I took possession of a Kanati Tek PX-1 e-caller this week, and now am itching to get into making my own sequences. Call it the hope of Audacity.
I like the idea of launching a full sequence and letting it run, thus avoiding unnecessary movement to change things up on the sounds while a critter may be approaching, or to insert silent intervals (though a simple MUTE button push covers that pretty well).
I am thinking that a useful strategy might be to have a separate sequence ready to invoke when a coyote is in view, and perhaps as close as 200 yards. What might such a sequence sound like? I was thinking lower volume, perhaps mouse squeaks.
Is there any advice out there to be given, that might guide me to useful sequences? I hear that some are making some with nearly continuous sound, not leaving those 2 minute gaps between "sequences".
Might I be best served to not include coyote vocalizations, or if I did, which ones make sense?
I would also welcome any complete sequences folks would like to share (I have Varmint Al's). I propose to share mine, if they produce any results (or not).
Here is a peek at the Kanati Tek caller:

and the remote controller:

The labeling of the controller gives some hint of the capabilities. More on that in another post.

I have had good luck with this one. I made it for bobcats but I have called in coyotes with it. It starts with 2 mins of silence but then does a range of mouse squeaks, woodpecker, rabbit and repeats. Not much silence between sounds and at the very end there is bobcat in distress. 23 mins.

how does random animal distress noises bring in an animal. It seams like they would catch on. I could see a predator thinking about going after one juice rabit witha broken leg but if every animal in that direction sounds like it just got hit by a car how do they not get a little freaked out by that?

I guess I, too, am scratching my head at the 'logic' of throwing in a mix of sounds. On the other hand, Randy Anderson (praise his name :chuckle:) suggests changing up a call if they aren't coming in. So perhaps a change in and of itself doesn't turn off a coyote. And hey, ol' Kain is reporting success with it!

Animals dont think like humans. Cats get bored easily so changing the sounds gets and keeps them interested. I really dont think a cat or coyote is thinking "hey there is a rabbit over there...wait now its a mouse whats the big idea?" They just hear an animal in distress and think "food better get it before someone else". :twocents: I dont think their "logic" meter is very high. I have actually seen a coyote sitting watching as the woodpecker sounds was going and as soon as it turned to the high pitched rabbit it came running in. As soon as it saw my Mojo Critter it took off like a rocket. :dunno:

I will second Kain's post and add that you never know what will trigger a response from a predator.
As for sounds I would suggest creating some that start with crows or jays that lead into rabbit or fawn distress. After a minute or so you could add a coyote vocal and maybe a hurt pup before going back to the distress. You could take just those options and make a few different sequences. You could also mix some small bird or woodpecker distress with some rodents/squeaks for coaxing.
Good luck and keep us posted.

:)another gimic, sequences, pushing a button on a remote in my hand is virtually no movement. and I can pick any sound I want at a seconds notice. ppppppfftttwwwwwwaaaappppppphhh! I aint doin it.
so there
Carl LOL :)

Thats what I did at first. But then I found I was pretty much pushing the same buttons in the same order anyways. I still hold my MP3 player in my hand so I can change the sound, adjust the volume or turn it off if I feel the need. Sequences are very helpful to guys that dont have a remote of some kind also.

:)Heck I am just pickin trouble!! LOL I use what I put on P1,2,3,4 or mostly my secret weapon and add mouth calls.
just setting up a sequence any sequence just would not work for me, I think ajustablity is the key.
