Title: Elk Killing Machines!
Post by: Hornseeker on May 28, 2009, 08:20:00 AM
Who are they? I am not one...I have killed some bulls, killed some cows... passed quite a few up when i thought I was a trophy hunter... but am NOT an elk killing machine!!

Who do you know (or if its yourself) that have flat put the hurts on the elk population? These guys amaze me..and if you keep a marriage and family together and still do it...thats even more impressive! Lets here the numbers!

I have several friends/acquaintences that have killed 25-40 elk... one guy has killed 34 with a bow and many others with his rifle before he switched over... several years of his life he killed 3 bulls in a year, hunting Utah, Wyoming and Colorado...

I recently heard about a guy in Colorado that has killed 45 bulls and 7 of them are over 350 AND they were all with a recurve....

I also have a friend or two that kill 310-360 bulls every year... they are younger guys that have only been elk hunting for 10-15 years...when they are 60.... they will have some dam impressive numbers stacking up!!!!!

Not a contest...just curious if you've heard any crazy numbers!!!

I do know one for sure, killed 12 bulls 350 or better on public land with his bow. Learned alot from him. Has an ungodly stack of 300 class (rag bulls) as he puts it. Wish I was an elk killing machine like that. Hes got video of 340 class bulls he passed up.

I know two guys who are flat killing machines...over 25 bulls each in WA alone. BUT, they have not kept there marriage/families together and I would blame a lot of it on their inability to properly controll their obsession of hunting. I will choose my wife and kids over a bunch of bone on the wall every time.

Its a balancing act but if priorities arent right then no one wins.

If you can do it in WA my hats off to you, but if you live in MT,ID,WY,UT,CO,NM and oregon its acheivable, elk pops in some of those states is insane, the liberal seasons and tons of public land

Down in New Zealand there is no limit, so some guys who live on the West Coast down there will shoot an Elk (or Wapiti as the kiwis refer to them)/red deer hybrid damn near every week.  I think the elk are originally Washington stock, so I guess that kind of counts...

I know a couple old boys back home in Montana that gotta be approaching 60 elk to their credit.  Hell, one old boy that been dead for ten or more years was probably over a hundred I'd bet.  None of these guys are trophy hunters, kill the big bulls when they see'em, kill the cows when they see'em as well.  My family has always done pretty well, but just meat hunters.

I know a guy in North Idaho who killed 13 330+ bulls in 15 years.  He also killed two 190"+ mule deer in that time (public land).  I killed 4 bulls in 6 total days of elk hunting with my bow in WA if that counts?   :chuckle:

My dad told me that he helped my grandpa pack out his 50th bull.  I know 2 of them scored over 300.  Dad also said that all but 5 or 6 were killed in Washington.  The funny thing is my grandpa was in his 40's when he killed #50.  Moved to alaska the next year, never killed another bull and died two years later.

How about one of our old professors.  Seems to me he killed so many he decided to use a spear.  I remember him shooting one with a rubber arrow once too if I remeber right.

I'm on the other end of that spectrum.  Been in bow range of several nice bulls, always in a spike and cow only unit.  I can whack and stack whitetails and bears, but for me elk are shape shifters or reside in another dimension.

Not It - But I know of a few.  One in Washington is typically good for a bull every other year.  A few relatives that are in the high 20's low 30's using multiple states to do it.

One friend in Idaho typically gets 2 per year in Idaho, both as a non-resident and 1 every other year in Montana.  He hunts very dense timber and typically shooting inside 50 yards.  He has been hunting the same area for a very long time, and his success is atributed to knowing the area extremely well, and what the animals do and spend their time.

I have known him about 8 years, and he is hardcore.  No kids, but is married, and hunts 35-42 days for deer and elk.

Myself - spike and a cow.  Been close several times, but no shots.

I've got a great uncle in MT that had a 40x60 loft in his barn full of 5 and 6 point racks.  There must have been near 75 or 80 at one time.  There are some whoppers in the bunch, but he says he never packed out the biggest racks.  He's fed more people in his 89 years than United Way ever will.

Myself.....well, I'll never make it to legendary status, but I don't want to, either.  I've hunted 23 years and probably taken 20-25 elk; I'd have to count the box of teeth to find out.  Some with each kind of hunting: rifle, muzzleloader, and bow; some were cows, some were 6 points.  I'm still waiting for the Booner with a bow, though.  Come on archery Blues tag!

I can say I've had fun along the way, and I'm still married after 12 years!

This thread is worthless without some pics.  If half the above stories are true, then there are some guys who have got this elk thing figured out, I know I don't.

But i am gettin addicted to this site; lol, i will post my elk killin pics soon!! All westside public land, do it yourself!!!   :chuckle:

Elk hunting is more than a sport it is a passion, their is nothing better than calling in a bull elk.. It raddles your bones when you got a screamer in close.. It will change your life!!! I called 2 bulls in a 10 yrds for my 2 bestfriends this past season and the look on their faces was priceless.. We captured them on vidoe as well, so that was priceless for my 2 buddies first bulls....  :)

2% is being in the right place.
2% is being there at the right time.
96% is combining the above 2.

I know one guy, but he's no longer married.  Not sure if elk hunting was the cause.

Wow... some good ones on the site and some more amazing tales too...

Yeah Doug... Tom had it figured out....

I agree...the few guys I know and the few who posted here that do it in Washington...especially if the bulls are mature bulls... REALLY have my respect. I know a couple brothers that do it... one of them will kill a 270-330 bull every single year... unreal... and I'm talking for the last 20+ years...

As for Montana..Idaho, Wyoming, etc..... being easy... well... I am a self confessed retard when it comes to killing critters... The seasons are long over here and the country is fantastic... but its still not easy. heck...even ask Bone Addict....

My hunting partner and I started hunting elk in 94 I think.  Only modern firearm never hunted with a bow for elk.  Between us we have killed 12 bulls in Wa.  Never tried for cows .  Hunted MT a few times over the years and were only skunked because we let small bulls go.  Killed 8 in Mt.  Had four different times where we did the count down, and dropped two bulls at the same time.  We have done ok, but still have not killed a 320+ to stick on the wall.  Gotta love Wa spike only and our crazy modern firearm season for elk.

I'v only been hunting elk for about 16 years, so to some of you I am still a youngster. I have only ate one elk tag in that time. I have never killed a monster bull. The guys who consistantly kill 320+ bulls amaze me. Just to shoot elk is just a matter of hard work and effort. I have been married 15 years, sometimes it's questionable if we will make it to the next hunting season :chuckle: :chuckle:. Give in all year except during elk season, then collect on your time.

I agree 257.  I probably could have been slated for an elk killing machine, but then I discovered moose.  That knocked me out of the elk hunting for about 5 years.  Got back into it last year though.  Man that was fun. I Missed it.
