Title: First pike
Post by: teanawayslayer on July 08, 2024, 10:27:05 PM
Caught my first pike tonight. Used to fish this lake when I was a kid and used to slay the kokane. Needless to say these things got introduced at some point in the last 30 years and there aren’t many kokane left. Cool fish though.

Nice catch! I've never caught one. Care to share which lake?

Is it a true northern pike?  Or is it a tiger musky that was planted by WDFW in one of the few lakes they stock those into?

Tiger musky are stripped. Pike have spots. Easy to tell the difference.

Northern Pike are an aquatic invasive species, I’d report to wdfw just in case they aren’t tracking any detections in the lake you’re fishing.

Please don't get WDFW involved. A fiasco will come of it. Manage them yourself and enjoy the fishery

I’d love to hear more of your thoughts on why you think WDFW can’t manage invasive species in the state as efficiently as a singular individual? Not trying to start an argument, just a genuine curiosity.

I caught a lot of them back in NH in the Connecticut River. Used daredevils with a steel leader almost exclusively.

Pike are good eating

They are, but bony. I used to have a pickling recipe that melted the bones over a short period of time, like a couple weeks.

My thoughts. WDFW has many good biologists who know their job. Years past, most fisheries bios had sportsman and other human consumers as priority. I believe the department has since moved away from us and now benefits non consumptive users. Although destructive, pike are a great fishery to have. Salmonid recovery whereas we can utilize it as sportsman is a joke and will slowly erode to the eventual point you cannot. DFW being pulled so many directions will come in with $$$ of your money and nuke the waters ineffectively. You'll still have pike but fewer than a good fishery needs, and the kokes will forever be on a low roller coaster ride. Enjoy the pike

Easy to clean and de-bone. YouTube is your friend

Pike may be my favorite freshwater fish to eat. And possibly fish for. Makes great fish and chips.

That a $10 reward in north Stevens county! If I ever catch a good sized one I would like to try canning a little of it, the bones will dissipate too.

Was born and raised in up state NY.
Lots of good pike fishing back there although I preferred Muskie hunting my self.
And yes, wire leaders are a must.
And keep hands away from the mouth.
That was the worst part of moving out here,we used live bait to fish for them.
Had to learn how to fish all over again. :)

Pretty cool. Never fished for one though. My business partner is from Wisconsin and he is trying to get me more into Walleye, Pike and Crappie over trout and salmon

I was actually fishing for bass. And hooked into him. Yesterday I went out and bought larger swim baits to target pike and all I caught was bass and sun fish😂. Still had a good time.

Pike are right up there with walleye for taste to me.  Caught quite a few of them growing up in NE Minnesota.  Deboning is super easy.  All can say as for getting rid of them is good luck.  Seen a lake in CA get poison many times and they are still there.
