I'm looking for something like a bluing tank, about 6x6x32". I need it to boil barrels to aid in removing rust prior to carding them. My other option is a SS bar speed rail, amazon has them for $35.

Will PVC stand up to the chemical that you're using? I've made arrow dip tanks by cutting PVC and putting caps on the ends then cutting a thin section down the length. FWIW, I just did a rusted up barrel last summer with Krud Kutter and left it in for a couple hours with no leaks.

Maybe a piece of gutter with a little reinforcement?

I found a rifle in the hills a couple year's ago. The stock and leather were toast and it obviously had been there for a while. The barrel and the action had a bunch of surface rust. I figured, I had nothing to lose so I disassembled, soaked the barrel and the action in Krud Kutter in a PVC tube with one regular cap and one screw in cap. After a couple of soakings, I scotch brited and steel wooled any place that had pitting left. I sent it to my gunsmith in Maryland where he measured everything and made sure the bore and the chamber were in good shape. After that he used a polishing wheel on the entire thing and it looks like it's new. At least for the chemical I was using, the PVC worked great. Good luck!

Does it really need to boil?

Yes, I need to boil. The process I'm going to use, boil for 45 minutes then brush it with a carding wheel. Then replete as necessary, that way the old bluing will remain intact. Then do a rust blue for any bare metal. This is going to be my first attempt at this, I'm trying to restore a Savage/Fox SXS. It was put away in a soft case very wet both the barrels and stock need work. The process is what Mark Novak uses in his videos, see the Anvil YouTube.

Gotcha. Well I think you'll need a couple crab cookers, and a tray. That speed tray will work with aluminum foil as a cover. A bluing tank would cost a bit more.
