Went out today to try and catch some Walleye and try out my buddies' new ( to him ) boat . He bought it last fall and has never owned a boat , I have . I was giving him the run down on things to look for and things to do, etc . Was running on the big motor and explained, " Make sure you see water peeing out of both motors every time you start them."
All was going well , so I said, "Let's fire up the kicker 2015 Yamaha 9.9 and check it ." I was running it and knew I saw water peeing out . Awile later, kicker shut off . I fired it back up and noticed instantly it wasn't peeing . Pulled the cover, and it was warming. Motored over to the dock and started pulling hoses and blowing in them when air went through what I could reach in the water I decided to pull the boat so I can check out the screen on the bottom etc on land . Pulled the screens and found chunks of dried, weathered rubber behind the screens and in the hole that goes up to the head . Pulled all that out and blew through the fresh water flush connection . Heard and felt air coming out where the screens are . Dipped the boat in the water , started it , no peeing , came home . On to the question is there some rubber gasket down in that area around the screens ? How hard is it to get inside the lower unit ? Any other ideas ?

The impeller is made out of rubber. Maybe it’s shredded and you need a new one. I’d pull the lower unit and check.
That would be my guess. Pretty easy to pull the lower unit and check it out.

How hard is it to get inside the lower unit ?
Remove 4 bolts and pull it off. That easy. Try YouTube for how-to

Yep sounds like impeller, I’ve had the same thing happen, seen rubber pieces behind the screen.

Once I did have to put a new impeller in. Easy fix on a small outboard. Well, it did take me two times to get it installed correctly. :bash:

I now keep a paper clip in the boat. About every other year the pee hole gets clogged with a spider or something. I straighten out the clip and poke the hole while running and boom there it is. Sometimes there's a weak stream. Same fix every time.
Once I did have to put a new impeller in. Easy fix on a small outboard. Well, it did take me two times to get it installed correctly. :bash:

Same, have to check every year for bugs that crawl in and plug up the hole.

Cheap and easy, replace it before it’s a problem. Annual or bi annual maintenance

Its surprising how quick an impeller can go bad (especially if ran out of water)

Yeah, aluminum oxidation and salt. That motor looks to have been ridden hard and put away wet. My guess is it’s been unused for a long period of time.Boat and motors are 2014 with 242 hrs . Buddy picked it up in November of last year . Previous owner used it a couple months prior for fall salmon ? :dunno:

You can use some of the commercial solutions to dissolve salt, but once it's built up its pretty hard to get off, especially in areas you can't reach.
