Something we like to do when we get a bear that’s not on fish is to render down the fat. Takes a little work but feels good to use everything and makes for great gifts. Thought I’d share some pics of the one I just got. Ended up with about 35 pints on this bear.

Solid work!

Very nice work.
On another note - that looks like an outstanding setup/space you have for meat processing. We might have to get another thread going with people's setups. With a shop in my 3-5 year plans, I'm starting to compile ideas. Thanks for sharing. Cheers.

I cut meat for a lot of years in the garage on a collapsible table or in the kitchen. When I bought my new place, I turned part of the shop into a butcher shop also built a walk-in cooler. Absolutely love it and use the crap out of it.

Do you pressure can that, or does the heat differential seal the pop top?

Must have been a fatty. Nice work!

That’s excellent!
You can make soap out if that fat, right?

No need to pressure can, they seal as you said

There are a ton of uses for it, from baking to boot grease

That's a whole lotta fat! Nice work

Rendering is a heck of a lot of work. Your grease is very clean, I am impressed.

You can use it to keep your hair from falling out...

I do the same on all our bears if they have fat which most don’t. 35 pints is a really good haul. It’s the only oil I use for any cooking when we have it. I think we ended up with 67 pints last season. It was a good fall for fat.

The blushing bride uses bear lard to make soap and shampoo. It's all we use.

The cracklings are the best part! Nice haul

I was wondering about that. A friend shares his fat with me and I always wondered about the cracklins. I’m going out for bear tomorrow. Hopefully I’ll have some similar story.
