Title: Anyone have any information on hunting the Mill Creek Watershed in WA
Post by: HUNT on June 15, 2009, 03:42:01 PM
Just looking for some information on hunting the mill creek watershed from the washington side.  I drew a tag for this year.  Spent yesterday hiking the upper end...  Still lots of snow up there as the roads were closed with huge drifts over them.  Rained on us, but still fun....  If anyone has hunted here before and can be of any help, it would be appreciated.

Pretty steep...  Do you think antlers are smaller on one side from always rubbing on the hillside?

there's a couple threads on here re: blue mountains bull tags and there's a common theme...make sure you're in the best shape of your life...this probably holds the most truth in this unit.
you can't camp in there, scout it prior to the season or bring anyone else in there with you i think...

thats a tough frikkin hunt.

Definately about as steep as anything I have hunted before....   I plan on being in great shape before my Idaho hunt in October...  I've been hunting elk there for 15 years in central Idaho in some pretty steep country (That seems to be where the elk are.)  So I think I know what I'm in for....  Alot of work. But I've heard some very nice bulls live in there.  Scouting it from the outside is the only way you can do it (which I plan to do 5 -6 weekends before the Hunt starts October 31st.....  Plan on being able to hunt all 9 days if needed.

be sure to pick your one buddy very carefully, jackelope is right, no camping, in and out at a set time, you are allowed one helper to get one out, i suggest a friend with mules

I don't care what your hunting, but you might want to just call them up to the top of that ridge.  Maybe it's just me but I'd rather not pack anything up that sucker unless I was rewriting a record book or something  :yike:

I was hoping to find someone that has hunted this hunt before who may be able to give some pointers on hunting this area.

Do like everyone else, drive the road and hope a nice bull decides to cross and shoot him. I hated looking down in that hole  :yike: I think I would look into hunting it from the bottom side and comming in from Oregon.

I hunted the Watershed in '04, I believe. At that time there were some hunting with permission signs up on BLacksnake ridge, I believe. I will check some stuff at home to see if I have more info. You could also check the "GO Hunt" maps at the WDFW page.

We camped on the Oregen side and walked in the first few days. We were pooped by the time we reached the Washington side. There was a real nice trail that started on the BLacksnake side and you were immediately in the hunting area.

I was told the trail coming in fron the bottom was completly chocked in with deadfalls.

Thanks for the info MHWASH, any more info would be helpful.  I need to check out access from the north side of the watershed in the blacksnake area....  Your right about looking down the deep dark hole bucklucky, its intimidating....  But driving the road isnt an option.  I'm there to kill a bull so into the watershed I will go....

Truthfully , I have spent hours glasssing into that hole in september not to even see a bull. Im sure they are there, see the tracks crossing over into the Wenaha. I just havent been there at the right time I guess. The lower end looks like it would hold more munbers of elk to me, looks like good elk country! Good luck and keep us posted on what you see! Ive heard of a few good bulls comming out of there.

I heard from one of the USFS guys yesterday that the elk dont really show up in the watershed until September/October.....  Not sure if thats accurate or not...  I bet they don't winter in the watershed.  I have heard there are great bulls in there also....  I know one person who hunted in there and shot a small 6 on opening day.  He hunted from the top and ran into elk about halfway to the creek.  I will keep everyone posted.  I have my sights set on a 330 bull and am willing to do whatever it takes to get one......

Look at trying to access the ridge above Green creek or Green ridge from the north side.
Its all steep so that part is a given. I've watched bulls on that ridge while sitting on the points below table rock, but from where I was they may as well been on the moon. :o This was many years ago, but I hear the bulls still hang on the east facing side of that ridge.

If it were me I'd contact the guys that own the property on lewis peak (the peak itself)and access from there normally if your not a total *censored* they will usually let the guys with the watershed tags access there if not you can camp at the end of biscuit ridge I'd work my way down into the shed from green peak guys pull some nice bulls out of there every year I think 330 is an attainable goal good luck with your hunt

Have a friend that drew the tag last year.  He saw bulls everyday, the biggest problem he had was getting within range for a shot, like under 500yds. The elk would go into a draw with not a lot of cover then just vanish and he couldn't find them again.  He ended up running into another guy with a tag and hunted with him for a couple of days.  That guy shot a nice 6pt bull that he jumped at close range when going down a draw.  They took that bull out the bottom with horses.

He got burnt out and never hunted the last couple of days of the hunt.  After talking with him about the hunt I would suggest getting in the best shape of your life and find a friend to camp out with you that is also a good packer and motivator.

