Anyone else getting excited for the opener? I will be over in the basin the first three days.
-
Never dove hunted before, but i'm gonna give it a shot this year!
-
If you're like me, you better plan on giving it a LOT of shots..... :chuckle:
-
Little and fast=bunch of ammo, not a bunch of meat. Sharpen your ID skills, I like sparrow hawks!!!

I was checking the fee schedule, and it looks like you have to have a small game license 57.00 and a migratory bird permit 20.00, so for 77.00, you could be hunting dove! That's crazy.
Or if you already have a small game license, it's only 20.00 extra dollars for dove. That's still crazy. You should be able to hunt them with just your small game license.
I suppose there is a dove enhancement program dedicated dove habit improvement, managed by a team of dove biologists, and this money is buying acres of land...
Sorry, I find myself in a picticular negative mood this morning.

Fair size DFW property near me has crops and I was told the primary reason was for doves. Not sure the truth but it sure has a bunch through autumn.
-
Good reminder to change the batteries in the decoys and clean the shotgun. Hoping for a repeat of last year and quick limits to avoid the holiday traffic otherwise I might stay an extra day.
-
I'll be hunting near Othello.
-
I've 100+ that use my property including a few dozen collards. Always wondered where they come and go. Never seem anyone huntin em either. Had spots in Tenino and Toledo that 3 of us would hit em hard and never put a dent in the numbers.

Have a decent flight line of them on the farm so should get some decent action, either way one of my favorite hunts of the year!

I'm jealous.
I grew up missing hundreds of doves in Utah...... I think i even hit one.
That is such a fun hunt.

Been hunting the opener in the Yakima Valley with my dad, uncle, cousins and various other friends and family every year for the last 40 years. Wouldn’t miss it for the world.

Any intel on the good spots near Moses Lake?

Probably won’t get any specific spots but lots of really great areas between I90 south to othello. Look for cut wheat fields/small seed weeds with water, gravel, roosting nearby and you should be in the birds. Figure out the travel corridor they use for the morning/evening and have some fun!
-
I'm going to miss it this year. 9/1 lands on a work day for me. Maybe, just maybe time to get out the last hour, but probably will just wait. Good luck to everyone!
-
Do you guys find more success in the mornings or evenings?
-
I've had great luck hunting both. Probably had more consistent success in the evening. That could be because I hunt more in the evening...Rarely hunting morning past opening day.
-
This sounds like a lot of fun. Might have to give it a shot in 2026.
-
I have most success in the evening but I tend to hunt evenings more. It is a great low intensity bonding type hunt, also great for getting kids interested in hunting. Good weather and some trigger time, not much not to like!
-
How did the opener go? Anyone melting barrels? I might hunt Wednesday evening and Thursday morning, just curious if it's worth it to endure the burning sun!
-
Opening morning was a bust for my son. He said the spot he scouted was over ran by mosquitos. He got 3 in the afternoon before football practice. He didn't get hunt the prime flight time. Cleaned his birds and was on time for practice.
-
Got a few but nothing crazy.
-
Opening morning the 3 of us almost limited, a few euros mixed in. Enough shooting to have a good time and not to hot and heavy to make it go too quick. Watched from the porch this morning and wasn’t nearly as much going on
-
I shot a limit of doves this morning. Slow steady action, not very fast paced.
