Anyone else do any Hali and bottom fish out of Westport? I broke in the new boat and made two trips for Hali and got our limits each day. After our Hali we went after seabass and Lings. Got the seabass limits pretty easy but could not get any quality Lings, and only caught one keeper. What a blast.
-
Been calling off all the trips because of the crappy ocean condition forecasts. How has it really been?
-
I went the last two Thursdays. This last one was lumpy for sure. Not ideal but we got our fish. I think it was about five feet at 8 seconds. Felt like 8 feet at five seconds.
-
The big lings are where you were halibut fishing. And the rock fishing out there is awesome as well. Just drive around until you see a big suspended school of rock fish and load the boat.
-
I've caught lings off the jetty fishing the inlet side. They weren't monsters but they eat good.
-
I've only halibut/ling fished Westport once, last year, and the area we fished was definitely not a secret spot, 30-40 boats around us. I think it took us longer to run out and back then it did to catch our limit of butts and lings, the lings were decent, 15-25lbs., released a few before getting our last halibut.

Our last trip for Halibut out of Westport (in May) was during the time of day when the Tide was at it's lowest, fighting headwinds we headed into 20 foot swells as we crossed the Bar.
We were in a 36 Foot Charter Boat with a seasoned Skipper who said that in his Thirty years out on the water, this was about as bad as he had seen it. Half way out the Coast Guard heading in came alongside and asked if we were a Charter? When the Skipper said "Yes", they allowed us to proceed, shouting "Good Luck to you!"
When we arrived at the Fishing Grounds, only three of us out of the group were in any shape to go Fishing as everyone else was "Chumming". :sry:
What a time we had, catching Limits for everyone else.
The best part of the trip was back Dockside, when everyone finally "came to again" and got their Sea legs under them. With sore arms we handed them their bags of Halibut saying here's your Limit! They looked cross-eyed at us and asked "When did we catch these?" :chuckle:

Me and a buddy had a trip like that for rockfish/ling. There was maybe 12 people on the boat and it was nasty. Him and I were the only ones fishing and that was still when you could get 10 rockfish and 2 lings. And both of us were guzzling beer the whole time, much to the chagrin of our mates. Between him and I, we caught nearly the entire boat's limits. A couple guys would give it a go for a bit, then hurl and go back into the cabin. That was a great day for America.
-
I am planning my next trip in the next week or so. Might switch it up and hit Neah instead for salmon, Hali, lings, and rockfish. Little two day trip will hopefully put a nice dent in the freezer.
-
what size boat do you guys run over there? wondering if my 206 Northwest would be safe for running out there
-
It's not all about the size of the boat. It's about knowledge of the ocean..
Your boat is fine IF...you watch the weather, the swell's, the tides and the currents. Westport bar is no joke...I've taken 10-12' stuff over the boat on a good forecast day.

This was a large sport fishing boat back in the day.
-
My boat is 21 plus five feet for off shore bracket and motor. Does fine.
-
Did anyone cross the bar today? (Thurs 6/16?) I'm supposed to go on Sunday but was wondering about the bar with these crazy tides right now. Thanks!

Check out the Westport LiveWeb cam and it may give you an idea of what to expect.

Copy that, will do. Thanks!

Dad and 4 guys went out of Westport today with a 24ft Seasport. He said not the best seas but they caught fish just watch the tides when crossing and you'll be fine. We are supposed to go out saturday but not sure if we will be going or not.
-
That’s nothing. Wait till your in seas that the boat in front of you disappeared. That’s when you get nervous

If you fish the ocean a bunch like I do save this link and check it often. Or just use it so see what your getting into.

Went out today, whole boat caught limits of halibut and rock fish. Was alittle windy late morning.
-
Thanks for the reports and info! I normally fish PA or Neah Bay but no boat for that anymore. Got a chance to get on a buddy's 23' GW w/ob & twins. Good luck and be safe out there if you are headed out!

Any larger halibuts or all chickens? Sounds like you had a good trip

Yes the trip was good avg 20lbs biggest one on the boat was 38lb. I was at the dock watching some of the other boats off load and they had really small ones.

Sweet!
