How did people do this season in the general season MODERN FIREARM elk season and cow permit in GMU 346??? I used to hunt GMU346 years back b4 I went to archery

Post by: tankcdr66 on November 21, 2022, 08:19:56 AM: Elk season along with deer season sucked! The forest service ripped a large portion of the roads out in the name of reducing fire dangers. Total BS! A few years ago, there was a lightning caused fire near where we hunt/camp; the area had been thinned in the 1950-1960s and the fire was not very hot and burned brush and some of the smaller trees in the area. The study that the FS posted on their web site also cited the cost of road maintenance as a factor in ripping out the roads. I have been hunting the same area since the mid 80s and have never seen the FS doing any work on the roads, ever! The campers/sportsmen keep the roads cleared of down falls during the summer/fall. By ripping out the coverts and roads, and cutting trees down to block the roads, sportsmen cannot even walk the roads to get to their hunting areas. Sad state of affairs that will negatively impact sportsmen who camp and hunt in the area, thus less tag sales and fewer hunters spending money in the local communities and supporting wildlife enhancement. During both seasons, only observed a few does and cows as well as a bunch of pissed off old timers who had previously hunted the area for the last 40 plus years.

The old "powerline" that ran through there all the way up to Raven's Roost is now pretty much impassable and hard to find in the large thinned out clearcuts.

The 1921 has huge berms on it now making it really hard to get trailers in and out without damaging your rig. Didn't get over to Fife's Ridge this past year, so can't report on that.

This last year we were camped along the 1902 just below the sand creek campground when a windstorm came through and bringing down some huge trees across the road. So we spent one evening from 1am until the sun came up clearing the road with chainsaws and trucks with tow straps. 2 of the trees were massive and took us quite some time to get through.

I believe last year in rifle around 60 animals were taken and success was near 5%. I don't know what roads have been ripped out, in all my time covering ground there I haven't observed the removal of roads.
Regarding Fifes ridge, I hunt muleys there, access is still availible from. 1922. Last year I saw a ton of cougar sign, even had fresh tracks that followed my AM hike out. Don't pass elk to find elk, I don't see them often at the higher elevations.

Post by: tankcdr66 on July 29, 2023, 12:24:23 PM: They took out the 750 and 1904 road networks. Gilli humped, trees across the roads and the culverts removed along with ripping the roadbeds out.
During the green dot era, you could walk the closed roads, now it appears that the FS is attempting to remove access to the area. The roads are hardly trafficable by foot and if they get another lightning fire in the area as happened three years ago, it will cost them in time and big $$ to rebuild the roads. It is a sad state of affairs.