You  get 14 days i am pretty sure.. oops I just looked you only get nine, My bad.
I hope you have a real good friend cause you can only bring one person with you to pack it out and that is the only the he can be in there.

I have a friend with horses who said he would come help me pack out.  I'm gonna hold him to it.  I know one other guy who drew the tag this year along with one of his friends.

Is the road up biscuit ridge public or private?

How about blacksnake ridge road?

If you've never done it before I would get on the Walla Walla County taxsifter and start finding landowners who border the shed closest to where you want to hunt, I honestly think a majority of them would let you camp if all you wanted was to access the shed and not hunt their land, at the end of the road where biscuit and black snake meet you will usually find a big camp of guys hunting the shed.  These 2 roads get down right nasty in the summer months, ruts with deep powder, it can be pretty hard on your rig.  There's a guy who works for the state that walks the intake trail daily during the season he might be someone I'd get ahold of to pick his brain.

Thats a great idea.  I'll do that after I figure out where I plan to focus my time.  Thanks again.  The insight has been great.

We were there on the oregon side looking over to the Washington in mid april and saw 75 head of elk in scattered herds on the open slopes mostly on the Washington side of the Shed. They were just starting to grow their horns but we saw several bulls. The washington side looks more huntable than the Oregon side as far as visibility but it will take a lot of effort to pull a good bull.
Title: Re: Anyone have any information on hunting the Mill Creek Watershed in WA
Post by: ipkus on June 17, 2009, 10:27:57 AM
Ok, where to start?

1.) The elk are in there in September, and they overwinter there, as well.

2.) There are lots of elk, and big bulls in the 'shed.  There are more elk on the Washington side after the first couple of days - many of the elk on the Oregon side of the line get pushed to Washington.

3.) On the opener, elk will be spread throughout the unit.  The further you get into the season, they will be more concentrated away from the pressure.  Think of the 'shed as a circle (it somewhat is); if access is only allowed daily from the perimeter of the circle, where's the furthest point from the perimeter?  Hunt there after the first couple days...that's where the majority of the elk are.

My advice...

Go in the Mill Creek Rd.- where it turns right and crosses the bridge to start climbing the mountain, stay straight and try to catch the 'caretaker' that lives in the cabin right there.  I don't know if Larry Sherry is still the person doing it, but whoever it is, they'll know more about the current state of the 'shed than anyone else; it's their job.

The trail system is not what it used to be.  They quit clearing a lot of it several years ago, and packing out, even with stock, can be a nightmare out the bottom.  Just because the map they send you shows a trail, doesn't mean it's useable anymore.  Find out BEFORE your hunt.  Again, these are questions for the person above.  You can also contact the USFS office in Walla Walla for some help.

Plan on being there at least a full day before your hunt starts to try to find a bull you really like in the spotting scope.  If you 'put him to bed' at dark, he'll be nearby at first light the next morning.  If your plan to get him doesn't work out, the hunt begins and believe me, your gameplan will be constantly changing from there on out.  Just remember #3 above as the days click away.

Be prepared for clouds/fog.  Some years the entire unit is fogged in (at least on top) the entire hunt period.  Adjust your plans...while it may be a pain to get below it, your odds of shooting a bull go up exponentially with the distance you can see.

Good luck!

Sounds like good solid advice to me....  Thanks!!!!  I'll get in touch with the caretaker and have him show me around.  I plan on being there at least a day ahead of time...  I like tucking in those elk.  I heard that from someone else about the fog....  Didn't know however that it could last 9 days...  Wow

Thanks again.....  I just want to do the tag justice!

I remember Ipkus's hunt in the shed.  Daily report for 8 days was FOG... If I remember correctly a November bugle was the undoing of the bull he killed.  I know him well and he hunted hard every day and stuck with it.  We left for Montana the day or two after he killed that bull in 04.

What a beautiful day for scouting.  Took the family out for a scouting day.  The weather was great.  Saw 6 bears, my wife and kids thought that was awesome.  Also saw some elk so that was icing on the cake.  Thanks for all the great info from you guys.

I think the fact that they had a late wet spring over there and that there is still plenty of snow up high that it is shaping up to be a great year for the Blues. Its almost JUly and things are still real wet and cool up there I hear and that should help any fire issues(fingers crossed) .nwhunter

I agree.  I would say that the cool, wet spring puts conditions pretty close to ideal.  I would say close to 70 - 80% of the cows in the herd I saw last weekend had calves, which should tell us something about the conditions.  Not sure what normal calf survival rate is, but this seemed pretty high to me.

