Title: First timer help
Post by: Buck_stalker on May 24, 2009, 05:19:21 PM
I want to go duck hunting this upcoming season, and I have a few questions for you well knowledged people.  What choke should I use?  What size shot? and I have two barrels, which one would work better, the shorter one or the longer one?

Buck,
First you need to figure out a lot of variables first. What kind of ducks, over decoys or not,and etc. I hunt mainly sea ducks over decoys so I shoot modified choke w/ 3" # 3's.Feel free to send pms with your questions.

Like Washingtonmuley said once you've decided your style of hunting you can match you gear to it.  I hunt puddlers over decoys and like to get them in close and my favorites are 22" single barrelled gunsand 26" barrelled SxS's in 12 or 20 shooting 4's early in the season and 3's later.  This season I'll be starting out with steel 5's in my 20.

I'd say that for a starter go with a 26 or 28" barrel with an IC and 3's or 4's over decoys, for pass shooting put in a Mod and 3's or 2's.  You might want to pick up some steel #7 target loads and shoot a few rounds of SKEET (not trap) to get the feel for shooting crossing, quartering and incoming birds.
