Title: I Almost Broke My Nose
Post by: oneshotkill on June 30, 2009, 06:09:31 PM
Today I was shooting my bow and after shooting for about 15 minutes, I began to come to full draw when my D loop broke!  My hand slammed into my nose and immediatly blood began to pour out.  After I got the bleeding stopped, I inspected my bow and found that my D loop had broken clean in half.  Although it hurt a lot, I more dissapointed in the fact that I will not be able to shoot my bor for a while.  The nearest bow shop is an hour from my house and I don't know that I would trust myself to try to tie my own.  I know how but do not want to risk breaking my nose or my bow.  I do not know who tied the D loop on my bow because I bought it used but it was not their fault because the actual D loop broke, not the knots.

Tying a d-loop is easy and only takes a minute if you take your time.  Trick is learning how to burn the ends.

no reason not to have a D-loop just because yours broke and you punched yourself, thats like saying you don't have a truck anymore because your to scared to run your bow over again.
I always replace mine a couple of times a year, I had one come untied at 3/4 draw after a pro shop put it on and ever since then I have tied my own, not sure if it helps or not but one of the pro shooters that comes to the club swears by waxing your D-loop when you wax your string , he claims it makes your D-loop last longer  :dunno:, so I have been doing it ever since he told me that.

1 new d-loop or more per year depending on how much you shoot  will cure that problem. the jaws of the release wear the material.

man thats funny stuff, but I have hit myself in the face with a BT release when I was learning on one, I have never had any of my d loops break and thats about 400 arrows a week on average.. thats odd.... I also wax mine, but I would keep one, you will notice that if you dont have one your arrows should hit about 6-10 inches higher with the same sight setting, that has to do with the d loop being a better nock IMO... you get consistent pressure above and below the nock point, its more true...

I'm sorry, Oneshot, but that's funny.  You put a bright spot on my day for me.  Have 2 beers and call it a night.

Worse things can happen. I kicked myself in the face the first time taking a rubber boot off my prosthetic. Hurt like hell.

Now that's a visual!  :chuckle:

Just buy a couple feet of loop material from the local pro shop and start tying your own on.  It gets to be a no-brainer after about three times, and then you can do it whenever you feel it may need it.

Now you know how it feels to get punched by yourself :chuckle: I did this last year, what sucks is I double check my bow before I shoot and the d loop looked brand new. I got about half draw with my 85lbs draw bow and whappp,I saw stars for a minute and then I was fine. I feel your pain but I even had a laugh at myself after the stars went away.

I've got to say, a few minutes after it happened, I was laughing pretty hard and I still think that it is pretty funny.

I did the same thing about 6 years ago. But I didn't get a bloody nose!!! It sure hurt like hell thou. You need to learn to tie your own. It's very simple. I use two new one's a year. One in the spring and one just before hunting season. I also inspect them for wear. I carry spare string in my backpack just in case a repair is needed in the field. Good Luck. Bucklucky how did you run over your Bow?...........lol

Don't feel bad bucklucky.  I did that one time to my shotgun.  I leaned it up where the cab meet the bed (12 guage barrel fits perfectly there) and drove off.  Got to the next spot 20 minutes away and could not find my gun.  Drove 20 minutes back and there it was.  I drug that thing for about 100 feet before it came off where at that point I ran it over.  Like Ron White said "You can't fix stupid" :chuckle:

that sucks man. another funny story my cousin and i where at walmart pickin up our fishing licences last year and he pics up this bow from the shelf and he brings it to full draw. i told him not to dry fire it so he starts to let off. once he passed that let off point instead of his hand flying forward the bow came backward. the top cam hit him in the forehead and within seconds the was blood streaming down his face. i was laughing my f'n ass off. he didnt think it was to funny. i mean if i had that on film i would be a rich man now.

Sorry you had to go through that painful experience but don't be shy about learning to tie your own; they aren't that hard to figure out.  That way you can change it as often as you like and adjust the length of them (I tie my own because I like them much smaller than most).  Also don't forget to check for wear in the future.  A quick glance before each practice session should do the trick.

Yep, I agree with all said above, but we're laughing with you, not at you. :chuckle:  Anyone who has shot a release for very long has done it at least once, sometimes more, so we feel your pain.  Just tie your own and follow the directions on the website that's posted above.