The cougars are pretty hard on them throughout the summer.  Check that cow/calf ratio again in late Aug... it's enough to make you cry :bash:

Good luck on your hunt.  I know a few guys that have taken bulls out of the shed.  330 is a reasonable goal.  All the guys I know hunted with horses though.  Camped at the edge, rode in the dark, picketed and started hunting.  Rode out in the dark.

I haven't received my information packet in the mail yet, so I'm not for sure about the rules.  I wasn't aware that you could take a horse in except to pack out.

I plan on going in and coming out in the dark.....  We do that alot where I hunt in Idaho....  Usually your too late if you start at daylight.

No scouting for me this weekend....  My oldest is playing in the hoopfest tournament in Spokane...  Then the 4th of July wknd...  So it will be a couple weeks.

You used to be able to take a horse in there, (unless they've changed the rules).  I stopped putting in for the unit when I started hunting archery in 2004.
Actually, I just came from there.  I was scouting an area to do mountaineering training this July with my unit (not in the Watershed, obviously).  Didn't actually see anything in the 'shed, but saw 5 cows and 2 calves in a drainage on the other side of the road.  Nice day to be in the mountains...

It's pretty typical for those bulls down there to have a cheater coming out at the base of the 4th tine on at least one side.  Definitely a local genetic trait for those elk.  Glad to see you got into some elk!

Thats a decent bull there although I've seen bigger on previous trips...  Saw him first thing shortly after daylight..  About 5:15 and the sun wasn't out yet and I was getting the spotting scope set up to have a good look and snapped a couple pics...  I was hoping the pictures would have turned out better...  The 30 seconds or so I saw him in the spotting scope I would guess he was 330-340 bull....  What do ya guys think?

like I said, hard to tell from the pic.  He's definitley 320+, and if I had my goal set at 350, I would have to give him some careful consideration.  I don't think he's quite 350, but he's close enough for a second look...

Yeah, he's 7X7...  Definately gave me the here's a mature bull impression at first sight...  But I didnt have that long to look at him....  His G4's aren't real long but He has a pretty decent spread...  Didn't look like the main beam is very long until I realized he had a 7th point.... a 7x7 like this must be at least 340?  Sorry for the fuzzy pics ...  The camera couldn't gather enough light.

Black Snake Ridge is your best access to that unit, and you are hunting right away. But it's no picnic, steep and deep. The qaulity of the bulls in the shed has went downhill some waht from years past. Hope it's just a trend.

Your pics aren't from the actual shed are they? I'm assuming there from Blue creek.  No doubt there's some killer bulls in there but the days of a slam dunk monster bull just because you drew the watershed are in the past. It seems the monsters are in Blue creek , Dayton and Wenaha in recent years.  That being said 2 years ago the shed guys pulled some nice bulls out of there.   With the amount of scouting time your putting in which seems to be way more than the average Joe, I'm sure you'll have a good hunt.  If you end up on Lewis Peak stop in and say hello last cabin on the left headed up.  By the way I was up there Friday and the weather was awesome already felt like Fall.

 :yeah:
Friday was chilly.  I was up there with CoryTDF and his dad checking the trail cam.  Had a herd of elk on it and a cougar.  I'll try to get him to put the pics up when he gets back from camping.

I spent Friday night up on the 3211 trail.  Pretty foggy Saturday morning and limited the glassing.  Sure felt like fall to me.

I leave for my hunt tomorrow afternoon.  I just wanted to thank everyone that helped me out with the info.  I took 8 scouting trips down to the shed with 5 of them being overnighters.  I think I am prepared for what should be a great hunt.  I heard tonight that there is 6-8 inches of snow where I plan to camp and 12-14 on top with more snow predicted for tomorrow night.  Thanks again to those that helped a newbie to this site.

Good Luck!  This weather should make for an interesting hunt, usually it's 55 and we're hunting in long sleeve t-shirts, I'm looking forward to it the snow and cold I hope it gets the animals moving.  Hope you knock down a nice bull!

Access is going to be your biggest problem with the weather. Stuart Cabin has a trail as does Lewis Peak. Lewis Peak is owned by a private party but he may provide you access to the Watershed Trail. Biscuit Ridge is another access spot. Once you have an access point to the Shed trail try and head towards Green Peak and drop in to Watershed from Green Peak or just before the Peak. Green Peak can be a real popular area for Watershed Hunters. Plenty of snow so do not drop in to far and find a spot and glass and watch. You will see Elk. Good Luck
