Title: Black Berry Time
Post by: Bullkllr on July 10, 2023, 11:10:56 AM
Starting to see pickable numbers of ripening berries. Not the peak yet, but time is here. Looks like decent numbers this year. Pie tonight!

Where at? I’m pretty low on the wet side and am still seeing blossoms on all the patches around me.

Finally saw a bunch of green berries about 1/3 size yesterday on my ruck.

My kiddo was in heaven when we went out. He’s a lucky charm too, 1 cougar, 1 coyote, 4 bears, 20 dear and a whole bunch of blackberries on our last two scouting missions together.

Lucky for you, you have a guy that will host you and feed you and allow you to pick as many berries as you want.  Just means miles.

I checked a few spots today and they are all still green.

And someone mowed my favorite spot.   :(

Wait until you see how much cheap stolen property is available on Craigslist over here, there’s plenty of silver linings!

Yes they are ripe. Two blackberry pies fresh out of the oven.

We started picking the little trailing blackberries about June 20. We had picked 8 gallons by last weekend. Found a couple good slash piles. Enough for this year. Lots of pies and jam

Bump for the start of blackberry time. We got a fairly good haul yesterday. Pie tonight! Lots of green/red ones getting zapped by the hot dry conditions.

I just checked and, no berries here.  Not even green ones, just blooms.  At least another week.

Haven't ventured out to my other areas yet.

We're referring to the native trailing variety, which are smaller but have unsurpassed flavor. These would be the only ones ripening now. Feral/Himalayan variety ripen more Augustish.

Decent video describing the differences between the two main varieties of blackberries.

Not sure of the variety, but we have the super tiny blackberries that grow directly on the ground. About 1/3 of ours are ripe now. The others are still red. So delicious, but hours of picking for 1-2 pies.

We were driving by a cutbank in the Sequim Area, govt land, maybe 30' tall and 200 yds long, my wife said, "Is that ALL blackberries?!?!" I said, "Yup!"

Cut the sugar from the (reduced sugar) pectin box recipe to slightly over half, and it makes amazing jam! Just boil it down, no labor needed! (Full sugar pectin won't jell if you reduce the sugar.)

I use Honey instead of sugar and it's awesome.

Come get some plants, I spent four hours spraying the dam things this morning and I’m still not done.🤬

But we did put in some thornless ones in this spring.🤣

Hopefully it doesn't end up like last year. Plants got a great start, than shriveled on the vine with the heat and lack of rain.

This is all that's left of pie #1. Still have enough berries for one or two more. Such intense flavor from those berries. This one actually had about 1/3 'black cap' raspberries.

I need to remember to cook longer than what a lot of recipes call for to make sure the thickener sets up.
