Title: I did not know this
Post by: Ridgeratt on June 27, 2024, 12:52:26 PM: Took my 2013 F150 in for service. The service called and said that I had a problem with my truck. He informed me that the truck had swollen nuts. :yike:
I told him I wasn't aware of that and just how serious is this.
I did a google search and he wasn't fibbing me.

I broke almost every lug nut stud off getting the tires off.
Since then I've always put a tiny bit of grease,like the size of a pencil eraser. From the grease gun and put it in every lug nut.
And tighten till it's tight,I mean tight. I've had tire shops tell me my lugs are too tight,impact barely remove them.
I've never had a broken stud since,and they always come off eventually.

Go to Les Schwab or somewhere else and get 1 piece steel lug nuts.

I work for Ford and have sold hundreds of nuts. I don’t sell them anymore.

Make sure you have a socket in the car for the new ones though because your emergency tire kit wrench might not fit the new nuts/

if you can’t get them with an impact that is way to tight! There is a torque spec and you should stick to that. I had a tire shop rotate my tires. About a week later I was showing my son how to change out a tire for drivers Ed. The tire shop put them on so tight it cracked the paint on all of them. There is absolutely no reason to put them on that tight! You will do more harm than good!

Well, it would have been a use of $20 the nuts were so tight I sheared two of the studs on one wheel. Limped it in on two lugs, the dealer replaced the two and rotated for free.

Ya you are correct. There is a torque spec.
Tire shop told me what is was , can't remember though.
Tire shop said they where too tight,but didn't brake no studs.
It's kinda a double edge sword,cause you put grease in them,they can come loose eaieser. But they don't get rusted up or stuck.
I probably should use the torque spec.

Post by: jackelope on June 28, 2024, 11:37:28 AM: They have a chrome/tin/pot metal cosmetic "cap" that fits over the actual steel lug nut. That cap gets mangled over time taking them off and on all the time.

I will take that under advisement. All I can say if is this thing goes off someone could lose an eye.
