Title: Lowest power 22 round?
Post by: Night goat on March 26, 2024, 07:38:04 PM
I got a brown squirrel that's been wreaking havock on my cabin. I removed 3 nests and 3 black garbage bags of shredded insulation yesterday. He's gotta go. Somebody near by had been feeding him too cuz in all that insulation there were all sorts of cocktail nuts, dried fruit, feed grade corn cobs etc.... now I have a larger rodent problem up there....

I got an old break action single shot 22 I'm gonna most likely get some shot shells for, doubt it has any rifling left cuz it's 100+ years old but still shoots just fine (meaning safely goes bang)

But i was wondering, what's the weakest 22 round on the market? This squirrel is used to being fed so you can get 10 feet away or so...

I mean a box of shells is what? 15$?

Pellet gun is 60-200$?

Could try live trapping but either way this guys gotta go before it eats some wires

CCI Quiets move at something like 700 fps and are slow enough I can see the bullet before it hits paper at 50 yards.

I use Agulia 22LR Colibri. You only hear the hammer drop.

I use CB Longs through my bolt action .22 and they are around 710 fps.  Very quite and work very effectively.

If you can get 10 feet from him use a blow gun! Nobody will ever know!

I used to use CB caps for dispatching trapped animals. They also made BB caps. Not sure if you can get them anymore. I think they were around 700 ft per second.

I've got more than a half dozen different kinds of sub .22 ammo. The lowest I have is 420fps I believe. I kill grouse with them, so a squirrel should be no issue.

As mentioned, CCI CB Longs are very quiet.  Agulia 22LR Colibri are stupid quiet--literally about as loud as dry firing your gun.  22 shorts are also very quiet.

The CB's and the "Quiet" sound about the same to me and I can't say that I notice one being any louder than the other and that's shooting them bare gun or with a suppressor.  In my 22 semi auto pistols, unsuppressed, either of those two are slightly louder then a pellet gun and with a can they're quieter then a pellet gun.  Neither will cycle the action though.  In a 22 rifle the CB's and Quiet ammo is just crazy quiet.

If either the CB or "Quiet" 22 ammo isn't quiet enough for you you may want to resort to using a blow gun.  :chuckle:

I believe these are primer only and are marked LR but more of a Long (20 gr) than a LR ......I've killed a few raccoons with them and pissed off several others......gotta hit the right spot. CCI Subsonic Shorts (name ?.....can't find box) might even be quieter.

Either will do a squoil and keep it on the down low. They'll work in that single shot or a bolt action or pump.

At my cabin there is an old Crossman pump BB gun on the back porch and it is perfect for tree rats. Quiet, deadly and ammo is always available.

The super Colibri are powder only - https://www.aguilaammo.com/products/22-super-colibri-long-rifle-subsonic-lead-bullet
under 600 fps.  Recommended for Bolt guns and revolvers.

FYI the Douglas brown squirrel is protected and I wouldn’t advertise that you are gunna kill it.

Typo on my part.  I meant Primer only...  Powder only would be difficult to ignite huh!?

I think that a Koro trap will solve your problem. Just take care of business and not advertise your intentions.

Common wood plank rat trap takes care of them no problem
Take a whole almond and lather peanut butter on it and wedge it on the trap trigger , wire it down and you will have taken care of the problem
