Title: I got a DAM question
Post by: cohoho on June 05, 2009, 04:54:03 PM
Ok, those that hang around Bonneville and the gorge area, if you got wind scheduled for 5 to 10mph in the morning becomin g 10-15 in afternoon.  What is the effects inside that area.  Haven't been there enough to know, each time I was it was dead calm, but have stories of wicked wind through there.

It can get nasty at times, 5-10 not a biggy.   It depends on the direction of the winds through the canyon weather or not they'll give you a problem.  Up river wind sucks, but a wind from the east isn't a big deal.

Bonneville Pool isn't bad at 10-15. Upriver near but west of  Bingen  the  section is called Swell City. For good reason. I have seen surf hitting the beach at the old Broughton Mill at 4' plus,HEAVY west wind. Have seen numerous winters when the push boats and barges are getting spray the length of the barges to wash onto the push boats. Its when it gets 20+ that is exciting. Used to own a sloop and no sailmakers this way will make storm sails for the Gorge that I have found. Downstream of Bonneville dam isn't as bad as the pools. good luck.
