Title: new load
Post by: littlebuf on June 13, 2009, 02:43:58 PM
i don't usually go looking for loads from guys i just work them up myself, and still will what i need is a good suggestion for powder in a 300 win mag 200gr nosler ballistic tip or similar bullet. i have a great load for 168gr ttsx out of this riffle with reloader 22 and am still working with that powder on a couple loads. the reason im asking about other powders is there so darn hard to get if one of you has had luck with a powder and a 200 gr bullet ill go jump through the hoops to get that powder and start working on a load. thanks guys

I would try Hodgdon H1000.

Reloader 17 or 19 or 22
Ramshot Magnum or Hunter
Magpro - may be a bit hot for standard 300 WM

Most of the powder companies offer reloading data PDF style on their websites.
I know Ramshot, and Alliant does, as well as Hodgon/Winchester/IMR

I would reccomend Retumbo for the 200 grain bullet weight in a 300 winny.  That powder gets better velocity with the larger bullets and has proven to be very accurate in my rifles.  The RL 19 and H1000 are too fast for the bigger bullets in my opinion.

Start out by going on Hodgdon's website.  One think I learned with Hodgon reloading data,  MAX LOAD is MAX LOAD. Work your way up to it.

What length barrel?  I'm a big fan of H1000, and, R22 as well.

tikka hunter, im pretty sure its a 24 inch barrel (jeez i cant believe ive forgotten) ive had good luck with re loader 22 in other wieghts out of this riffle and i have 5 different test loads im still going to try the first five i wast happy with. if i don't find one i may look into the retumbo, sounds like its a slow burner. if its slower that rl22 it may do the trick

H4831SC and a 180 grn Accubond. I can't remember the amount of powder but they like it hot. but as you know start low and work it up. H4831SC is a great powder in allot of guns. I keap several cans as I use it in 4 of my rifles. the .270 is one that also shoots it well.

It also does well in extreme temps.

With a 24" tube you are wasting time trying a 200 grn bullet. you don't have enough to really push it. I would think about 165-180 grn. I have really liked the accubonds in all my guns.

do you think its a waste of time with a 200gr bullet? i was having pretty good results at 100 yards but a 200 it all went to hell. i have a great load with a 168gr ttsx that im more than confident with at 400 yards. i was trying to expand my possibility's with the one riffle by having a good load at 200grs even if i never use it.

I would go ahead and try the 200 grain. I don't think it's a waste of time at all. You should be able to get very respectable velocities and there will be no significant difference in trajectory between the 200 grain and a 180 grain. The 200 grain in 30 caliber is good in that it has a very high ballistic coefficient. That will help it to buck the wind better than a lighter bullet.

It's just my opinion but a 200 grn bullet needs a long tube. like a 28"

They might shoot good but looking at the speed of a big bullet with no barrel to get it going. I would stick with the lighter ones 180 and under. Trust me they will kill just fine. Try them if you want to just to see how good of a group you can make. but for hunting I would think 2x.

I shoot the 200 grn accubonds out of my custom 30-newton and they shoot reel good. last group was 5 shots at 100 yrds. my thumbnail will cover them up. I use H4831sc in it with a 28" tube. The impact points are the same with the 180 grn out to atleast 700 yrds. I like heavy bullets!!!!

You're right in that a 180 grain would probably do just as well as a 200 but it's fun to experiment, and I guarantee you will not be putting yourself at a disadvantage by using a 200 grain bullet out of your 300 magnum.

I don't think the 300 Winny has enough powder to push that 200 grainer fast enough to benefit the 500 yard and closer shooter.  I would stick with quicker 180 grain or even the 165 grain for those distances.  It will be quicker to the target with less time in the wind.  I could be completely wrong though.  Keep us up to date on the results.  As you can see a post above I am looking for pet loads with the 165 grain accubonds.  I have plenty of 180's layin around for the big 30's.

One other note. I ran into this with my wifes 300wsm. the longer bullet will need to be pushed into the case allot to clear the magazine. you will lose alot of case capacity and not be able to get much of the go dirt in it. it was really slow in her gun.

On my custom gun I had it biult to shoot the longer 200 grn bullets so the bullet can hang way out.

If you had a 26" or longer barrel it would be a different story. the short barrel will hold you back with the heavy bullet.

But his is not a WSM. It's a 300 Win. Mag. I find it hard to believe that it won't have enough powder capacity to get a 200 grain bullet moving at a reasonable velocity.

You live near me!!  I tell you what. I will give you 5 of my 200 grn bullets if you want just to play with them. load them up and try. It would be very intresting to see what they do.

I live near the race track.

my thoughts are that powder capacity in a non issue when dealing with a short barrel. it won't burn it all anyway. I'm no expert and would like to see if i'm right or not.

You will lose case capacity when you have to push it way back in to fit the magazine or not crowd the landings.

I'm about 1 1/2 miles from there. Problem is I don't have a 300 mag. I hope I didn't imply that I did. But my brother does and I used to load for him before he got his own equipment. I would be curious to see how fast a 200 grain bullet could be pushed. I know my brother plans on trying them sometime. He wants to use 200 grain Accubonds on antelope.

Nosler book has them at 2970fps
Hogdon data has it going 2962fps

You might see 3000 fps if you're lucky in a 24" barrel.

You will have a little more recoil with a full case and a larger bullet.

For the 180's

Hogdon has it at 3042 fps (not much more than the 200's)  Probably not enough to equal out the higher bc.

I would look at the 165's and 168's a little harder. Especially on antelope.

im gunna keep playing with the 200 grain bullet for a while. like i said ive got a great load in 168 that i will hunt anything im going after this year with. the trouble any more with experimenting with loads is trying to get different components, that's why i was asking for good powders you guys may have found for the heavier bullet because its not like the good ole days when you could hit the store and have your pick. good info guys keep it coming

Littlebuf,

If you want I will mail some bullets to you. Shoot them and see what they do. I would like to see how they shoot. I know my gun likes them. If you live close enough we could meet and I will give them to you and some H4831sc to try as well.

all I shoot out of my 300 win mag is 180grn Silver tips and using the data from Nosler  imr4350 and 70 grains powder, I have been happy with the results.

you have to be accompanied by a member and it costs like 7-10 bucks.  I think.
