I am somewhat in the travel trailer market meaning that if a good deal pops up I would probably snag it. My question is what route would you guys go give the following parameters?
Intended use would be summer trips and hunting camp
Number of people to sleep would be 2-4 given I would like to be able to have hunting buddies stay in it and not share a rack
It would be pulled with my 2013 f-150 ecoboost
Budget would be preferably under $20k but would go a little higher for the perfect set up
Also would like it to be as efficient as possible for power usage, water etc

I snagged a 2020 Winnebago Minnie Winnie 24 ft
Queen and bunks ,slide out
27k last summer
Pulling it with a tundra WD hitch and air bags
Plenty of room
Pulls easy stops fine
With a 1/2 ton I wouldn’t go over 24ft for a tow behind

Not sure if you could find one of these in your price range, but my buddy has a bigger version and if I ever do buy one, I think i'll get one of these. Buddy's is awesome and it's 30' or so. It's a few years old and for sale for a little over $30k, so maybe the smaller ones are around your price range.

The large rear bunks are the ticket for me and my larger than average family members. My kid would have to fold herself in half to sleep on a fold down table.
All LED lighting and TV(which probably wouldn't get used much). Efficient HVAC, insulation, etc.

I also like the bunk idea for the additional sleeping space. When its just my old man and I on a hunt, sharing the queen bed in our sleeping bags is no biggie but a buddy is a different story.

My trailer is 9600lbs fully loaded drives super nice. 26' but I gave up sleeping space for a good bathroom. Mine sleeps 6 if you 5' the queen master bedroom is the only place I sleep. Lots of ultralights out there but at 20k is going to be tough to find. 25k-30k is more like it. I have been looking some. New forget it 45k plus.

I think its rated to pull around 10k but I would like to keep it much lighter than that. I don't need a brand new trailer with all the bells and whistles. Just something comfortable and that I can get in and out of the hills with relative ease

Mine is 20' and we chose the queen bed and fold down table/bunk plus a larger slideout. However, there was a different layout that had 2 bunks, fold down table/bed and a queen size. Would sleep 4 or maybe 5 if 2 are spooning. Mine is 3800 lbs dry weight. $20K 5 years ago new.

Go to Outdoorsy and find a couple you might like and rent them for the weekend. You can try a few
Out and see what you like and don’t like plus it’ll get you out of town for a bit.

No way i want to share a TT with 3 other dudes, no matter how big it is.
Van, i dont care if Ford wants to call it Massive Boost, i aint pulling more then a 24 footer with a half ton....and that makes me cringe

I bought a momentum earlier this year and we are having lots of issues. With the new pressurized water tanks they are notorious for losing water driving down the road, we lose half a tank on our first trip. Grand Design told us to fill the tank up when we get where we are going for a solution. The roof had gaps in the sealer, the glass broke out of a cabinet door, the automatic vent won’t open in the bathroom and to top that when they installed the door you could see daylight between the door and trim.
I’m spending a lot of time navigating the warranty process instead of enjoying camping. Very little quality in manufacturing these days despite the extraordinary high prices.

Selling mine in a week. 26ft (29 with tongue). Good condition, camps my family of 5 just fine. Happy to throw in all the fixings. 10 years old, we are the second owner from what I remember. Well within your price range.
My wife started a business so we just won’t have time to use it.

I agree about putting other guys in there but the half ton thing is way wrong.
I took my 26ft to Yellowstone two years ago with zero issues. I’m loaded up with a great tow vehicle, transmission cooler, good tires and brakes, etc but it can absolutely be done.
I’ll go a step further and tell you I towed the same trailer with my dads 2000 Cummins 3/4 ton and it towed way rougher. I did some research and found my tow capacity is actually 3000lbs greater than his.

I talked to a guy the other day towing a 29’ airstream with an F150. Says it’s a breeze. I think it’s a ton of trailer for an F150 but I’m not the guy behind the wheel. The trailer is within the tow capacity of the truck, so ….

I have a wolf pack 2021 model 24 gold 14 , it’s a toy hauler huge front bedroom very spacious front bedroom lots of cargo drop down bunk in rear family of 4 been great although 12v fridge is a joke other than that happy and I like to pack everything paid 23k for it and I’ll add to the momentum comments above my dad the moose master on here has one had several problems ,

Why is everyone caught up on 1500 vs 2500 when the quality of truck has advanced so much in the last two decades? I’m not a motor head but it just doesn’t make sense to me.

For context.
We were towing our 1995 20 foot Nash TT with a 95 F-250, didnt sway at all. Couldn't feel it at all except for the ford being gutless power wise.
I started towing that same nash with an 08 Chevy 1500 with a 5.3 engine and my wife could FEEL the sway. She gets a bit nervous when the back end pulls down a bit, it feels like the truck wants to pull a wee bit this way and that. Doesnt bother me, but the wife is a woman, and she gets nervous. The tranny wanted to get hot too till i installed a tranny cooler in addition to the factory one that came with it.
Hey,... maybe a ford half ton tows a heavier load less noticeably then a chevy :dunno:

