Title: Heading back for Round 3
Post by: MuleyontheWall on May 22, 2009, 06:15:40 AM
Krystal(Muleysgirl13) and I are leaving this afternoon for Colville to give these birds another shot.

I'll do my best to make a couple posts a day to let you guys know how the hunting is in that area and hopefully post some pictures of a bird or two! We'll be staying at the fairgrounds this evening and then after that Im not real sure.

We are in a white and blue F-250 if you see us give two blows of the horn.

Muley,

I wish you and the Mrs the best of luck. Was going to get over there myself this weekend but with the baby teething I think I am just going to hunker down and enjoy the day the best I can...

These updates from the hunt are so cool. Sounds like a great time I have never even seen a Moose that must of been something, I was suppose to go to Colville this weekend turkey hunting but my hunting partner bailed and I was not going to drive 6 hours by my self so I am really enjoying these updates from the Field.

On day three we headed back to where i battled the birds the day before for four hours and after a sleepless night thinking about him I wanted another shot at it, So we got to the spot around 4am and started the hike into our spot. Right as krystal and i get setup he starts sounding off up ontop of a different hill this time...maybe about 700 yards away, wide open meadow with a hill in the middle of it with about 15 tall trees...after about 6 gobbles he shuts up and i give him a soft pur...cuts me off half way and gives me about 3 more gobbles..At that point I am already seeing this guy over my shoulder and as soon as i think that he heads the other way, gobbling his head off...heading the total other way, at this point Im a little down but thought about the one hour thread that was on here and figure why not hang out, I've got nothing better to do, so we sit there for a little while and BS, maybe 30 minutes go by..and he sounds off maybe 100 yards away coming right at us. YEAH! Im fired up and here we go again, game on. Same thing this time, hangs up at about 70 yards and doesnt want to come any closer..the day before i called walking away and he came in to about 40 yards for .2 seconds but never showed himself and krystal wasnt able to get a shot off so I thought today maybe I'd go side to side today...he stayed right infront of me wherever I went, I could walk 100 yards, I'd hit the call and he would be right infront of me, 70 yards out..we did this for about 7 to 800 yards maybe..and the whole time he is gobbling every 20 to 30 seconds...and this is where it goes bad...all his gobbling got to some other hens...to my right about 50 yards away 2 hens at a quick walk are heading right for him...needless to say....about a minute later....no more gobbles...

So I head back to where we were set up in the first place and get her, let her know what happened and we walked about half way down to where the hens were and stand there just talked about that hunt and how much fun we were having and what not..and about the time we we're going to walk out, a bird gobbles back where we we're set up in the first place, I call to him and nothing...we wait, about 15 minutes later another gobble in the same area...call and nothing...waited about 90 minutes and no gobbles or seeing birds so we pulled out....wish I'd have left her set up in the first spot.. :bash:

All in all we had a great time, lots of laughs and gobbling....what more could you want in a turkey hunt? except maybe a big bird down.... :chuckle:

MuleyontheWall- that is exactly what happens with late season birds. By this time they have played the game the whole season. What you did was right tho. stick with it and dont give up, late season birds are hard but are still killable. good luck man

Thanks to everyone for the good wishes  :yeah: what muley said.  We had an awesome time and I was  SURE I was going to get a shot on him both mornings but he was just too shy...or too smart.  But we had a blast and enjoyed the company of the entire population of WA on the way there and on the way back in traffic.  We BS-ed with a bunch of partiers on the way over.... and teased and harrassed some pissed off hungover people on the way home.  Zach even played catch with some people in the car next to us.  All in all a great trip
