Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife
August 30, 2024

Daily coho salmon retention limit change in Marine Area 8-2
Action: Changes daily retention limit to one salmon daily.

Effective date: Sept. 3 through Sept. 24, 2024.

Species affected: Coho salmon.

Location: Marine Area 8-2, excluding the Tulalip Terminal Area and Tulalip Bay.

Salmon Rules: Salmon daily limit is 1. No minimum size. Release chum and Chinook.

Reason for action: The coho catch in August has greatly exceeded the pre-season projected catch for the entire month. Even larger catches are expected in the September marine and freshwater sport fisheries. The daily retention limit is being reduced to allow the fishery to continue without putting other fisheries or attainment of conservation objectives at risk.

No worries. It'll open up again mid-week after the last of the massive run returns. Side note, I was curious about the Salmon for Soldiers event. Will this affect that? Long way for one silver.

It will push most everybody into MA-9 and 10 and up the catch rate in those areas.

Bummer. Sounds like it's been lights out up there this week. Was going to hit it this weekend.

As long as you don't fish in 8-2 while you possess 2 fish.

It gets complicated.  You can start fishing in 8-2 and if you catch a hatchery fish you can then go to MA-9 and catch a 2nd hatchery fish.  But if you catch a wild fish in 8-2, you can't fish in MA 9.

Good to know. I believe some MAs don't allow transit with  unauthorized fish.

I need to learn how to catch fish in the Snohomish.  I usually throw everything in the box to large schools of Coho only to catch nothing, or occasionally foul hook one.

Between those experiences and having to launch and park in tweaker land, I don’t fish much in the river.

The Rotory Park launch near Lowell can be a bit sketchy with tweakers.  Never had a problem though.  The new launch in Snohomish is good and you won't have ay problems there.  Trolling plugs in the lower Snohomish or throwing spinners, plugs, bait in the upper river..

Is the new Snohomish launch prop friendly?  I've never launched there.