I am not sayong a 1/2 ton in any manufacture won't tow a trailer but there are soany different packages in one manufacture of 1/2 ton. Do you have the heavy tow package or just a regular tow package with those different packages come different break or suspension setups. I had a 2008 F150 with the 5.4 Triton engine highest tow package towing same trailer I talked about 6 years ago. Within tow limits of the truck. Pull just fine if you where on flat land. Big hils or mountains gutless. Went to a Ram 2500 with the 2013 5.7 Hemi about 6 months of having the trailer.. What a difference then a 2018 2500 woth a 6.4 hemi pulls like a champ. Crappy gas mileage but it is like it isn't even there. Pulled it up to the Dalles FS campground over the 4th. I can tell you that travel trailers have gone up in price just like everything else lately even used ones. I drive cautious with my trailers I amnot like everone else towing that goes 90 mph down the interstate. That is just asking for problems and by the way the law is when you are towing a trailer your legal highway speeds are that of a semi. Over the last 5 years I have towed my trailer to fires just about eveywhere. Taking down to Fort Rock in Oregon in a couple weeks. Jiat know your tow capacity of your vehicle and use the 80% rule. Tow 80% of your tow capacity. Also know your max weight of the trailer you are towing. Most max weights are with full tanks. I don't fill up any tanks full whe I am towing unless it is a short trip like over the 4th. I usually will fill up the fresh water when I am close to my destination.

A newer half ton truck tows better than a 15 year old half ton truck.

It's not how much you can tow that should be the question. It's whether or not you can stop. We go over the North Cascades Hiway 4-5 times every year. Twice we have seen camping trailers on their roof, and the tow vehicle on its side. Both were 1/2 ton trucks, towing a trailer that was probably within the maximum capacity for the vehicle as far as towing, but the brakes just were not up the task. A white-knuckle ride down the eastern side of the North Cascades Hiway ain't worth it !!!!!

If the trailer is within the tow capacity of the truck, the truck is designed to stop the trailer also.
That won’t stop people who don’t know how to tow a trailer from towing trailers. It also won’t stop people from buying 10k pound trailers when they have a 10k point tow rating. It also won’t stop some clown from pushing the limits and running 45mph corners at 55mph with a load pushing the limits of their trucks.

When I tow in my 16 F-150 I hardly use the truck brakes. Between the trailer brakes and pre-programmed engine compression braking it does automatically when you have it in tow mode it pretty much stops itself. That's 7 year old technology already, I wouldn't be surprised if newer ones were even better. I push the pedal much harder when nothing is connected.

I would much prefer a trailer on the lighter side to make those longer trips more economical but also don't want to buy a trailer so small that it makes it so I might as well just pitch a tent. Trying to find that happy medium between big enough trailer to be comfortable and small/light enough to be able to haul it all over with ease. Pretty much a unicorn

One suggestion I would offer is to consider a trailer that has two doors. Sounds like a small thing, but when you have 3-4 people in a medium (25') trailer, having two doors makes a big difference. The first two camping trailers we owned were 1-door models. Our current 25' trailer is a 2-door model, and it just makes things way more convenient.

There are lots of ultra lites out there that would fit your bill for sure. Prices are high right now for sure. Quality has also gone to crap on alot of newer models over the last couple years from what I am hearing.

We bought a Forest River 25' Cruise Lite three months before Covid hit. Same basic trailer is now selling for about 20K more than what we paid for it. Insanity!!! None the less it weighs in at 4600# dry and unloaded. No slide outs but larger than normal bunks in the back. We have really enjoyed it so far. Good luck :tup: I pull it with a 2014 RAM 1500 Hemi, no problem. I also got the leveling package and sway bar set up which makes a huge difference as well as a Prodigy P2 electric break module. All help with the peace of mind factor...and no I don't blow down the highway doing 75...I hang in the right lane and do 60 most of the time. I prefer back roads but that isn't always possible.
You will find something that works for you ,

Update. I ended up finding an older trailer here in Wenatchee that fit the bill. 2013, 23 feet, one tip out, Solar set up and 3880 dry weight. Looking forward to getting it out in the hills.

I went back and forth about spending more to get a newer trailer with more features but went this route for a few reasons. This is my first trailer to personally own so I viewed this similar to a "starter home". Also, I wanted something that I wouldn't be as afraid to bring on some of those less desirable mountain roads and get dirty, maybe a few little bumps and bruises etc.

Looks good to me. That dry weight should work fine with your pickup.
I share your feelings of not wanting to mess up a new expensive travel trailer on rough roads, hitting low hanging branches etc. If its got a few scratches and stains thats cool, as long as it is functional, comfortable and reliable.

Oh my, I think we bought our trailers around the same time, NO WAY I could do that to mine, I'd puke. My truck is trashed from my moose hunt but my trailer gets washed every time I bring it home after camping. But hey, to each their own.

What level are you guys with your pickups? I say dings and scratches within reason are fine IN the pickup bed. Its a pickup, your supposed to use it to haul stuff.
I saw a guy at scrap metal with a pristine pickup, lining his pickup bed with beach towels before he loaded metal in the back.
I'm not a fan of plastic bed liners, everything slides around too easy.

Oh my, I think we bought our trailers around the same time, NO WAY I could do that to mine, I'd puke. My truck is trashed from my moose hunt but my trailer gets washed every time I bring it home after camping. But hey, to each their own.

We use it dang near every weekend between March and October. The amount of adventures and memories it is making with my 4 and 6 year old trump those scratches. We all hate people, especially camping close to others, so we are constantly as far off the path as possible.
