I was out for an evening hunt and had been sitting on a log watching a somewhat open area in the timber. I'd been sitting for about 30-40 minutes and a few times I scraped a stick up and down a small tree that was right next to me doing my best to sound like a buck rubbing a tree. When I decided to move on I stood and turned around and there was a cougar staring at me from 25-30 yards. As soon as I swung my gun up he took off. Can't help but wonder how long he had been watching me. Do you think he was curious about the noise I was making or did he just wander by and see me?

I would bet your scraping is what got him to come take a look.

:yeah:

Jeez that was easy :chuckle:

Sucks you didn't get a shot off.
Very cool to see one though.

If he was that close watching you what was going through it's mind? Would it have attacked you or figured out you were human and left??? How many hunters are in this situation and don't even know it.

Me exact thoughts too.

Bet he followed you to where you sat down.

Not knowing they are there happens more then most people realize.
My grandson is afraid to try cougar hunting after reading post like this.

Exactly. After talking with some cougar guys I know in Montana(wife’s cousins) they will tell you, “for every cat you’ve seen out hunting, there’s probably a handful you’ve never seen but they saw you”. I know I’ve been in “catty” areas in the Methow, bones, kills cached, the smell of a pi$$y litter box etc. and have had the feeling something was watching me. I’ve had that same feeling in areas where there is no cougar sign, the hair on the back of my neck is standing at attention. Not a good feeling. I would bet the farm there’s a heck of a lot more cats in this state than they’re telling us, A HE!! of a lot more!!!! 3000 statewide is a joke!

I've always heard that for every one you see, a hundred have seen you.
I usually sit against a tree and check behind me somewhat frequently. Prefer to predator hunt with a buddy though and we'll sit a couple trees apart at angles where we can see behind each other.
