Title: Texas Whitetails
Post by: Jimmy33 on March 25, 2024, 01:17:38 PM
Long time mountain whitetail hunter from the northwest wanting some general info. It looks like there may be a possible move to Texas coming up. Probably the Fort Worth area but could also end up in Houston. What does everyone do for hunting? How much is a lease on average? Does everyone end up hunting neighboring states? The public land in Texas? Just want to know what I am getting myself into. I will still probably come back to Idaho for the rut to hunt but, in general, my western hunting will come to a slow crawl. Dont need specifics at all...just want to ge a feel for what eveyone does down there. I know when I lived there I was in the military and I was only there for a year and had no extra money.

Very very little public land in Texas. I was but a wee private when I was there 30 years ago so I knew I didn't have enough money to even look for a lease.

Have a buddy who moved that way a few years ago. 0 public land to hunt on unless your drawn according to him. Looking up hunt clubs it can be 1500 and up annually. Colorado is close to Texas. OTC elk and draw a 1 point unit every year. No need to hunt to brush rats of Texas  :chuckle:

I took a promotion down to Lubbock, Texas and lived there for 14 months up until last summer. Born and raised in WA, hunt WA/ID/MT. I could not wait to get out of there. Thankfully I got another promotion up to Montana where we wanted to end up. There is close to zero public land and it’s a big hassle to go hunt other states once a year. It felt claustrophobic knowing I couldn’t just drive and hike for miles or go camp. But idk what you are into. I was just down in Fort Worth last week for work. Nice weather but gets really hot. I would think it over but you couldn’t pay me enough to move back.
