Question,
The wife and I are young, and she wants to hunt other states as bad as me.
Shy of picking up a book, and figuring out which unit gets the most apps, and hopping its for a reason, I am clueless.
I think our goal would be to build points, and hold out for a great hunt, rather than just hunt another mediocur unit in another state for a bunch more $$
Now I know some are gonna say get the regs. I know this, but am looking for some personal experiance on how y'all figured it out, got the know how etc..
I dont think anything would Pi$$ me off more than burning money on a tag equivalent to something like coweeman/winston.
Any hand me down knowledge and or free advice would be appreciated.
Thanks
WB

Have you heard of the huntin' fool magazine? Full of all the western states, top units, draw odds, prices, application deadlines etc... It is kind of pricey at 100$ a year but it is worth every penny, the eastman's magizine is also pretty good resource if you subscribe. They have the mrs section in the back that is pretty useful too.

So you want tags that allow you to hunt "out of season?" :dunno:
-
Bobcat,
kind of confused on your reply.
My wife wants a masher bull elk/moose (Dont we all), and I just like archery as a whole, and dont mind a medium sized critter on up. Score never crossed my mind as it is nothing i'm concerned with. I just like big trashy critters, and we want to increse the odds by hunting other states. We just dont know how to go about it.
Coldsteel,
Thanks, I will be all over that next yr.

I would start by subscribing to eastman's and the huntin fool. Then next year I would start buying points in all the states you can afford.

Bobcat,

I was confused on the title of your post... (Out of season tags) ???
-
I'm thinking "out of state tags" was the intended title...oops.
i have been reading and learning from these type forums for the last couple years and have a good idea where to put in for tags for mediocre quality hunts, some of which are guaranteed tags. i don't have the coveted tags figured out but don't really have any desire to try for those either.

Get the Huntin Fool and save your time trying to piece things together off the forums.

I think he meant "out of STATE tags"

Have you tried

Wild Bill,
I concur with a few of the guys, Huntin' Fool is the way to go. It started as a small time magazine, came once every three months, if I remember correctly, and now it's a full blown big-time magazine. The Carters are very helpful and insightful...and also very nice. The've got a good outfit, I'd use 'em if I could afford it.

Yep,
I meant out of state tags. Sorry about that!
Figured I better take the wife for all she's willing, before any pups come along! (noticed they seem to change the agenda!)
This huntin fool thing sounds sweet. I think I may only be able to afford one or two states right now, but with my job runnin my next few yrs, it will be a points builing thing only anyways!

Montana is a good starting point, antelope is due June 1st if you want to apply.
-
You will definately want to get in for Wyoming's points this summer, elk, deer and antelope, if you feel real lucky you can submit for bison as well! You have till June 1st to get in for points in Oregon, decent muley hunting and better blacktails, good elk to, like anything else your success has a direct bearing on your scouting!

Anyone interested in signing up for the huntin fool PM me, im a member, and i love the magazine... plus they got a fathersday memebership drive where you get raffle tickets for 20 different guided hunts, and i think some knifes and stuff, $100 a year, but deff worth it if you plan on doing the out of state thing

A fellow never knows about those draws either... A few years ago I was drawn the first time I put in for a Wyoming elk tag. That was a great hunt and worked out real well for me:

Subsequent attempts to draw again ended up w/nothing for elk, but in '07 I was drawn for a mule deer hunt and took a young 4x4 buck. Well worth spending a little time doing some research and putting in for out-of-state tags. A DIY hunt isn't a budget buster either. Am hoping for a return to Wyoming this year too.
