "normal". In our adventure we did hook a huge native king with magnificent color but after Karson's epic battle, the net guy (me) managed to turn a fish into a fish story with one poorly placed net attempt. Frustrating but memorable...
Now to the hunt.
We were constricted by several factors but one of the goals was to hear bugling bulls. Working around elk movements, work schedules, medical appointments and several hundred miles of separation we developed a loose plan to attempt.
Trip one- Blinds were placed and elk were in the area however they seemed to go quiet for the first evening. Just as darkness descended, we were able to catch a glimpse of a couple cows and what we think was a spike and smaller raghorn. Morning came and the elk were already in transit to their bedding area with many elk sounds but no aggressive bugling. During the day Karson was catching up on school work, home life and trying to get some rest. The evening came with the first confirmation of bugling bulls. The elk showed just before dark with several bulls that would have been in serious trouble if they were to cross the property line that we needed. Instead they decided to torment us with various displays. The next day was a rinse, repeat with lots of action but no opportunity. We all agreed that hunts happen the way they happen and were very encouraged.
Trip two, this is where scouting is supposed to pay off and all stars seemed to begin to align. I watched several bulls along with many cows exactly where we needed them. I made the call and trip two was underway. The plan was to get into position early and hope for the best. We actually had called in reinforcements due to an abundance of confidence.
I felt like this was the day! We got there early very near where I had put the herd to bed the night before. And........ nothing, and I mean nothing! We scouted a couple different areas and things did not look optimal. Not to belabor the details and accepting that things happen for reasons we agreed that there was a low likelihood of success. With this development the hunt was postponed.
Trip three-
Trip three started with a lot of confidence as elk were scattered throughout the area we were in. We started out amongst a chorus of bugling bulls! I with great confidence decided to move ahead to assess the situation. With a final rise between us and paydirt I approached with great caution only to be busted by a branch bull on the same rise I was on. Now with several minutes before shooting light and elk ahead of us as well as behind us my heart was sinking as we all realized that we (I) had been busted. Although the next hunts continued to provide plenty of bugles, the stars didn't align. At this point there was acknowledgment that it was not if but when this young man would find success. Karson and dad made the long trip home with many memories made. Optimism and determination are an understatement at this point.
Trip four-
This summary will be unapologetically short! Karson arrived fresh off of a medical treatment earlier in the day. It was mid afternoon and we decided to scout a little in preparation for the evening. We went over the same rise where I was so unceremoniously busted earlier and instantly spotted antlers! We dropped back and drew up a quick plan. We moved into position with stealth. We looked and there were two big bulls. Karson sized them up and settled in on the larger of the two. A couple of shots rang out with the speed of a semi auto (Karson shoots a bolt gun) and the elk disappeared into the thick brush. There were a few tense moments of uncertainty as we did not locate blood right away. A short tracking job later Karson approached the downed bull from behind however a finishing shot was not needed as his initial shot devastated the vitals providing a quick end.
In closing I will extend a sincere thank you to Karson and family for allowing me to share the journey with them. Karson is the type of young man that has limitless potential and has already changed the world and will continue to do so.
Friend of Karson.
