Title: Does Farmer George in Port Orchard mix venison meat?
Post by: SmallGameHunter on November 27, 2024, 08:25:33 AM
Does anybody have experiences good or bad with them? Do you get your own deer back? Do they mix ground? How about steaks and roasts?

I brought in a deer and just got it back yesterday. Haven't had it yet. But I was skeptical just by the look of the place and I have no trust in them as of now. What do you all think?

P.S. I know, I should process myself. It was a roadkill salvage I was entirely unprepared for and I also have never butchered a deer before. I got a screaming deal on the meat because they lost my ticket and bill and also my salvage permit and had no idea where it was. Their filing system and really their whole operation is outdated and confused but the rave reviews online had me hoping they would do right. They were the only place around I could find to help me butcher my deer.

On the other side of the Green Monster (Narrows Bridge) I would check out Sweenies in Brownsville. On this side of the bridge Mt. View Meats.

Would recommend getting a different butcher, farmer George is the reason I got setup with all my own processing equipment years ago. But they do have a very good jerky seasoning you can buy.

Son in law took his big doe the Farmer George last year. He gave the guy who unloaded the deer from the truck and was responsible for skinning a $20 tip to ‘Keep an eye on it’. Not sure if that made any difference, but the venison turned out great. We’d go there again, YMMV.

There are much better options, ask me how I know.  Mt. View Meats in Tacoma would be my recommendation.  I have used them for several animals in the past, although now I do my own except for pepperoni.  Clean, professional and well packaged meat.

I used Farmer George once & it was ok. I brought them 2 pigs I shot in california. I had them grind all of it into various sausages except the shoulders, which I wanted whole. Well after I dropped them off I got real stick from the cancer I didn’t know I had. I was blind for a few months so my dad took me over there to pick it up on the way home from the hospital one day. I only got one shoulder back out of the 4. Partly my fault because I didn’t think of telling my dad what should be in the boxes. I just wanted to get home. I don’t know if they ground it by mistake, lost it, sold it to someone else or whatever. It was expensive, but I didn’t feel like the price was unreasonable because it was a lot of sausage.

I’ve also used Sweeney’s in Brownsville a few times. If I still lived there & hired out the butchering, they would be my go to. They do a better job, in less time for less money.  And they’re more organized.

I'm sure I will regret this, but... how do you know?

I just called them and asked if they mix animals for grinds and they assured me "No, sir, we don't mix animals here."

If they lost your road side harvest, how confident are you that you even got the same meat back? I wouldn’t be to worried about mixing, sounds like you may have gotten an upgrade if they lost it .

We stopped going to Farmer George because of cross contamination in the grind or lack of cleaning the equipment ,we suspected.
Tasted nasty

We’ve had good luck with Home meats in Shelton and as of recently, Sweeneys in Brownsville
Those would be my two to go to

The worst cured meats I've ever eaten came from that chithole.

No matter how often you kill and have meat to process just youtube it.  All animals break down in the same general manner. If you are paying for what can be done on your own in an afternoon STOP it.  Its back straps, tenderloin, steaks and a roast off hind quarters, shanks below the ankles and knees and grind the rest.  No saw needed just a good sharp knife, food plastic for the first wrap and freezer paper,

It's really easy and you know what you are getting from a butcher.  You can set your own quality control.  Hair dirt etc..  Take it into a butcher.  They are going to process what you bring in.

I have used Mt. View periodically over the past 30 years. My only complaint is costs of products like sausage or jerky. Other than this, they always do a great job.
Steve and Kathy are great people.

:yeah: We take all of our waterfowl there at the end of the season to have pepperoni made and have never had a complaint other than cost.

Just cause your great people don’t make you a good house keeper is all I’m saying. Clean work area  really reflects on end product In my opinion. Anyone can do what they want I like doing all of my own cuts , sausage , and jerky. To each is own
