Morning, got 8 points and thinking about time to start trying to draw. Question being anyone willing to share information about general area's to look at. I'm pretty self contained with either wall tent or toy hauler with quads or s/s. 69 so there are some limitations and do understand some areas are Grizzly territory so precautions are needed along with time for getting use to elevation changes. Not a big horn hunter just decent is good in my book. Draw is Jan 31 I think. Social skiils are fairly normal so
can get along with most relative to meeting new people and joing an existing group going. Appreciate any info or PM's, and to those putting in for the 25 draws "good luck"

Deer, elk, antelope?

Sorry Elk points. Thanks for catching that :o

I'd assume elk since he mentioned January application due date. You might just consider the western general tag. Might be using couple more points than you need, but there are a lot of open units that have a lot of elk.

That's a good starting point Thank you

think with 8 points I would research permit units or keep compiling points for a permit unit. You will likely waste 2-3 points on a general tag

Merry Christmas and Thank you

8 points is the low end of "No Man's Land" in Wyoming. General probably the way to go with that. I have 14 this year and keep missing by 1/2 to 1 point. Best bet is to look at the draw odds for last year and see what 7 points would get you. 7 points last year generally is the same thing as 8 points this year with point creep. Don't think that what you could draw last year with 8 you can draw this year with 8. It don't work that way.

I recommend you apply for the general tag and go enjoy elk hunting in some amazing country. 8 points “should” guarantee the tag in the regular draw. Temper your “trophy” expectations. Any public land 5 or 6 point bull is a trophy regardless of score! The alternative is to chase point creep for another 5+ years.

Any general elk areas that don’t have grizz?

A lot of areas have none and quite a few have them but very few ever seen

:yeah: Consider the Wyoming range in the west

6 points for elk, my partner has one less point, may just try for that gen west tag. I’ll have to research more on those west units, thanks.

I'm relying on my cousin who lives there. He said all i have to do is get drawn and leave the rest to "Ole Sarge". At the time he had gotten 24 elk in 27 years.
